DIY automated tilt head with a twist- need your input Redditors! by PseudoPsychoin photography

[–]PseudoPsycho[S] 0 points1 point ago

The belatedness continues! Apologies for the delay, and thanks for the reply. In case you're interested, an update on the project:

Programmer friend and I have made the brief a lot more complicated (as always happens with my projects :) ) and now we're using stepper motors to control mirrors for full X/Y control, powered by a fez panda (his arduino board has recently died inexplicably). The plan is to run the whole system with a Raspberry Pi (plus the GPIO board they're releasing) and three laser diodes (red, green, and blue, set in an aluminium water jacket I'll get a friend to machine) and dichroic mirrors to combine the beams....a few friends of friends later and I'll CNC mill the laser/mirror/water jacket array into a tight small package that I can tripod mount with battery/R-Pi etc attached to the leg.

I might put in a LCD touch screen to control it or just run a small button array to correspond to shape programs etc.. or i might not simply because the intended use environment is primarily abandoned buildings and building sites... so the system has to be rugged enough to survive throwing over a shoulder and running away from security guards.

The next hurdle is laser beam angle: I want 150deg x and y to have the ability to paint two walls of a room from a corner... but to do that with with two mirrors (like a DJ laser system) is pretty much impossible (well sorta... very hard to maintain the same speeds for x and y movement as one mirror would have to be much larger than the other) so my friend and I are now working out a way to accurately put the x and y beam deflection on the one mirror while maintaining absolute minimal mass attached to the mirror... So I need to do more research.

(sorry for belated reply) I just drew a diagram for you, i've already sorted out how I'm doing horizontal laser projection it's just the tilting of the device i need help with now.

Melbournites, do you know any abandoned buildings/underground tunnels that could be fun to explore? by yoghurt_ninjain melbourne

[–]PseudoPsycho 0 points1 point ago

Yeah it's pretty good; I've done a few photoshoots there. The alley behind the building is where you'll get in, but the holes get patched and remade randomly so you might not be able to go in. Check behind all the dumpsters etc for hidden holes.

Awesome and serene view from the top, looking down on the street.

The other cool option you have is to set windows to 'detached' (it's an option in each window's little menu) and then you can treat all of the elements in FLS like the elements in photoshop (ie floating around your desktop freely)

THE FUTURE OF THE H-PATTERN MANUAL TRANSMISSION IS HERE! Gone are the days of battling a heavy clutch pedal in traffic. With Synchro-Clutch technology a driver has all of the FUN of rowing the H-Pattern, with none of the drawbacks of a conventional Manual transmission! by Ottonomousin cars

[–]PseudoPsycho 9 points10 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I'm struggling to see the point. Unless you've got a heavy sport clutch there is almost no fatigue (well unless you spend an hour straight in traffic) and the difficulty you speak of seems to only occur for the first few months of driving. On top of that, any fatigue there was is now moved to your arm instead and my legs have much greater endurance than my arms.

Regarding maintenance: assuming that the components are on the shafts of the gearbox then maintenance requires gearbox disassembly. Sure you could design gearboxes to have a removable access panel and removable gear assemblies but this would probably compromise strength and torque capabilities, and lead to packaging issues for the car makers. Replacing a clutch in a modern car is only not parts-expensive only labor-expensive and that is only due to the time required to access the gearbox/bellhousing. This will be the same if this product is used unless you convince car manufacturers to rethink packaging.

Regarding driving pleasure: The fun of the H-pattern is the skill involved (a sense of pride and accomplishment) and the high precision and speed of clutch engagements and disengagements (clutch kicking, clutch dumping, riding a clutch round a corner to keep revs up (ie early vtec car with unsuitable ratios for the track etc)). With your system you've forced the driver to take their hands off the wheel for some advanced techniques and reduced the sense of accomplishment. Given the coupling of input surfaces (ie clutch pedal and shifter are now the same thing) it may reduce the the options available to the driver. For driving pleasure I see almost no gain over a automated dual-clutch system (ie DSG etc) as the pleasure does not come from physically moving a lever but the aforementioned reasons.

