I played that game for a year, maybe a year and a half, and somehow it still means more to me than the three years I put into WoW. We had weekly zerg nights, when everyone in the server turned out for huge wars in Emain Macha or the Alb frontier. We had dedicated 8v8 and 16v16 teams. We had dueling leagues with a website that tracked stats. Because there was little to do at lev 50 other than RvR, we found so many ways to make it fun. Then the expansions came out, there was more PvE content and RvR died for awhile. Something happened within Mythic that fractured the community, the game never really recovered. When Star Wars Galaxies came out I switched over. Then WoW sucked me in. But man, I will never forget those epic battles in DAOC.

Stephen King - Under the Dome

Despite loving many of King's earlier works, I haven't read one of his novels in years. When I saw his latest opus on the shelf with the tag "The best yet from the best ever!" I figured, what the hell. The premise seemed interesting enough, some sort of impenetrable force field cuts off a small town from the rest of the world, residents go apeshit. I'm usually willing to give King the benefit of the doubt when it comes to plotlines, because his characters are so compelling.

Sadly, this is not the case in Under the Dome. I was 3/4 through the book and still didn't like or care about any of the characters. They're all stereotypes, and uninteresting stereotypes at that. The dialogue is forced and hokey, especially the parts with town teenagers using slang. You get the feeling he consulted one of those "parent's handbooks" filled with helpful buzzwords to use around your kids in an effort to relate. The adults aren't much better. I finally reached a point where I couldn't stand the characters any more, flipped directly to the end, found out what caused the force field, and put the book aside.

If you're a dedicated King fan, you might find something to like here, but for me it should have been left where it started, in his unfinished works drawer. C-
