Isn't it remarkable that Weird Al's career has outlasted that of so many major bands' and artists'? by SoftPoreCornin self

I've argued that white and nerdy is brilliant because it's not just a parody on the music, but a parody on the thematic message.

Last summer the GOP held our economy hostage to get a debt deal that they refuse to honor. Now they're threatening to do the same thing right as our recovery becomes shaky. When does this treachery get called out? by wang-bangerin politics

[–]NauticalInsanity 2 points3 points ago

I know you're trying to be funny, but my issue with r/politics is that it's a giant circlejerk. Which is fun, but not always informative. It's good that a lot of us agree, but we need good thoughtful posts and less "those guys are a bunch of fuckers." We shouldn't fall into the same trap as the parent poster and believe the world is a simple enough place to describe in a few short sentences.

Your post is incaccurate in many ways while showing a surprising economy with words. Commendable.

  1. Europe is not bankrupt. Peripheral countries are struggling with their debt due to being tied to the euro, but the continent on the whole is not.

  2. You make the assumption that Europe's situation is equivalent to the US. The answer: when you invest the typical choice is risky stocks, or safer bonds with smaller returns. Those, bonds? US treasury bonds, i.e. the safe investment is still widely considered to be the US and it's unlikely to change for along time.

  3. You assume that without republican stonewalling, US debt would skyrocket without bound. Almost all democrats run on a platform of increasing revenue streams rather than austerity measures. Most economists agree with this approach because social programs increase spending capacity of the population and austerity measures shrink the customer base. In fact a lot of them advocate massive social investment at the expense of increased debt, because that causes more spending, requiring companies to increase capacity to match demand, growing the economy during a recession. During economic good times, it is a lot easier to manage the debt as evidenced by the pay-go program in the 90's that had the US goverment running a surplus and on track to pay off the national debt.

PvP -- 4 gate proxy or 3 gate 1 robo? by kintherin starcraft_strategy

[–]NauticalInsanity 2 points3 points ago

One thing a lot of inexperienced players forget when holding off 4-gates with sentries is that you don't always want to split their army in half. If there's a low-ground pylon building or done you never want to let more than a single zealot up the ramp and that's only if you have enough forces to stop the 4 zealots that will be warped in on the high ground.

If they're still attacking when you have 2 immortals, then you can start splitting their army up. Until then you're better off keeping them out and shooting down low ground pylons as they come up.

Control Group Question by PandamoniumSCin starcraft_strategy

[–]NauticalInsanity 0 points1 point ago

I prefer to split my production hotkeys up so that 1 is all my nexi. Then 2-5 is my army (yes zerg players, some tosses use more than one hotkey for their army), 6 is robo and 7 is stargate. I'll shift robo and stargate over one so I can free up 6 for warp prism play.

I found that for me, 1 was a bad army hotkey because reaching left with my ring finger from w was more error prone than keeping my main army on 2.

Also for those who are curious

2 is all units and colossi

3 is all units and colossi

4 is all units and colossi

5 is all units and colossi :D

Below the scale of an atom, I would say that you could concievably define "volume" as the minimum space before the pauli exclusion principle comes into significant effect.

Sexxit, thoughts on small boobies? by tightywhitey24in sex

Boobs are like ears on a puppy. Some people like small perky ones, others like big floppy ones. But at the end of the day the puppy is still adorable.

What are the general advantages and disadvantages of each race? by M15CH13Fin starcraft_strategy

Almost spot on except for the last bit about protoss armor upgrades. Marine DPS is fearsome to protosses, so armor upgrades are actually prioritized in PvT.

How the Christian Right's Homophobia Scares Away Religious Young People: The Christian right is increasingly out of step with how Americans feel about gay rights. This issue might be the one that destroys them in the end. by davidreiss666in politics

[–]NauticalInsanity -1 points0 points ago

Not necessarily, no true scottsman is where the categorization is redefined as a tautology of the point that's trying to be made i.e. no scottsan can commit a murder because the definition of a scottsman is that they don't commit murder.

Whereas with christians, they are defined by the teachings of christ and violation of that puts them out of that category. Bigotry against homosexuals is argued to be against the teachings of christ therefore anti-homosexual views would exclude someone from a legitimate claim to be a christian.

Dad used to be a game dev, this has been kicking around the house for a long time. by Jidgetin gaming

[–]NauticalInsanity 33 points34 points ago

Even better than the music was the skybox design. The ridiculous scale of the Progenitor ruins was just awe-inspiring. The design made every mission feel different, even if it was just open space.

As for multiplayer, it could be surprisingly in-depth and it's a shame it's no longer supported. A friend and I would lan it up all the time. He'd always open frigates and I with strike craft, only to lose half my shit to well-placed EMPs and he would lose his to my mine fields.

ELI5: What happens at the ending of Mass Effect 3 that makes everybody hate it? by Henwheein explainlikeimfive

[–]NauticalInsanity 2 points3 points ago

I'm familiar with the Dark Energy plot that was foreshadowed in ME3. Some people say that it only looks good in comparison to what we got, but I beg to differ. It was heavily foreshadowed and sticks with the themes that the series established.

