Jon is soooo attractive!

My brother died today, at 28 years old. I've never had to deal with the loss of a family member before, do you have any pieces of advice you could offer? by Jinjitin AskReddit

My mother died last year suddenly of a stroke. She suffered a preliminary stroke after competing in a triathlon but made a full recovery. A week later I made spaghetti for her because she was meant to be resting. That night my step-father called me at 2am from the hospital saying she had another stroke. A week after that she died from brain swelling and pneumonia.

For me it all started with being numb and I just stopped caring about what was happening around me. I hid in my house, but I hated being alone so my sister and I were always together. The numbness gradually wore off and I actually started feeling that my stepfather had it worse than me, he and my mum were really in love and were about to move to the coast, a dream they had for a really long time. Looking after other people became a haven for me, but I started blocking myself off from the situation and not letting myself feel anything. I started having crazy mood swings and trouble sleeping, and I just ate junk and put on a whole lot of weight.

I would probably suggest seeing a counsellor (maybe through work) when you feel up to it, they are really helpful at working through what you're feeling and what you need at the time. One thing I have found helpful is to remind yourself what your brother gave you, and why it makes you a better person. When my sister and I say something at the same time that is something our mother would have said, it makes me want to cry and laugh at the same time.

This year my sister, stepfather and I are doing a 3 day walk through national park to raise money for a stroke foundation, so maybe somewhere down the line, find something you can do to make you feel that you're potentially saving someone from the situation you are going through.

Give yourself what you need at the time, but remember that there is a fine line between not dealing with grief because you are scared to and not dealing with it because you actually can't. Each day gets easier but it can be by such a small amount that you don't even notice. I have a new appreciation for life and every now and then I stop and remind myself to just look around and enjoy where I am and what I'm doing.

When you feel up to it, try reading a bit of Kurt Vonnegut. He has such a great understanding of the human condition and his books are full of black humour.

"I urge you to please notice when you are happy, and exclaim or murmur or think at some point, 'If this isn't nice, I don't know what is.'"

tldr; take things as they come, be gentle with yourself and still allow yourself to feel happiness

My friend always claimed that Obi-Wan died in the original Star Wars film because he tried to prove he could fight with his eyes closed, and failed. Reddit, what situations have you been in where friends just don't "get it"? by ai1265in AskReddit

A good non-superhero series is Locke and Key. After a tradgedy befalls a family they move back into their ancient family home to rehabilitate. But the house is full of keys, some of which change the doors they are used on, some that change the users of the keys themselves...or something like that.

Edit: I derped a word.

"With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world." - Max Ehrmann

Part of his poem Desiderata, the whole thing is pretty special. I heard it at a funeral recently, it makes me feel better whenever I feel a bit sad.

Keep a list of what food and drinks you buy, then see how much you spent on them over a month. Then get on the web and find recipes for the food that you buy when you're out, have a go at making it yourself at home. Do this for another month and total up your spendings. See how much you saved then use that money for necessities of put it into savings.

Plain white vinegar is always good to have around, you can use it to clean, too.

Have a look in thrift stores for a dutch oven style pan that can go on the stove and in the oven.

Bulk meat, sectioned up into zip locked bags in the freezer has always been a lifesaver for me.

One large pot, one large saucepan, colander (depending on how much pasta you eat), stock, a few large flat oven trays, one deep oven tray (for roasts/vegetables), baking paper, alfoil, cling wrap, a few containers for left overs (essential if you like cooking large amounts of food and freezing for later).

As you probably already know, the internet is indispensable for cheap cooking ideas, there are even a couple of websites where you enter in a few ingredients that you have at home and it finds recipes for you to make.

Some general advice: Just keep an eye on what you spend and try to make sure it is within your means and avoid credit cards like the plague. Enjoy your new freedom and indulge in everything you weren't allowed to do back at home!

I literally have $10, what can I make to last me the next 2 days? by meechmongin food

[–]RawLegs 1 point2 points ago

Sausages are always cheap and if you have them with bread they're filling, too. Also, some supermarkets are now selling second grade fruit and vegetables for ridiculously cheap prices but it may take some time and detective work to figure out which ones do it in your area. Also, you can make a cheap and delicious coleslaw with chopped red and white cabbage, a grated carrot, 1/4 cup mayo mixed with some white vinegar, salt and pepper. If you make a big bowl of it it lasts a few days and provides some variety.

I love Venture Brothers, but I'm scared of showing it to people because there is so much stuff you miss if you don't listen carefully. They have to watch it by themselves, then if they like it I'll watch it with them.

Caramel Cake for my sister. by RawLegsin food

The actual sponge wasn't flavoured, but I left it that way because I thought that flavour in the middle and the icing would be enough.

I let the frosting chill for a few hours and it was stiff enough to spread. I also made honeycomb to go on top instead of the pecans.

Honeycomb

Heat up 2 tbsp golden syrup with 4 tbsp caster sugar until bubbling and caramelising (5-6 mins). Add a heaped tsp of bicarbonate of soda and mix quickly. Turn out the bubbly mixture onto a greased piece of baking paper and allow to set. Smash to pieces.

Reddit; My boyfriend wants a threesome, what do I do? by zombie1988in AskReddit

[–]RawLegs 1 point2 points ago

If he feels that you somehow 'owe' this to him, I think that's a good indication that he has some terrible ideas about what a relationship should be.

Also, your best friend agreeing to it seems strange, have you told her your misgivings about it?

I think you and your boyfriend should have a talk about his double standards, and if he can't 'deal' with you refusing to participate in a threesome then get rid of him and find someone who deosn't make you feel like you're not enough.
