TROPHY CASE

Ancient evidence of Bethlehem unearthed by skarface6in Christianity

[–]Phaz 5 points6 points ago

For anyone who's interested in archeology and the bible (Specifically the OT) you should check out this. It is a NOVA special on that topic that goes in great depth about what we have found and what we know. It's an extremely thorough and fair look at things.

The content has been 'approved' as being very accurate from the Biblical Archaeology Review, several prominent rabbis and members of the catholic church (among others).

OMG YOU GUYS YOU GUYS special session including civil unions bill is happening OMG OMG by Saydrahin Denver

[–]Phaz 1 point2 points ago

It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

The bill just very narrowly got to the point it did, and there were still a few questions about it (the last committee added 2 religious amendments/exclusions to it that many said would 'gut' it. It was unknown if they would have the votes to remove them. One of the people voting for those amendments was also the republican from the committee to vote for the bill).

3 committees it went through, each with a single republican swapping sides to vote for it. For a special session, it has to start over from the start and go through that process again. The speaker of the house/majority leader (I forget which) (as I understand it) have the ability to swap out any committee member from their side at any time (i.e. if someone is on vacation). Thus, they could easily just swap out those 3 republicans for others who would vote against it and kill it in committee before it gets a chance to make it to the floor. That would help them save face in the eyes of many people, and give them better posturing than they have right now in November.

Civil-unions bill will be heard in House committee this afternoon by kidbomin Denver

[–]Phaz 4 points5 points ago

It is a responsible thing to marry your partner and spend your life rearing and protecting your offspring until it is able to protect itself.

That's what this is about. There are currently ~4,000 kids in colorado who have same sex parents. Those kids are not as protected as much as kids with straight married parents. There are all kinds of legal benefits/rules/etc that apply to a HUGE number of different situations that protect the children. Right now, if a gay couple who has kids wants that same protection, they have to spend a shit ton of time and money with lawyers to individually set many of them up. Then they have to hope that when the time of need does come, what they have is enough to handle that situation.

If you really think the goal of marriage is being able to protect your children, then you should see why gay couples are trying to get the chance to do that.

Civil-unions bill will be heard in House committee this afternoon by kidbomin Denver

[–]Phaz 5 points6 points ago*

I'm surprised this isn't getting more attention.

Basically, the bill has made it past 2 of the 3 committees it needs to go through in the house (it easily passed the senate), it died in one of those committees last year but one republican in each committee flipped sides and allowed it to advance.

The third comittee should be hearing it soon (they meet in a few minutes). It should pass that one as well, as the vice chair (republican) said she supports it.

That means it can go to a vote of the general floor, where it should also pass (33-32 republican majority, at least 5 republicans have said they will support it). The governor will sign it.

Thus, this has all the votes needed to pass. However, it still might not. The bill must be read on the house floor today so it can be voted on tomorrow. The session ends tomorrow at midnight. All bills not voted on by then will die.

It hasn't even made it out of committee (as of right now), and still then needs to be read on the floor. The republicans are in charge of all that, and if/when that happens. It is very within their power to simply stall the bill from being read, and thus killing it even though it has the votes to pass. It's looking right now like the republican leadership might very well try and do that. This should be big news.

Democracy in action.

Update: Committee was originally going to meet at 1:30, didn't meet till 2:55. Originally civil unions was supposed to be the 5th bill up for discussion. They already spent (wasted) time debating 3 bills that are already dead (there isn't time for them to go through the rest of the steps) there are now 7 bills before the civil unions one. Also the speaker of the house was on a radio show just now and implied very heavily that he was going to prevent the bill from coming up for debate when it reaches the house.

[s] Millenium.Stephano wins TakeTV Reloaded Invitational by beating Empire.Kas 4:0 by SC2Newsin starcraft

[–]Phaz -6 points-5 points ago

I think that's the point. You can't beat it. The best players out there can't beat it with the strongest strats that should work against it. i.e. MC (king of 2 base all ins) doing a 2 base 7 gate +2 blink stalker push.

Basically, if you go FFE to robo/gateway units, he will get roaches and you will lose.

He is beatable, just not with that strat. Watch the MC vs Stephano BO9 IPL fight club series. MC shows how you can still beat a zerg at that level, just not if you try and go up against his roach army. You have to use other timings/unit comps/strats other than FFE -> gateway + robo.