ELI5: What happens at the ending of Mass Effect 3 that makes everybody hate it? by Henwheein explainlikeimfive

[–]NauticalInsanity 30 points31 points ago

There are three things that really piss people off. I'll go in order of descending objctivity.

The first most obvious one is that the ending contains major logical plot holes. Characters appear and disappear from places with no indication of how they arrived or left or even why they do so. There are other issues that people claim to be plot holes related to the antagonist reaper's and character motivations for actions that seem nonsensical, but those are less concrete.

Second, the ending only adresses the conclusion of the reaper threat, and not the saving of the galaxy. These seem similar, but are in fact two very different things. Players built a strong connection with the characters and civilization in the mass effect universe. The ending truncates almost immediately after the reaper threat is neutralized. In the process of solving the reaper threat, all the mass relays, devices that facilitate FTL travel and connect the galactic civilization, are destroyed, stranding the massed galactic fleet in sol. In addition it's been shown prior that mass relays when destroyed release energy equivalent to a supernova. So not only does the ending not address the saving of the galaxy it at the very last minute throws it entirely into question. This is particularly frustrating because your decisions in the 3 ME games drastically shape and are informed by how a post-reaper galaxy would look. In essence the ending fails to address the true conflict of the series entirely.

Finally, the ending dishonors the themes of the mass effect series. Throughout the games, the writers have addressed ideas such as strength through unity, natural against written law, trust, and even the nature of life. The treatment of synthetic life in the series is beautiful as the once malicious robotic geth are slowly revealed to be sensitive, benevolent automotons. In contrast the ending presents the reaper's motivations: synthetic life cannot coexist with organic life, therefor, advanced organic civilizations must be eliminated before they desroy themselves. The reaper's position is simplistically luddite compared to the characterization and redemption of the geth. If the player was capable of objecting to it, that would be okay if a little strange. Instead the ending forces shepard and by extension the player to accept the reaper's premise against everything that has been established thus far. This to me is the most heartbreaking part of the ending because mass effect had done such a great treatment of classical sci-fi themes to that point, only to throw them in the bin at the very last minute.

Sky Terran TvP by MacroJacksonin starcraft_strategy

This push sounds deadly against a protoss who doesn't scout it, however by the 10 minute mark at the latest, most protosses will sneak an observer into your base and see the 4 starports with tech labs. The wrong response from protoss would be to build nothing but blink stalkers. The better response would be to drop stargates and a templar archives and begin phoenix-zealot production with about 3-5 high templar mixed in since they will know that there isn't any big scary bio-medivac push coming at the 10 minute mark.

Also, the 7:30 warpgate timing attack popularized by parting would be pretty scary for this build.

I don't get the appeal of the N7 Valiant by LCaiin MECoOp

[–]NauticalInsanity 0 points1 point ago

I should have been more clear. When dealing with a mob, you cryoblast the mook next to your target, then kill your target. That way you take down a target and debuff a whole mob. On boss enemies you just cryo blast and shoot and the whole team benefits. It's not as good as enegy drain, but that's an unfair standard.

I don't get the appeal of the N7 Valiant by LCaiin MECoOp

[–]NauticalInsanity 0 points1 point ago

Even while sniping cryo blast is awesome cc if you spec it for radius. I just cloak, fire off cryo blast and shoot three times with my valiant.

If you could have any race/class combination (existing races only) what would it be? by ssjtrunks51in MECoOp

I think asari sentinel would make a lot of sense from a lore perspective. Something like:

Shield Boost Incinerate Throw

Shredder Mod by tfitch2140in MECoOp

[–]NauticalInsanity 1 point2 points ago

Especially if you play a claymore infiltrator, you want the extended barrel. Your cloak and passive bonuses are calculated before the armor reduction so the barrel ends up providing a huge damage boost compared to the shredder.

ELI5: Why are Guys and Girls bike seats different? by dinosaurinthedarkin explainlikeimfive

[–]NauticalInsanity 1 point2 points ago

I don't know about the seats, but the difference in the top lengthwise bar is different because the lower bar on women's bicycles accomodates skirts and dresses, allowing women to ride "decently" in an age where pants were uncommon attire for women.

Carriers in PvP! by kengouin starcraft_strategy

[–]NauticalInsanity 0 points1 point ago

You can actually support about 1.5-2 stargates of carrier construction per base of gas mining because carriers take so long to build. I'd recommend starting upgrades and preparing tech before you drop all the stargates, however. It will make your carrier switch much smoother.

Carriers in PvP! by kengouin starcraft_strategy

[–]NauticalInsanity 2 points3 points ago

Brainstorming here:

What about postponing the tech switch? I like chargelot-archon-immortal as my midgame composition because it straight-up beats colossus-based armies on open ground when your opponent is on 2 bases. This usually keeps them penned into their base while I can take an earlier third. Around 150 supply is when the army power shifts and seems like a good time to add carriers.

Finally got Geth Infiltrator, now what? by c2yoshiin MECoOp

[–]NauticalInsanity 0 points1 point ago

I do something very similar. The only difference is that I max out networked AI for power damage, and hunter mode for power damage and recharge, cutting some fitness. I prefer the claymore with an extended barrel and smart choke to the GPS because I favor hit-scan. This gives me an 1800-damage proximity mine and a hugely-damage-boosted claymore.
