It'd be funnier if your entire name was a roman numeral.

Already been done; except it was a short story about an experiment surrounding a pre-pubescent androgynous kid.

It's officially three months. Again. And I feel... like I don't care about getting the chip again. by OddAdviceGiverin stopdrinking

It's a large group, and no sponsor. My first one disappeared during my first stint with sobriety; health issues. I haven't found anyone else yet.

That'd be a good thing. I always shoot for the day when I really crave it. I don't think of it as "oh I'm going to lose my chip!" I think of it as just not drinking for today.

I saw someone else do that (not at a year) when nobody else took a chip. I'd feel bad if I lost my 24 hour one; I use it as my "worry stone".

Question about Sync and preferences? I want some preferences not to sync, I need to be selective about it. by OddAdviceGiverin firefox

[–]OddAdviceGiver[S] 0 points1 point ago

Wow thank you, I never would've found that. Oh that will save me some time as I hop networks. A big thanks; is there a way to um, hm. will that populate going around the rest of the machines, "sync" the preferences on which preferences to sync so to speak... or do I need to tweak each sync'd machine, or start all over again? I have more than a few I log into.

For the last couple of nights, I reduced my drinking from 4 pints and half a bottle of Vodka to 1 pint and half a bottle of red wine. Feel much much better. by doublejay1999in stopdrinking

[–]OddAdviceGiver 0 points1 point ago

That's what I did to taper off. Eventually I got down to one beer a night for my last 6 pack, every other night, then the final night 2.

If I would've quit at my peak, cold turkey, I could've wound up in the hospital.

At AA open discussion meetings, do you prefer "war stories" or stories about life in recovery? by locuesterin stopdrinking

[–]OddAdviceGiver 3 points4 points ago

Most of the war stories, if they are really good, can't really be told because everyone forgot about them.

So I like the life in recovery.

Managed My First Night Sober by xalkaiin stopdrinking

You should stop drinking for more than a day. It takes a long time for your brain to adjust to the lack of the drug, and yes, alcohol is a drug. It's not necessarily a poison (that's an opinion) but your body adapts physiologically to alcohol, and in the process it changes how your brain, how your CNS functions specifically, and how your actual thoughts and demeanor function.

By going without it for one day means you stayed dry for a day.

It depends on how long, how your brain chemistry is wired, but try to shoot for longer next time, like 5-6 days. If you start to get the shakes then by all means see a doctor, or just ween slowly. But shoot for longer.

If by 5 days you're having problems physically and mentally, you are probably "hooked" on alcohol. Alcohol does some amazing things inside your brain. I don't think I've ever studied anything so much and wound up getting into how the brain functions with different chemicals and ions and atoms and molecules as I did once I realized my body was dependent on it, and since the body is the temple for the soul, my body was pretty pissed at me not feeding it more alcohol.

I realized that today it's been 3 whole months for me. This isn't my first stint. I can remain dry, but there's a difference between being dry and being sober.

What you did last night wasn't sober. It was a dry night. I'm not bursting your bubble, but try, if you ever decide, to go for a full week.

Then re-think your strategy based on your own observations about yourself.

I'm just ASCII on your screen and my words probably mean nothing to you, but why not give it a try? Then again, maybe your body acts differently with alcohol. It's indeed possible, but give it a shot, you have support everywhere if you do wind up realizing you have a problem and want to stop completely for a while... just to see how it goes.

Most people don't know they are "hooked" until they try to stop. And notice I said try. Nobody's perfect, but it can be an eye-opener for some.

Protecting a Laptop from Simple and Sophisticated Attacks by mickeycin linux

[–]OddAdviceGiver 0 points1 point ago

Can't you just simply lock down the bios on that model? I mean if someone's going to steal it, they are either: looking for parts (and by the time they unlock the bios they'd need to resolder some parts, and that's SMT rework at that point) or looking for the quick sale. I may be mistaken about that model, but even older Dells allow encryption on the HD level from the bios, and you can do even more from the OS.

You can encrypt the HD using whatever tools you want, or do what I do and just have a ghosted OS that boots for enough to either set up the wireless, or into a tethered mode for my cell, regardless it winds up to VPN into an rdesktop session.

(I use old laptops)

If you leave a nice enough note under the battery they may return it, especially if there's a reward. It's happened to me, in Austin. Someone smash-and-grabbed my backpack out of the back of a friend's car. I gave the guy $20 for his time.

So does IE, has for some time now. It's called "InPrivate browsing".

Doesn't matter, all ISP's use transparent proxy servers anyway.

Google Chrome's blog about exploits found and fixed during Pwnium by sidcool1234in programming

[–]OddAdviceGiver -40 points-39 points ago

So, we won’t be posting that part until we’re comfortable that all affected products have had an adequate time to push fixes to their users.

So tired of this. Basically anyone's fucked unless they use Chrome:

While these issues are already fixed in Chrome

This is what butraq was for in the first place. Oh I know, it sounds like I'm griping, but I am. Since google is being so sly about it, "use our browser and these exploits won't work, wink wink" I figured they deserved a slapshot up their arse for not saying what bugs and what products are also f'd up so the general public can at least know about it.

This isn't exactly the zeroth day.

Messing up? If we didn't make mistakes, we'd never learn from them. At least you are stronger now, well armed for making a more solid stance.