Cooking it sous vide isn't using a grill. It's basically placing the meat in a sealed bag and putting it in a water bath held at a very specific temperature. This is a good way to try the method without the fancy equipment.

Christian Teens Say Gay Activist Made Girls Cry by [deleted]in Christianity

[–]Phaz 0 points1 point ago

If I am ignorant on the issue please correct me. Show me the news articles of and epidemic of Christian kids being bullied to the point of suicide. Or just them being bullied for being Christian in general. Or being bullied because other kids perceive them to be Christian.

His whole speech was that there are several things in the bible that we (as society) have moved past. Slavery, shellfish, etc. He believes what the bible says about homosexuality should be lumped in that same group. I don't think that is offensive (though it can be said in an offensive way). Of course many of these kids walked out or started walking out before even hearing the point he was trying to make.

Christian Teens Say Gay Activist Made Girls Cry by [deleted]in Christianity

[–]Phaz 0 points1 point ago*

No no no. Look at it in context. (Which is the intellectual and fair way to look at it)

"We can learn to ignore the bullshit in the bible about gay people. The same way we have learned to ignore the bullshit in the bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation. We ignore the bullshit in the bible about all sorts of things." You are taking it out of context, much like it seems these kids were. What is offensive or wrong or ignorant about that statement?

That is far different than saying "The bible is bullshit". He is saying there are lots of things in the bible he considers bullshit that we (as society) ignore. I'd imagine many Christians would agree with him on many of those specific issues.

The fact is, he did not call the bible bullshit. He called some of the things the bible says about homosexuality and other things bullshit. There is a HUGE difference there.

I do not think what he actually said there was offensive. You might be offended at the use of the word "Bullshit" but as I said, he likely said many worse things earlier on. If language was offensive people would of walked out before that point. He said things that are true. Most people do ignore what the bible says about all those things. We have moved past all those things.

I also am not justifying what he said towards the people who walked out.

My whole point is trying to understand why people walked out in the first place. That's it. Because I don't feel like walking out really made much sense. They were basically reacting to things they expected him to say or thought he might stay or something along those lines rather than what he actually said. To me that comes off as a little silly and immature. It's pretty much impossible to have any kind of conversation on the topic when people react that way.

My whole point is that we should be having an honest and fair conversation about what people are actually saying, not what we think they are saying, or what they could say, what they actually say. In order to do that, we must listen to what eachother say, and really make an effort to understand it without making assumptions. Is that too much to ask for?

im not going to keep going on at this thread.

Evidently it is.

Again, you make this claim. This is the part I don't get. Please point out what he said that was insulting to their beliefs.

Christian Teens Say Gay Activist Made Girls Cry by [deleted]in Christianity

[–]Phaz 1 point2 points ago

This wasn't a mandatory school lecture. It was at a journalism conference. Something I'd imagine is completely voluntary. He does have a history insulting Christianity. If you felt that badly about it you could of chosen not to attend at all.

You could always send him an email afterwards, but moreso, the points he makes are made very often. If you understand where those people are coming from, you could have a discussion with them and correct them in areas they are wrong or misguided.

These kids assumed he would start an "insult session." What did he say that was insulting? This was a journalist convention. What kind of journalist would just assume what a speaker was going to say and then not actually attend the speech to see what the person actually says?

Yes, Savage does have a history of being disrespectful towards Christians. But still, no one has been able to point out exactly what he said that was insulting.

Finally, the use of "children" here is fairly loose. It looks like there were some teenagers there, but even the guy quoted in the article is listed as being 18. Another was quoted as being 17.

If he was up on stage saying "Christians are dumb and stupid" etc, I would understand Christians wanting to walk out. However, I don't think he said anything like that.

Certainly nothing that I think could of been considered offensive (until after people had already walked out).

I cook breasts to 140F. They are amazing. It's right on the border of where they turn pink to white. If you haven't had white meat at that temp you are seriously missing out. Even without a brine or any seasoning it is delicious.

I cook them sous vide at that temp, so I hold them at that temp for ~1 hour or so, which pasturizes them and makes them just as safe as someone cooking them in the oven to 165.

Christian Teens Say Gay Activist Made Girls Cry by [deleted]in Christianity

[–]Phaz 0 points1 point ago*

Did you watch the video?

First, he says that people justify being anti-gay by using the bible. That is a fact. People start walking out right there.

