TROPHY CASE

Congress Won't Let The Navy Purchase Biofuel For The Great Green Fleet by maxxusflamusin politics

You don't understand, all of those things will still happen if we make ethanol. Making more corn-based ethanol increases our demand for foreign oil, it doesn't decrease it.

Biofuels do less than nothing to make us energy independent. For every one joule we get from corn-based ethanol, it actually takes more than one joule of gasoline to produce that ethanol, if you include fertilizers, transportation, and processing. There is literally no advantage to it.

My friends decided to warm up their new outdoor pool. by S_Eltronin WTF

Even more work and higher efficiency: Build the fire in a stove (add an afterburner for extra fun,) and pump the exhaust through copper tubes that run through the pool.

The colder the exhaust is, the more joules are going towards heating.

Some Amish men are in court for refusing to install smoke detectors in their homes: "I use this," he said pointing at his nose, "or him," and his finger pointed upwards. "I don't need a devil on the wall to tell me if my house is burning." by mepperin politics

[–]Pandaemonium 0 points1 point ago

Not at all - the reason smoke detectors are mandatory is because if your house lights on fire, it can very often spread to your neighbors' homes, causing death, including of those outside your family.

The difference with the murder example is mainly whether those deaths are caused by negligence or by malice.

My example holds: if it's an exercise of your religion to murder adulteresses, should that surely be protected?

The way the Supreme Court has interpreted it is something like "Free Exercise Clause requires accommodation of religious conduct except where a state could show a compelling interest and no less burdensome means to achieve that end."

In this case, the "compelling interest" is to stop deaths by burning, and there seems to be no reliable means towards that that's less burdensome than a smoke detector.

When a man is that badass, treating him as less is an insult.

Cloak of invisibility: Engineers use plasmonics to create an invisible photodetector by OldOhioPlayerin science

Calling this "invisible" seems like a stretch - the material is absorbing light and will appear darker than its surroundings, although it may be transparent and non-reflective.

The other great place for live music is a bar called Stella Blues. Doesn't have the big acts like Toad's, but has great live local music and often without a cover charge.

Freedom of religion means the government can't make laws targeting a certain religion, but it certainly does not mean that you can claim religious exemption from obeying the law.

As an extreme example, the Bible mandates that fornicators and adulteresses be stoned to death. If you murder a woman because she had sex, you can't say "You can't arrest me because I was only following my religion."

As for smoke detectors, you could actually envision a scenario in which houses are built next to each other, and refusing to install a smoke detector actually does put your neighbors at mortal risk. In this case, if the neighbors want you to install a smoke detector, there's nothing wrong with the government forcing you to. However if your neighbors share your religious convictions and are willing to accept the risk of their house burning down, then it's a lose-lose for the government to push the issue.

Miya's is my top choice for a must-do. It will change how you think of sushi forever. (best deal is their late-night special on Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:30 pm until closing, which is 5 different rolls (chef's choice) for $5, and 40% off pitchers.)
