Holy shit, people from Sacramento drive at 130 mph? Stay off my freeways please!

(Sacramento's 85 miles away if I'm generous with the measurement. 40 minutes is completely unrealistic unless you're driving at insane speeds and somehow managing to do that even on the part of 80 that's by Berkeley, which is usually practically a parking lot :P).

That's why I didn't mention San Jose's population. It's huge population-wise, but as a cultural center it's a non-starter.

It goes like this:

San Jose: Non-starter culturally
Santa Rosa: Non-starter either culturally or population-wise.
Sacramento: Important in the sense that it's the capital, but really, non-starter culturally--like Albany in NY, when you think California you generally don't think Sacramento.
Oakland: Well, it's not the OAKLAND Bay Area, is it?

Huh, that's funny. So if he's talking to someone from London and says "The City" he would expect them to understand he means NYC?

I'm not really sure what we're arguing about, if anything, then. My point is, although Sacramento is the capital of California, it's kind of like Albany in NY--barely a blip on the radar of anyone's consciousness who isn't involved in government work in the state. How could it ever be "THE City?"

Note that I used to rage pretty seriously against that nomenclature, and I still think it's pretty navel-gazing, but I've just come to see the logic behind it.

How's saying "Ugh... San Fran. At least you didn't call it Frisco" demeaning somebody? I don't see any personal attacks in there.

To be fair, none of them really hold up a candle to San Francisco culturally. I mean, San Jose? Santa Rosa? WTF is in Santa Rosa? It's a city of 150K people. I could see the argument for Oakland maybe. Sacramento is actually relatively far, maybe the people near there refer to it as "the City?" (or at least don't refer to SF as such since they're not in the Bay Area?)

Don't men in India not really wear shorts in general? In my experience it's not very common (though I haven't spent much time in Delhi). Are you moving there from abroad (either returning after a long time away or are you a ABCD)? If so, it may just mark you as a foreigner.

Also, and this is probably an unpopular view on r/malefashionadvice, but take it from a woman, EVERYONE looks ridiculous in shoes without socks. That being said, you're a man, your legs are hairy, there's nothing wrong with it. Own it.

Well, to be fair, to immediately dump someone over almost anything they say is an overreaction. But I don't think that cheating is justifiable, so it is a red flag.

Indian High Court rules that the right to abort a pregnancy in a marriage rests with the wife and not husband. by StrangerInAlpsin worldnews

[–]Proeliata 0 points1 point ago*

Wish whatever you want on me, I am responsible, it won't happen. Whether or not I get a woman pregnant is entirely decided by my actions.

Like I said--you're either an idiot, or willfully blinding yourself to cold, hard statistics. The same thing, really. oh and this is totally a child! How could I have been so foolish.

It is hard to really argue differently...

It's not hard, I do it all the time.

Succulents also need drainage, it doesn't look like those planters provide it, but I could be wrong. Plus, how much earth can you put in a cork? They're hardy, but they need SOME earth. I'd be curious to see them a month hence.

I'm not saying it doesn't look awesome, I just don't think it'll look awesome for all that long--which is often the case with carelessly planted (insufficient earth, no drainage, etc) succulents that I've bought in the past.

Man, I'm tired of arguing with you. You're one of those people who looks at scientific data and statistics and rejects them because they're "controversial." Guess what--the start of brain activity and the failure rates of contraceptives are "controversial" only to people like you who want to bend reality to their argument that anyone who gets pregnant without wanting to is being irresponsible, and that a zygote is the same thing as a newborn. You're also unable to comprehend simple facts like that whether or not you use a barrier method of protection does not necessarily make you safer depending on what method of contraceptive you're using with the barrier method. You're also unable to comprehend the simple fact that people are just not going to use condoms in a monogamous longterm relationship--sorry, but they aren't.

If I were an asshole, I would wish an unplanned, unwanted pregnancy on you, but I'm not. I just think it's a shame you're so willfully ignorant about the chances of accidental pregnancy--"IT COULD NEVER HAPPEN TO ME BECAUSE I'M RESPONSIBLE" is something nature laughs at every day.

BTW, not that it matters, I'm against abortions past the first trimester except in exceptional cases--but you're goddamn right that I believe that women should be able to fuck whomever they want, whenever they want (although I'm happily and monogamously married myself), I believe they should use protection (which is why I use an IUD, the SAFEST and MOST DEPENDABLE form of protection available that doesn't fuck up my hormones). I take all possible reasonable precautions, but if I got pregnant right now, you're goddamned right I would have an abortion as soon as possible in the process, because I neither want nor have time nor can afford a child at this point in my life and I don't believe it's worth it to jeopardize my future or that of a child out of a misguided belief that a clump of cells is anywhere near alive.

That statistic includes people using the contraceptive incorrectly or not using it every instance of sexual activity....

People are fallible. Welcome to humanity. If you're writing legislation that's based on people performing everything perfectly all the time, you're bound for disappointment. Hell, if you're expecting yourself and your partner to do everything perfectly all the time, you're bound for the same place. This is why the IUD, despite your eyerolling, is such a good method of contraception--there's very little chance of doing anything wrong since once it's in there, it requires no action on your part. Notice how both the TYPICAL use and PERFECT use for a Paragard IUD have a 0.6 percent failure rate--about 2.5 times as good as the "pill + condom" typical use failure rate. The failure rate for a Mirena (hormonal) IUD is even lower, 0.2%.

Thats actually extremely interesting. Again though those statistics are based on, as you say, TYPICAL usage. Which in my understanding is incorrect or inconsistent use of contraceptives...

Typical usage includes a ripped condom, or a pill taken at the wrong time, which is EXTREMELY common. That's the thing about TYPICAL usage, it's how the stuff is actually used, not how it SHOULD be used. If everyone drove perfectly, there would be no car accidents either. People aren't perfect in following directions--not even you :V This is the fallacy everyone always has, that since they're in control obviously things are going to go perfectly.

Right... Your chances of pulling an ace from each deck is the same. Your chances of pulling 2 aces from 2 decks simultaneously is different... Thats not to say once you pull one ace, your chances for pulling another ace go down. Thats not the issue.

Exactly--the chances of pulling 2 aces from 2 decks simultaneously is measured in the same way as two methods of birth control failing simultaneously. I never said that your chances of pulling another ace go down, or that the chances of the 2nd method of birth control failing go up. The chances of them both failing simultaneously is the chance of the first failing times the chance of the second failing.

I don't see why making up a new word for something makes something different.

Uh, fetus is not a new word. And it exists because it describes something different.

Also I don't know if you have answered my query on partial birth abortion.

Given that partial birth abortion accounted for 0.17% of all abortions performed in the year 2000 in the US, to quote you, it's close enough to 0% for me to disregard it. Wait--is that not acceptable? Then accidental pregnancy rates of 1.4% or higher should not be acceptable either. If you're not going to legislate based on 1.4% failure rate (which is actually ridiculously low, as I said, because the vast majority of people in stable long-term relationships will not use condoms) then legislating on a 0.17% rate is laughable.

but what the fuck should we do about it? Abort black babies because no one wants them?

uh, what we're doing now? Let women make the decision of whether or not they want to carry the child to term?

When if you differentiate between a child and a fetus, does the differentiation make itself evident?

There are two points. Either a) viability outside the womb or b) brain activity (which STARTS at 20 weeks: http://tigtogblog.blogspot.com/2006/05/fetal-brain-development-myths-and.html) There's obviously no such "millisecond," but just because there's no millisecond where a tadpole becomes a frog doesn't mean that tadpoles are different from frogs.
