My new Locke brogues - do the contrasting socks look good? by zebulonthegreatin malefashionadvice

Also, red and green has unavoidable Christmas connotations, although I guess this is a paler red so they're not as strong.

Soy was one of my top choices as well. I was also thinking maybe black beans.

It annoys me that Ender's Game can no longer be discussed on the internet without bringing up Card's political views. I just like good books and don't care what opinions their authors hold, so this is my reaction to the whole topic.

When standing, correct? The reason for my confusion is that they definitely hover above my shoes when I sit down, but they look fine to me when I'm standing up.

The ends of my jean legs rest slightly above the soles of my heels when standing (no stacking), but come up somewhere between 1-2 inches above the tops of my shoes when sitting. Are they too short?

Except for the littering part, this sounds like an awesome idea if you own a pickup. You can probably pick up an old sofa for $50 or so from Goodwill, split the cost, carry it out there and have a comfy beach day.

The best advice i ever received about marriage was, "Don't Forget to date your wife!", Reddit, what is the best advice you have received for a relationship or marriage? by ProductiveVeteranin AskReddit

[–]OremLK 2 points3 points ago

Thank you. This is one thing people on Reddit sometimes don't seem to understand, and it needs to be said more often. The solution to every problem in marriage isn't "lawyer up, hit the gym". Maybe that's good advice for infidelity or severe breaches of trust, but if you just don't feel happy right now for X reason? Work at it! That's what commitment is about.

Heck, that even applies to serious relationships. Now, I'm not saying stay in a relationship which is just plain awful and destructive, but on the other hand, I see a lot of people who only seem to find the flaws of all their relationships, and not the strengths.

Newsflash, Ted Mosby: If you're having that hard of a time and it's taking you that long to find someone to marry, maybe the problem is you.

I've been thinking and realize that, in the spirit of those lost, Joss takes the steadfast character that you grow to love and kills them. So I've decided to hold a poll for those in the know- pick your show and who Joss Whedon would kill. by cubegleemerin whedon

[–]OremLK 3 points4 points ago

I was going to do Farscape, but on second though, Farscape is already pretty Whedony. Good characters going evil, wreaking emotional havoc, evil characters becoming ambiguous or good, main characters dying, coming back to life--or not, sometimes--relationships getting crushed and repaired--or not, sometimes... on the list goes.

tl;dr Just watch Farscape if you like Whedon-type shows.

Stay out of big, cheap commuter subdivisions with lots of new/recent construction. These low end suburbs in the middle of nowhere are terrible values--people are fleeing them or getting foreclosed upon in droves and moving into a more urbanized type of living.

Go for a settled area with valuable property, even if you get less house for your money. The kinds of areas where, if you live in them a long time, they're not likely to change much because they've already been the way they are now for decades. Or if you want to sell, the property itself drives the value of your home up, rather than the value of the house.

Always keep in mind, we have too many houses in this country, but not enough land to go around in true urban or small town-style communities.

For instance: My wife and I could have moved into a recent 1,600 sq ft house with all the modern amenities for about $100k with the way the market is right now. But we sniffed out the way the wind was blowing and instead just bought a 1945 house in the heart of Tomball with 1,100 square feet--and couldn't be happier with our decision. Even if you tore down the house entirely the property would still have a lot of value. And it's a well-established area where nobody's getting foreclosed upon and houses are rarely sold.

This is my experience as well. If it isn't an emergency which can cause big additional damage to the property (A/C in the summer, big plumbing leak) it never gets fixed.

Also, the price difference between owning a home and renting a home is massive right now. I would say rent is about twice as expensive. So, if your mortgage (plus tax, insurance) payments would be $750 a month, you'd be paying $1,500 to rent the same place. If you can't maintain the house for $750/month then you didn't do your homework before you bought it.

Drive up or take a taxi to The Woodlands Mall 15-20 minutes away. There's a lot of stuff in that immediate area and it's all walkable along and around the waterway if you don't mind the heat.

'Soccer' vs Football. So TRUE by Cowboy_Bebopin videos

[–]OremLK 2 points3 points ago

Purely on the topic of scoring frequency, it's a simple fact that there are more scoring plays on average in a baseball game than in a soccer game.

I have many other reasons for my preference, but do you really care what they are? I'm already getting downvoted for not sharing your opinion, so I don't feel like discussion is very welcome here.

He doesn't act like that in every movie though. See: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, The Truman Show, etc.

Baseball and American football both have that kind of scoring frequency. That's why they're my favorite sports. Basketball has too much scoring, which dilutes the impact of individual plays, and soccer has so little that I get bored.
