TROPHY CASE

Looking for some advice - any electronics nerds / hobbyists / professionals? by liveat60fpsin brisbane

[–]Robert_Houdin 0 points1 point ago

^ This.

I am a member of HSBNE and am currently working on a UAV (tilt-rotor quadcopter), which, given that you love "anything related to space, aviation, robotics or programming in general" should make you very, very hard in the pants.

I also second butters1337's suggestion to get into the Arduino microcontroller.

PM me and I'll add you on Google+.

TIL that Olivia Hussey, the actor who played Juliet in the 1968 film Romeo and Juliet, wasn't legally able to attend the 18+ premiere due to its nudity, even though it was her breasts that were shown. (Trivia section) by MrOddsAgainstin todayilearned

[–]Robert_Houdin 6 points7 points ago

You are correct.

Tysonus is referring to what is commonly known as a "Romeo and Juliet clause" (yes, a tad ironic), and most (if not all) Australian states do not have this clause in the relevant legislation. It is an oft-quoted misconception.

Tysonus, if you care to link to the exact part of legislation that supports your statement, I will humbly offer to eat my words.

I don't need parking, but for the sake of others who might be interested, could you clarify whether you will be loaning this car space free of charge? Otherwise, I think you should put the cost in the description.

Just read Sam Harris' Moral Landscape. What are r/philosophy's thoughts on the idea? Can we have a secular objective morality? by Incapacitatein philosophy

[–]Robert_Houdin 2 points3 points ago

I call it the "We don't have to engage in serious argument because we're only pretending like we're engaging in serious argument and we're doing it for the benefit of people who are not engaging in serious argument because they're only pretending to engage in serious argument" ploy.

You need to work on a catchier title.

We should protect our own.

No. This sentiment is the exact reason why corruption is so rampant in organisations such as the police force.

We should seek truth and justice, even when it means having to stand against one of our own.

Just read Sam Harris' Moral Landscape. What are r/philosophy's thoughts on the idea? Can we have a secular objective morality? by Incapacitatein philosophy

[–]Robert_Houdin 21 points22 points ago

The book is not written for, or marketed towards serious philosophers or academics. It is intended for the average person (not the average r/philosophy subscriber) who has no idea about utilitarianism or Kantian theories. Harris merely sets out to demonstrate that morality can be based in secularism - not that one secular theory is better than another. Consequently, "the need to justify utilitarianism in the face of other secular moral theories" is not within the scope of the book.

Per-kilometer tolling considered for Sydney by [deleted]in australia

[–]Robert_Houdin 0 points1 point ago

One year since the election and finally we're getting a glimpse of Barry O'Farrell's plan to beat the traffic problems in Sydney, and that is to make tolls so expensive that no-one can afford to drive any more," Mr Robertson said.

Although obviously hyperbolic, I don't see a problem with this.

Per-kilometer tolling considered for Sydney by [deleted]in australia

[–]Robert_Houdin 5 points6 points ago

The more roads we build, the more cars people will buy to fill those roads. At some point, we need to do something to decrease congestion on existing roads, and encourage people to use other more environmentally-friendly forms of transport. That something might just be tolls.

Robot Car Intersections Are Terrifyingly Efficient by bobbarnes1981in robotics

[–]Robert_Houdin 1 point2 points ago

Actually my biggest concern on this front would be the hackers who (for the lulz or profits) take control of the AI in a car and redirect it to another location, disable safety features and crash it, or just disable and lock it down in the middle of 10 lanes of traffic with the doors locked.

This would be easily solved with a simple physical kill-switch inside the car, that disables all of the electronics.

[–]Robert_Houdin 2 points3 points ago

I'm sorry that you are being downvoted, because you are absolutely correct.

Removing the "perks" of being female is just as important for feminism and gender equality as removing things like the "glass ceiling", because these "perks" rely solely upon the stereotype of women being the weaker, less capable gender.

Women are just as capable of standing as men, and should not be treated otherwise.
