Fox News Viewers Less Informed Than People Who Watch NO News - Farleigh Dickinson University just released the results of a nationwide study they recently did polling how informed the American population is on foreign and domestic affairs. by undercurrentsin Freethought

Interesting, although this doesn't necessarily show that Fox News makes you less informed. It could also be that the demographic that watches Fox News is less informed to begin with.

I've only been to Nine-Ten, Hane and Sushi Ota, but I think they all deserve to be on there. Actually, it's kind of a shame that both of the latter two are listed since they're almost identical (same owners). Would have been nice to save that spot for a distinct place.

We may not get the classics back in the lineup, but two new anime, Deadman Wonderland and Casshern Sins, are premiering this Saturday.

Eh, I think it's perfectly consistent to say that people are discriminated against for some things but not others. Being cis-gendered has its advantages, and being a woman has its disadvantages (all depending on the situation, of course). I don't think the SRSers would argue that one advantage somehow causes another to stop existing.

I think you mean transgendered women. But yeah, it is hard to remember exactly what forms of bigotry cause outrage and which are just scoffed at.

Haha, from the looks of it, that may well be where he's getting his info from. Thanks for the link.

Deadman Wonderland and Casshern Sins confirmed for new Toonami? (Click Sat, May 26 near the top) by nubmonkin anime

The head of my local anime club (Cal Animage Beta at UCSD) apparently has some connection within Cartoon Network. Here's what he posted on our Facebook group:

So, some Toonami keynotes.

  • Deadman Wonderland and Casshern Sins are premiering this Saturday at 12:30am and 1am. This will be the debut of Deadman Wonderland's dub, as the home video release is not available to order/pre-order as of yet.

  • Naruto, Dragon Ball Z and etc. from the old lineup won't be reappearing (for now). The licenses either cost too much or are being aired by competitors (Disney XD has been sitting on Naruto Shippuden and Nicktoons has Dragon Ball Z Kai).

  • Steven Blum will be returning to voice TOM, who will be receiving a hi-res update of his 3.0 form. Sara will not be returning yet, due to costs. Peter Cullen will also not be returning due to busy scheduling.

  • Promo bumps and reviews will be attempted every week.

  • The block does not have a whole lot of funding from Cartoon Network. In order to get more shows, it needs to be a ratings success.

The worst part is that you never know exactly when the next word is coming. You could be in the middle of a wedding procession and she could burst out with "Mortified!"

Conspiratards are mostly harmless - except when they're preaching anti-vaccine bullshit, and endangering innocents. These people terrify me. by Graped_in_the_mouthin conspiratard

[–]OtherSideReflections 1 point2 points ago

To be fair, he was saying that conspiracy theorists are usually financially dependent, not that financially dependent people are usually conspiracy theorists. Not that I necessarily agree with that either, but there's a huge difference. But you're right that we should be careful about making that distinction clear.

How'd I do, /skeptic ? by MrWeinerin skeptic

[–]OtherSideReflections 7 points8 points ago

Hmm, let's see. Joe Rogan's arguments:

  • Nuclear waste lasts 100,000 years.
  • Calling anti-nuclear people "pro-coal" is disingenuous.

Zach Weiner's arguments:

  • We'll be able to reprocess nuclear waste within 1,000 years.
  • Coal is currently the only viable large-scale alternative to nuclear.
  • Far more deaths per watt happen from coal than from nuclear.
  • Coal is a major contributor to global warming.

Looks to me like Zach won by a good country mile. And all while being consistently polite, compared to Rogan who generally came off as a dick.

I'm genuinely curious; what mainstream news outlets are publicizing AMAs?

This is jv1967's only post, and the account was created about ten minutes before this AMA. So yes, it is "funny" that jv1967 should ask that question...

To Religious people. Had you not been indoctrinated by your parents since birth, do you think you would still believe in God(s)? Or do you think you be a different person due to your lack of faith? by Macanarin DebateReligion

[–]OtherSideReflections 0 points1 point ago*

Haha, in a way you're right. Rote memorization is used far too often in school, especially early on. And that is a form of indoctrination, although in contrast to religion, the answers are evidence-based and widely agreed upon by experts in each field.

Ideally, though, the methods of math and the motivations of history are taught, and not just the raw facts. For example, you can learn that 5 times 3 is 15 without really knowing what that means, but a good teacher will also present three groups of five apples and then count them all up to show that there are fifteen apples altogether.

[–]OtherSideReflections 3 points4 points ago

To indoctrinate someone is to teach them accept a set of truth claims uncritically. Language and nationality have no truth component, while math and history are based on well-accepted, reliable truth-finding methods, and students are encouraged to ask questions about how and why they work.

While not every religious person is raised via indoctrination, religious doctrines are often portrayed as obvious truths, accepted by all but the ignorant and obstinate. And when they ask questions that undermine the integrity of those doctrines, they are told that God's ways are beyond our understanding and just have to be accepted on faith.

[–]OtherSideReflections 12 points13 points ago

It's even worse than that, though. At least the right to marry someone of your own race is useful. To a gay person, the right to straight marriage is pretty much worthless. (Unless they're trying to pass as straight, but that in itself is indicative of a whole slew of societal problems.)

"Ringworld" has the words "ring" and "world" in it. Based on that alone, I would assume that the book has something to do with a ring-shaped world and the zany adventures that take place therein.

But I'm not necessarily saying a title has to be descriptive. I think it should either be descriptive, or highly intriguing, or both. Of course the latter will be very subjective, but to me OP's title just sounds generically arcane.
