What percentage of the music you listen to is The Dead? by sparkster185in gratefuldead

What percentage of the music you listen to is The Dead?

Your question is ambiguous: <grin> Recorded, or live?

Where I live, we get to hear Phil & Friends rambling almost every day live! For instance, I got tickets for tomorrow with Phil Lesh, John Kadlecik etc.. .

Road cycling veterans, how do you avoid tragedy with so many bad drivers out there? Please share your tips and experiences. by thesupermutantin bicycling

It is a matter of relative risks, and personal choice. Some people even choose to wear a helmet when driving a car, and it quite likely improves their chances of surviving an automobile accident.
What fraction of the 618 deaths would have been mitigated by helmet use? Half? Anyway you cut it, a death rate of 1 in 500,000 or 1 in 1,000,000 is pretty low, so lets worry about something else more likely. (Like heart disease made worse by a sedentary lifestyle, avoidable if you bicycle.)

I bet you could ladle out 45 pounds of the lead, and just pick up the pot and pour out the last 5 pounds.

The reason I don't wear a helmet is that I have looked at the data and I have seen no data that shows wearing a helmet reduces my chances of mortality.

riding a bicycle is far more risky

I also question some of your assumed statistics. Measured per hour, bicycling in the USA has a lower death rate than motoring. Sure there is still a risk, but it is pretty small. The benefits of bicycling far outweigh the risks. Repeating a myth that bicycling is dangerous needlessly scares people away from doing a healthy activity.

Since I started bicycling, I am more physically fit and weigh 50 lbs less than when I didn't bicycle. My chances of a long life probably have increased, and I usually don't wear a helmet.

Regarding Copenhagen, their infrastructure matters, but I think more importantly they have lots of practice being safe bicyclists. (And, some bicycle accidents must happen there too, but they don't fear monger about it.)

I checked your link to helmets.org and didn't find it making a case that wearing helmets reduces mortality rates. Zillions of people in Copenhagen bicycle constantly without helmets, and seem plenty safe. Here is a contrary view, why fear cycling?

Wow, the down votes surprise me. Helmets play into the myth that cycling is inordinately dangerous, and actually discourage people from taking up the healthy activity of bicycling. (Read the research, helmets only really make sense for judgement impaired child and teenage cyclists.) Everyone else would be best suited to just take a vehicular bicycling safety lesson and get on with a fear free life.

You also make a good point: Political action will be necessary to bring some equality to the issue of fair spending on road infrastructure to include spending on transit/pedestrian/bicycle issues.

Upvoted. 99.9999% of drivers, (even the hostile ones), don't actually want to hit you. The collisions happen when they don't see you. Behave like traffic, out in the middle of your lane, where drivers are looking and where they have the greatest chance of seeing you.

That said, when you are impeding other traffic, and only when it is safe, pull over to let people pass.

I always give cyclist enough room when driving... if a cyclist slapped that on my car I would go ape shit....

You seem confused. Your 'second chart' confirms that rate of growth of federal spending has slowed under Obama, it has actually slowed to be less than the rate of inflation. It is a plain fact that the rate of growth under Obama is the lowest since Eisenhower.

Just my grandpa not giving a shit about racism in 1951 (white guy in the middle). by HouseOfKrazeesin pics

[–]SaltyBoatr 6 points7 points ago

I am guessing you were not alive in the 1950's. I was, and something that is easy to misunderstand is the social effect of segregation. I grew up not knowing even a single black person. Racism was a very natural feeling when one has never known any black people in that environment. Only many years later when I got to know and become friends with black people can I say that I have gotten past racism.

Agreed. Some people, typically those who are unaware, will fear and loath people who are different. The best way to win them over is to reach out and humanize the relationship, closing the divide. It is much harder to hate someone you know. Hanging the flag seem passive aggressive. Inviting the neighbors over for dinner might work better towards bridging the gap.

I speak from experience. When I was young I was unaware that I knew anyone who was gay. (And it was easy to join in with the homophobic social pressures.) Later, when I realized I had plenty of gay relatives and gay neighbors (who now are friends), and that I actually liked (and in some cases, loved) these people; then it became impossible to dehumanize them.

It depends on your personality. I used to live near Daly City, and found that it was very easy to just sit on the couch and not finding the energy to get out and drive the 15 minutes into the City. Now that I live in the Mission, I find that just stepping outside and walking or bicycling to do interesting things is easy and natural. I VASTLY prefer living in the city to the 'burbs.

GOP actually only recently lost the latino vote (latinos supported Bush over Kerry I think)

Interesting point, I don't know either. This Googled look back shows one poll giving 61% Latino support favoring Kerry against Bush in 2004. I think you are remembering back when George Bush was governor of Texas, and he did have Latino support then. That was lost when he started pandering to the national GOP. I think your suggested strategy for the national GOP is a lot better than what they have done instead. A generation of Latino voters have been lost to the GOP, probably multiple generations are locked in lifetime democratic voters now due to the GOP expressed racist animosity regarding immigrants.

Daly City is a close-in suburb to the City of San Francisco. Pretty good for transporation connections, the 280 freeway heading south is very good. BART access is good. Airport access is good. Close to good beaches in Pacifica. Has advantages over many other suburban options, especially for its beneficial location for commuters (no bridge traffic jams). Very weak in terms of night life and culture compared with S.F..
