What are the best bars in NYC for Euro 2012? by Kevin0924in nyc

[–]PatFlynnEire 1 point2 points ago

I was in Mustang Harry's today and they had signs all over the place, saying they'll be showing every game; I know it will have a solid crowd for Ireland games.

One place that gets overlooked for sports is Rattle N Hum. It doesn't have as many TVs as the big sports places but also doesn't get as packed. I've watched many games there and always had a good view, and of course, loved the craft beer.

Tempest Bar is the place if you want cheap - $4 pints and order in pizza.

If you're further up in midtown, try Brickyard Gastropub or Beer Authority, which both show all European soccer games.

Best friend just dumped her douchenozzle of a boyfriend, taking her out tomorrow to cheer her up- need recommendations for new places- preferably ones that may have marines in them! by jackasaurusrexin nyc

You probably want a place in midtown West to find Fleet Weekers.

Here are reviews for three places in Midtown West that I frequent. They all have a nice, upscale crowd that skews male, terrific drinks, and are very likely to have a crowd of sailors:

Anyone been to /going to the Belmont Stakes? by WMills4in nyc

[–]PatFlynnEire 1 point2 points ago

I just posted this guide to the Belmont Stakes.

Some of the other comments likely come from a time before outside alcohol was banned on Belmont Stakes Day. There used to be large packs of young people with giant coolers, with predictable results. Now you have to buy beers from the food stands, and the rowdiness level is much lower. But yes, still be prepared for lines and crowds.

New job in NYC, can't commute back home (LI) during 5 hour break... where to go to hang out and kill some time? by jeep_thangsin nyc

Join New York Sports Club or another chain that has gyms all over the city, and go to the gym every day.

My friend and I will be working in NYC this summer. What is everyone's favorite/must see/must do thing/place/activity in the city? by MrJBearin nyc

Long Island's beaches are breath-taking. Long Beach is easily accessible via the Long Island Railroad.

Belmont Park is a beautiful race track, also accessible via the LIRR. In that vein, if you can somehow get up to Saratoga Springs when those races are being held, you won't ever forget it.

Roam in Central Park and The Cloisters.

Museum of Natural History.

McSorley's Old Ale House.

Don't ignore Brooklyn.

Rent bikes.

I think you will find this Web Guide pretty useful:

Are the NYPD something to be legitimately concerned about if moving to NYC? by scarletsalanderin nyc

[–]PatFlynnEire 2 points3 points ago

I am friends with about six dozen cops in NYC, Transit Authority, upstate, Long Island, FBI, ATF, et al. Here's the truth: they are all human beings. They get brutally criticized when they don't do enough, and also when they do too much. When crime rises, they are accused of not being present enough; when it plunges - as it has almost continuously for the past 10 years, to the point where NYC is the safest large city on earth - they are accused of over-reaching. They really just want to do their damn jobs, maintain order, and go home to their lives. The harder you make it for them to do that, the harder they make it for you.

I'm going to be married soon! Any advice from married Redditors? by neecho235in AskReddit

[–]PatFlynnEire 1 point2 points ago

Also - the wedding is a lot of fun, but don't get worked up about the details of it. As someone said to me before my wedding, there are only two things of consequence that happen that day: you show up and say yes, and your fiancee shows up and says yes. Everything else is just glitter.

Never take her for granted - every single day when you wake up, think "Today I need to make her glad she married me."

Hey r/nyc, I'm going to be moving to LA in a few months, and I was wondering if you guys had any suggestions as to through whom I should ship my stuff over? by Batatomic7in nyc

You don't say much about size & weight of boxes. If the boxes are under 70 lbs, consider US Postal Service Parcel Post:

Best NYC documentary? by chvzin nyc

THIS. It captured NYC in the 1970s better than any nonfiction piece ever could. Also good - Dog Day Afternoon and the original Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, as well as the TV Odd Couple.

PLEASE - for us and for your kids and grandkids - do whatever you have to do to get this put online in an album as crisply as they can be reproduced, with as much supporting detail as you can find. Reddit can help you figure out the detail.

Video proof a Chicago ABC station identified Metta World Peace as "Lakers Idiot" by x-9erin sports

[–]PatFlynnEire 0 points1 point ago

I think that Lakers Idiot should sue this bastard for comparing him to Metta World Peace. The Knicks have long been vilified for drafting a man who never showed up instead of Ron Artest. Recently it has become clear that they made the right move.

The US state of Texas is likely to have executed an innocent man due to careless handling of the case, a report by US law students claims. by Hansamanin news

[–]PatFlynnEire 0 points1 point ago

Here is all you need to know.

A man named Ernest Willis spent 18 years on death row. He was exonerated only because a prominent NYC law firm took an interest in the case and spent many years, and $1 million worth of billable time, to fight for his release.

According to this article, "after winning the death penalty for Mr. Willis, Mr. Johnson [the prosecutor] was jubilant. The verdict, he told The Odessa American, marked 'the first time a Pecos County jury has returned the death penalty since they hung people in the 1800s. We were very surprised even winning the trial. Our chances were about 10 percent even going into it. ... We didn't have any eyewitnesses. We didn't know what type of flammable material was used. It was all circumstantial'...."

So here you have a district attorney CROWING about the fact that a case in which he acknowledged he had very flimsy evidence resulted in the death penalty.

There are some horrible crimes for which the perpetrator is caught red-handed and make most of us scream out for the death penalty. As they teach in law school, hard facts make bad law. There are way too many cases where people have been sentenced to death on flimsy evidence for the death penalty to continue in this country.

My wife worked in 2 WFC and I worked at 101 Barclay. We had lunch on that plaza 3x a week in nice weather, and danced in Windows on the World many times. I also try not to think about 9/11 much (except to remember the love), but I do so appreciate seeing this photo of the plaza.

On this day 1977, a helicopter collapsed atop the Pan Am (MetLife) Building, sending its whirring blades slashing through 4 waiting passengers. One blade snapped off and fell to the street, killing a pedestrian at 43rd and Madison. by PatFlynnEirein nyc

One of the passengers who was killed was Michael Findlay, pioneer of sexploitation porn films in which women were often slashed and killed.
