Gun control? Explain why the right wing generally opposes policy to gather data about gun violence. 1 It appears that fear the chance of finding inconvenient facts.

I notice that Phil Lesh and John K switched sides on stage, since I last saw Furthur at Monterey. How long has that been the stage arrangement?

A sure fire way to make the bus go faster would be dedicated bus lanes. (Possible if the lane dedicated to automobile storage was converted to a transit lane.)

An underground parking garage probably would cost $100,000,000. I would prefer that kind of money go to improving the bus system.

I could ask the same of you. Though, in good faith, I can say that you and I have a largely different world view, unlikely to reconcile. I value guns, and I agree with Scalia's 'longstanding prohibitions' ruling. Funny thing, you seem to hold an opinion even farther to the far-right of an extremely right wing justice and a couple hundred recent court rulings upholding gun laws as being constitutional. Wow, way out there.

"free" parking isn't free. What actually is happening is that our government gives away public space for people to use for "free" for automobile storage. A better description would be 'subsidized parking'.

The question to ask is whether subsidized parking is the best use of this public space.

Agreed, there is an epidemic of suicides. 17,000 per year. And gun proliferation makes it much easier for suicidal people to kill themselves. You want to make it even easier for them, because of selfish personal convenience issues. Not nice.

Automobiles are much more useful than guns. Both have about 30K fatalities in the USA per year. Your gun collection seems to amount to little more than a hobby. I have little sympathy for your inconvenience.

By the way, CCW permit holders commit suicide at about 50% greater rate than non-CCW permit holders. That study indicates that avoiding a CCW permit lowers your risk of suicide. (Not to mention the risk of suicide by your children.)

4 lives? Your math might be a little bit off, there are about 17,000 suicides by firearm in the USA each year. Regardless, I can appreciate how your convenience is vastly more important than saving four people's lives. Sorry for asking, don't inconvenience yourself even more by typing a reply.

Two days is inconvenient for you, certainly. It is also inconvenient to someone impulsive and/or suicidal. I think the benefit of avoiding a few impulsive acts/suicides in your neighborhood outweighs your personal inconvenience, no?

I routinely take the lane, and when some car presses my ass I pull over and let them pass. And, in my life at least, most motorists are nice.

The important thing about taking the lane is that it makes it easier for motorists to see you.

What do you think of my 50 gallon planted tank? by SaltyBoatrin Aquariums

[–]SaltyBoatr[S] 0 points1 point ago

I have been keeping aquariums, nearly continuously, since 1962. One bias I have developed personally is that too many fish makes too much waste loading on the tank and takes away from the fun. Most recently I am on the kick of wanting pretty plants, with just a very few fish.

I am guessing you are suggesting the Pleco for algae control? Vibrantly growing healthy plants beat down algae. During my struggle to get this tank up an running there were days when the tank was disgustingly over grown with algae, but as soon as the plants 'got happy' the algae became non-existent.

Just bought my first tank. What can I keep and what needs replaced? by fusedproin Aquariums

[–]SaltyBoatr 1 point2 points ago

One of the first things I recommend that you buy are the tools you need for water changes. Keeping an aquarium, successfully, involves observing the tank closely and taking care of it appropriately. You learn this eventually, but it starts with observations.

At a minimum you will need a siphon tube and a bucket or two. Depending on the number of fish, very typically, you will need to be changing 10 to 20% of the water about every week. Having the tools and the setup to make this task easy has a huge impact on your actually doing it, and hence your chance of success.

Also, if you don't have it already, (I didn't see it in that kit) get yourself a thermometer and a net.

How do you get yours so vibrant?

I am just coming into figuring out how this works. (After more than a little grief and failure trying.) The basic formula as I presently see is this: Vibrant plants need four things, and missing any of the four,...then the plants suffer. 1) Bright daylight colored light, 6,500K. 2) A good source of CO2. 3) Iron supplements. 4) Macro-nutrients/NPK. Given these four things, the plants grow vibrantly.

Thanks, I can tell that I have some trimming to do going forward. Indeed, looking at the tank today, against the photo posted at Imgur from 36 hours ago, I can see growth.

I am not really planning on lots of fish. Presently there are five white clouds and one clown loach. I am planning on adding a few more clown loaches (because I can tell that they are schooling fish and one alone shows signs of stress). Two of the white clouds are heavily gravid now, so I am expecting babies.

I started using the Flourish brand, but after reading the labels, I switched to a 'home brew' based on Miracle-Grow water soluble orchid food. The LFS guy explained to me that most people rely on the fish metabolism to provide NPK, but that consider that I don't really want a lot of fish that I need to supplement NPK. I have been experiment to find the 'proper' dosage, and haven't found the upper limit yet. In other words, I have been putting what I had imagined to be toxic levels of added nitrates and the plants just voraciously suck it up. (say, a teaspoon twice a week of Miracle-grow) ...and zero algae coupled with explosive plant growth.

I must admit that I am feeling good about this tank, especially because it was such a struggle to get it growing. Several times, I set the tank up and the plants died. Finally, after discussing this with my LFS, we figured out what I was doing wrong. I had great light, (12ea 17watt CFL's, 6500K), plenty of iron, plenty of injected CO2. The thing missing was N,P,K! Ever since I started adding N,P,K the plants just exploded in growth.

The frightening thing to me is that the natural behavior of the human species doesn't react en mass in advance of the catastrophe. Tragedy of the commons. And, the time scale of the climate has inertia.