Torque capabilities and upgrading: If you keep the same normal force (the pressing force between clutch surfaces in this context) changing the diameter of a clutch changes the amount of torque it can transfer. To have the same torque capabilities using your system in an existing car you will have to vastly increase the force applied to the friction materials as space restrictions inside the gearbox restrict your ability to use multi-layer or increased diameter clutches. Given the leverage available to hydraulic systems in current vehicles, the much larger friction surface available, and the larger diameter you're going to have a lot of trouble producing the same force while maintaining driver comfort. If you've already solved that issue (congratulations, wanna tell me how? :P) we still have the issue of upgrading the car. People who still love a H-pattern manual are the group most likely to modify their vehicles and the space restrictions of the inside of the gearbox mean multiplate clutch assemblies and high-torque clutches are gonna be either difficult or impossible.

I might be wrong though :)

Beautiful spiderweb in large space; how can I capture it? by spiderwebphotogin photography

[–]PseudoPsycho 0 points1 point ago*

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

My suggestion is fire a flash (or two) at it angled in such a way that the light only hits sky and spiderweb. Do this on a clear morning/night at sunrise or sunset with the beautiful sky behind it. Bonus points for gelling the flashes so the spiderweb forms a nice combination with the background, be it unnatural (vibrant coloured light) or natural (ie gelled to match the sunset's light).

Do let us know how you go.

EDIT: Also, misting it with water as others have suggested will make it pop.

EDIT2: One other thing, you can have the flashes freeze the spiderweb in place and have a nice long exposure at night as another option.

Help me pick a wide-angle lens for Nikon FX? by 73kbin photography

Who cares what the lens was intended for? Wouldn't the lens's suitability for the task be determined purely by the results it gets?

As for comparing it to the fisheye... well yeah, but it's all nikon offers.

...and that tokina you linked? Yep, it's good too. More expensive and so forth, but it doesn't counter my point.

Basically you're saying that a lens that is sharp, rectilinear, and cheap is not an option only because it wasn't designed for the role? Who gives a shit about anything other than the results you get.

[–]PseudoPsycho 0 points1 point ago

I don't care about what acronym's are written on the side of the lens, I'm more interested in the results it gets.

That 11-16mm, when at 16mm, is sharper in the centre andthe corners than the old nikon 16mm prime when measured on a full frame body. There is approximately the same vignetting as the nikon and it's vastly cheaper.

So why exactly isn't it an option? Sure you can't use it at 11mm... but if you just consider it a 16mm prime that outperforms the equivalent nikon for less money it's win-win.

Also, no need to be so arrogant.

Actually at 16mm it works on full frame and is better than the nikon 16mm FX prime. EDIT: oh and it's cheaper :P

I'm in the same situation myself. The problem I have is the 16-35 gets mixed reviews, and not just for IQ elements that are irrelevant to me (ie distortion)... some say it's super sharp and others say it's not. I also shoot in the dark without moving subjects a lot so the VR would actually make up the stop difference for me.

As for the mixed reviews on the 16-35 i'm not sure if it's a QC issue or what, but it makes me very hessitant to buy one. If I do, i'll buy it from a local store and do the lens test-exchange shuffle.

You've got that backwards, the capability of abs that you state is a by-product of the physics sinembarg0 mentioned.

Also, to put sinembarg0's paragraph another way: When the wheels are sliding (kinetic friction) you have less stopping power than when the contact patch is stationery relative to the road. ABS does allow you to change direction somewhat while stopping but it significantly reduces the cornering force available as it is set up primarily to shrink the stopping distance as much as possible.

What neilfraser was saying was that a train wheel sliding provides similar stopping force to one that isn't so ABS on a train would be pointless.
