Mae Jemison interviewed about DARPA's 100-Year Starship project... by therealoliverdaviesin space

I completely agree! With our current technology, we could easily explore the solar system. It’s very sad that endeavors like this are subject to the whim of politicians.

I really hope these guys can develop a plan and stick to it. With things like fusion propulsion possibly coming down the line, this dream is becoming more of a reality. I think we need to explore a decent amount of our Solar System first, but during that process we should be building systems that are capable of long duration flights.

There is this on wikipedia. I guess gamma rays and such are powerful enough to ionize the smaller particles. Still, I think you are correct. Most of the regolith wouldn’t be affected by the magnetic field.

I'm hoping they discover a thicker atmosphere then theorized. With all that ice and a somewhat stable atmoshpere, it would make it a great canidate for colonization.

How does this work? Would you scoop the regolith into a container, pressurize the container, then open up a valve leading from the pressurized container to a non-pressurized container?

The aircraft would have a decent field of view at altitude. Also I'm sure it would be circling and could compare any changes from frame to frame.

Having large quantities of these metals will revolutionize not only computers, but energy production. Fuel cells will become cheap to produce and I'm sure other energy technologies will benefit from it as well. The trickle down effect of an endevour like this will be enormous.

This is a great idea! The FLIR Cameras are pretty heavy, but it wouldn’t be too hard to build a bigger styrofoam plane.

I have many friends who are down to talk about the theoretical side of thins. Big Bang, Dark matter/energy, etc., but they don’t seem to care much about space exploration. I have maybe one to two friends that will discuss it with me. Besides that, the others are kind enough to listen to me rant.