Next, he says that there are things in the bible about homosexuality he considers to be "bullshit" He doesn't say the bible is bullshit.

Next, he mentions several things the bible that many Christians "ignore" today, that he finds to be 'bullshit'. Things that I'd imagine many Christians agree with him on. I think almost anyone here would agree with him on those things (except maybe masturbation and virginity, but even then you'd find a difference of opinions among Christians)

Next, he talks about how the bible was used to support slavery, and it was wrong on that issue.

Next, he brings up other issues which the bible got "wrong" that people do not currently follow.

He does this because next, he ties that in to his point that his concern is kids killing themselves because of bullying, which is in part caused by the anti-gay views in the bible.

Here, he now makes the 'pansy' statement, which could be seen as offensive, but everyone who might of been offended by that had already walked out by then.

Finally, he elaborates more on his position by saying there are lots of things in the bible that people today don't adhere to, and in his opinion this is one that people need to move past as well, because it's doing harm to real people.

Which of those things are insulting to the bible or Christians? Pointing out things in the bible is insulting? Using history to show things that were justified using the bible is insulting?

I honestly don't see what he said that was offensive or insulting that would of caused people to walk out (The most offensive thing he said was after people had already walked out).

It could be because of the vulgarity and the use of the word "bullshit" but I find that unlikely since he is known for that kind of language. I'd be shocked if this was the first time he used it in this speech, and I doubt anyone walked out when he used it before that.

I might be wrong, but I get the impression that these kids walked out just because they wanted to close their ears and didn't want to hear anything that goes against what they believe, yet he didn't say anything that was really wrong (and most left before even hearing his points to see if he had said anything inaccurate).

It's just odd to me that people choose to walk out on this. It was kind of the opposite of what I would expect someone to do. If someone said something I consider to be wrong about one of my beliefs I wouldn't just refuse to hear their point. I would sit and listen to their criticisms and try to fully understand where they are coming from, what they are saying, and then if I know of areas in which they are ignorant or wrong, correct them on such.

TIL that Kobe beef sold in the United States is fake by pussEroxin todayilearned

[–]Phaz 7 points8 points ago*

Am I the only one more concerned with a products taste than it's name or where it comes from? I don't care if whiskey comes from Scotland or not. Do they make good Whiskey? Yup. Do they make some lesser quality whiskey? Yup. Can you find good whiskey outside Scotland? Yup.

Some products depend a lot on the local climate and what not, but it's certainly not outside the realm to produce a similar product elsewhere. I frankly don't care where they make it, as long as the final product is good quality.

The cows they make "wagyu" or "domestic kobe" or whatever from in the US might not be fully the same quality as what comes from Japan, but as other people have pointed out, it's not as expensive as "real" stuff either. It's also certainly noticeably different than "regular" beef here. Or at least is to me. I've bought it, made it and enjoyed it.

Even when they aren't the same it's fine with me. Domestic prosciutto is different than imported prosciutto, but both are delicious and both have their place in my kitchen.

[–]Phaz -5 points-4 points ago

There are different grades of Kobe beef. Really really high end stuff in Japan is likely better than most of what you find in the US, but I"m sure in the US you can find stuff that is comparable if you are willing to look/pay for it.

Christian Teens Say Gay Activist Made Girls Cry by [deleted]in Christianity

What beliefs exactly were they standing up against?

He was pointing out a lot of stuff in the bible that I would doubt a single person who walked out believes in or follows. That is offensive? I'm really kind of confused as to why people walked out.

Christian Teens Say Gay Activist Made Girls Cry by [deleted]in Christianity

[–]Phaz 0 points1 point ago

I think the "defending yourself" makes a lot of sense if you put the context in terms of what kind of projects Savage works on. Presumably, based on his "It Gets Better" project, I would say he was very likely bullied as a kid for being gay. That is likely what he is talking about when he says 'defending himself.' As a lot (though not all) of the anti-gay bullying stems from an anti-gay ideas in society, many of which come from the bible.

He is pushing back against it. He's allowed to. As far as I know, there are no christian kids killing themselves because of the "war on Christmas." Christian kids are not bullied on a daily bases in highschools all across the nation. Gay kids are. Much of the anti-gay sentiment can have it's roots traced back to the bible, the same bible that says a lot of other stuff that people don't follow. As he says, he is merely pointing out that hypocrisy. Likely not just for himself, I doubt he get's bullied much anymore, but for gay kids everywhere who do.
