TROPHY CASE

Nurse refuses student inhaler during asthma attack (teenager's mother finds him locked inside the nurse's office, unconscious on the floor.) by Sugar_Skullin politics

[–]PandemicSoul 0 points1 point ago

Eh, I don't know if that proves much. Don't get me wrong, the nurse in OP is an idiot and should lose her job. But generally, nurses are like prison guards -- they're mainly dealing with kids who want to get out of actually going to class, and who will lie, cheat, beg, and steal to avoid it. So when someone walks in to their office and says "I don't feel good," the natural reaction "Get the fuck back to class." I think their normal mode of operation is extreme skepticism.

That still doesn't change the fact that "homosexual sex" is sex between two people of the same sex, and "heterosexual sex" is sex between two people of opposite sexes.

The concept of 0 was "discovered" in many cultures around the world at various different times -- before that, having been just "space" on counting rods and so forth. But that doesn't mean 0 didn't exist before it was "discovered."

I'm not disputing the fact that homosexuality as an "identity" is a relatively recent construct, but that doesn't mean that before that point everyone was bisexual, right?

[–]PandemicSoul 0 points1 point ago

No, that's completely wrong.

Homosexuality is "a sexual attraction to (or sexual relations with) persons of the same sex." Homosexual sex is intercourse between two people of the same gender.

Homosexuals weren't created when we had a word to define them. Homosexual sex exists in many animal species, so we can assume that homosexuality has existed between members of the human race since before we were even considered human.

You're thinking of "the modern gay identity." That's a social construct.

That doesn't mean it didn't exist until the word was made up.

She's putting more work in, for sure, but she already comes across as aloof and out of touch in comparison to Brown

Just curious what you're basing that on? I've seen her in person and found her exactly the opposite.

Didn't he say somewhere in that rant that he's done most of his crazy stuff in the last 15 years? I've a had a Yahoo! account for longer than that.

I used to have a bread maker and after a half-dozen attempts that went poorly (loaves were usually too heavy or undercooked), we gave up. Plus, it's a huge pain in the ass.

Try using the rice cooker more -- it's so simple: dump in the rice and water and let it cook!

I care. I don't like it when people demean women and minorities, as he seems to enjoy doing.

I just mean that there are people who are going to commit suicide no matter what you do -- watch them closely, help them, put them on pills, in the end they find a way. I assume that's a genetics thing...

I think there's a couple larger concerns than just "it doesn't work." I mean, at the very least, the "It Gets Better" campaign was successful in raising the profile of this issue again (not the first time it's been a media moment). That's a good thing.

Second, one person who commits suicide, but was also inspired by this stuff, does not mean it doesn't work. Let's not forget that suicide is a propensity-type activity. Some people would not commit suicide no matter what happened to them. Other people are "destined" to commit suicide by their genes. Others are susceptible to suicide suggestion and, if triggered in the wrong way, will then end up at least attempting suicide. So if we can push people in that third group away from suicide, that's really important, right?

That doesn't mean we shouldn't try and stop the people in the second group from committing suicide or that "It Gets Better" doesn't work. It just means it doesn't work for everyone, but that many others might find it critical to understanding that there are other solutions.

If you are going to rent out your home, you MUST MUST MUST:

  1. have a bullet-proof CONTRACT
  2. ask for Social Security Numbers
  3. do a background and credit check
  4. ask for deposits
  5. get references

I had a friend who rented out her condo without a contract, and the people stopped paying her a few months into their lease. Once folks are in, it's a VERY long, legal process to get them out via eviction -- not just like "Oh hai, not paying? GTFO!" She ended up going through a 3 month eviction process with those people, and all the while they're living in her house and not paying a dime, screwing up the carpets, etc.

Then the idiot turned around and rented with a contract to new tenants but did NOT get their social security numbers, alternate contact info, or references, and THOSE folks just up and left one day, cleaned out all their stuff, and disappeared. So because she had no way of tracking them down (and hadn't asked for a security deposit because she was desperate to get people into the condo after the last fiasco), she was SOL for the rent they hadn't paid.

Moral of the story: do your due diligence and ensure that you're covering all your bases. Renting out your home is a tricky business that can have some very serious ramifications for you. Do some research about best practices for landlording, and good luck!

If management of this school if focused on providing a safe and welcoming environment for LGBT youth, then I doubt they're going to have a particular problem with bullying and bigotry, right?

Did Congress Really Not Pay Attention To What Happened With SOPA? CISPA Ignorance Is Astounding by nomdewebin technology

[–]PandemicSoul 2 points3 points ago

I'd argue that it's not lobbying/lobbyists that is the problem, it's simply money in politics. If you flew to DC, knocked on your Representative's office door, and talked to him about how SOPA sucked, YOU'RE A LOBBYIST. Lobbying is simply the act of trying to educate Representatives about issues.

The core issue is the fact that legislators are beholden to raise money for their campaigns from large donors. Politicians spend 80% of their time raising money to campaign, which makes them beholden to people who have money. Public financing of elections and stopping politicians from taking any money at all from special interests would radically transform politics and effectively drain the swamp.
