The purchase order to buy two cameras is my favorite. "Inside baseball" jokes are always the funniest. (Even if Community's "inside baseball" tendencies is one of the reasons we're in this mess.)

The Hard Truths Behind Dan Harmon's Community Ousting -- Vulture by redredtiorin community

[–]PostSincerity 10 points11 points ago

Refreshed by the last paragraph. Since the news broke I've definitely been wondering if Harmon's working style might be better suited to feature films. After all it worked out for #oneseasonandacancellation guru Jud Apatow.

Closing shots of the first episode and last episode both with Winger in the exact centre of the frame. In the premiere shot he is alone and in the finale shot he is surrounded by friends, reflecting the growth of his character. Having the books open in a similar fashion seems to indicate this is no accident.

It's kind of how TV's worked since the days of M * A * S * H, it's just now with the internet the audience is much better informed. This AV Club article on the subject is pretty good.

How we all must feel right now by Bigettoin community

[–]PostSincerity 2 points3 points ago

That's my understanding. Although it's been pointed out that NBC could have pushed for Harmon to stay and did not. Some have suggested they could have gone so far as to require Dan's participation in a contractual agreement for a fourth season. I don't have any knowledge of how easy or difficult that might have been to negotiate but they clearly didn't do it. So any blame that can be assigned to NBC is about passive behavior and the main culprit is Sony Pictures Television.

While cable networks often own the rights to the shows they air that is less likely to be the case with broadcast TV. NBC is merely the vehicle that delivers Community, they do not own it. The owner is Sony Pictures Television. A network could conceivably make suggestions and requests but ultimately decisions like this rest with the production company that owns the intellectual property.

Yeah, Colour of Magic was actually my first Disc novel. There's nothing wrong with it, it just doesn't have the "heart" the series eventually developed... at least, from my perspective.

EDIT: "Mort" is pretty early in the published order but still has some of that heart I mentioned. It also let's you get to know one of the most important characters and has a line I always consider when choosing to do good or bad.

Would you rather they canceled the show insted of firing Dan Harmon? by Latidderin community

[–]PostSincerity 29 points30 points ago

Absolutely. The way I think of it is Sony Pictures had a beautiful giraffe but wanted a horse instead so they chopped off the neck at the shoulders and said, "Enh, just as good." I will not watch a decapitated giraffe.

Wait, what, Neil Gaiman is a Community fan?! Actually, maybe this shouldn't have surprised me.

I see this comment is two weeks old but I always have to chime in if someone mentions starting Discworld. It's probably my favorite fiction series of all time... it's comic fantasy so one of the primary goals is to be lighthearted and humorous but Pratchett has a habit of inserting "stealth philosophy" into many of the books. For some reason I really enjoy being slapped in the face with a heavy thought about life, death, loyalty, war or belief systems after pages and pages of goofy fantasy parody. I think it's a major contributing factor to me actually caring what happens to the characters which doesn't always happen with works that are largely intended to be humorous. Honestly, Pratchett is practically his own genre. As a series it's pretty weird in that you don't necessarily have to read all the books in their published order. There are six or seven different storylines/character groupings and all of a grouping's books should be read in order but other than that you generally don't have to read them in the order published. If you look the books up on Wikipedia and one of the character threads sounds boring to you try a different one. Personally I recommend "Small Gods" as a starter to see if you like it. Thirteenth book in the series so it really represents the eventual style more than the first several books but in internal chronology it probably takes place around a hundred years before everything else. It's a standalone book with characters that don't appear anywhere else so you would probably only really miss out on two jokes. I was tempted to re-read the first few pages just now but I'd probably keep reading trough the night. OK, this is getting long.

TL;DR: Check out "Small Gods."

It's like "get ready." "I'm fixin' to go to the sandwich shop, y'all want anything?“ Oh, there's also the noun form such as "turkey with all the fixens" but I don't know if that's only said in the South. Probably, it sounds like it.

I heard the New York Time's YouTube critic just quit his desk; you should send them your clippings and give it a shot.

I was raised in a cosmopolitan Southern city by Yankee parents so I more or less sound like I'm from the Midwest or California usually but I still say y'all. Also say fixin' and never knew it was a Southernism until college in Wisconsin.

Thesis on Community by aveces_noin community

I've always been intrigued by the self-reflexivity of the show. I think there's a lot of meat on that bone... and the lessons learned are applicable to other works, particularly the trade off between rewarding loyal viewers vs. alienating new viewers.

I don't know anything about this man except some of his quotations but I want to learn about him just based on those. Like you say, he was critical of organized religion during his life and supposedly on his deathbed was asked if he was afraid to confront the possibility of an afterlife given his history with theism. He replied something along the lines of, "Jesus will forgive me. It's his job."
