INCONVENIENT TRUTH: Your iPhone Was Built, In Part, By 13 Year-Olds Working 16 Hours A Day For 70 Cents An Hour by Woolewin technology

I currently work for 20 cents an hour, and it is enough to live on here.

While I don't agree with what's going on, I do agree with your comment.

What are some simple but stunning science experiments or demonstrations that you know of? I am teaching Science in a developing country and really want to spark the students' interest. by Ms_Christinein askscience

The concept might be amlittle advanced, but it could be a fin demonstration to get them asking questions. Thanks!

No playground, but I might be able to do that experiment with the swivel chair! It's not very spinny and kind of rusty though... I will see what I can do! Thank you!

I agree- I'm trying to relate as much as possible to their environment, but I also want to try to get some of the brighter students inspired so maybe they continue their education past 8th grade, and then maybe past high school! My biggest unit will be environmental science.

Hmm... Definitely one for outside. There's no fire prevention system in the school, and I'd rather not burn the school down!

Actually, with the first microscope I got sent there were some eggs in there! Will they comfortably fit in a wet mount slide? I have some flat slides but I need to get some with the depression so I can look at water drops. I think I will start that up as soon as I get back to my island!

Wow, I wish I had a way to keep a turntable spinning! I was gnu to do the experiment with the bean seeds pointed in different directions and they all grow up. Thanks for the idea!

Well, I'm not going to be doing cool demos all year long! But I want to do some things to get them interested.

I am doing a unit on electricity and solar power. They don't have any doctors, really, but I will be teaching about microorganisms and germs, and definitely try to teach some health in there too!

I will look into that book.

This is a great experiment to illustrate the scientific method! I spent a month just trying to teach the method and trying to teach them to ask questions, so I'm hoping to reintroduce it over and over as much as possible. Thank you very much for this idea! I think I might be able to get my hands on these materials.

On my list! I will use this when I talk about how the atoll is formed. I will be sure to give them a proper explanation of volcanoes though, because I don't want them to think there's baking soda and vinegar under the crust! Thanks!

Yes, absolutely! I am doing a whole unit on simple machines. To do a rube Goldberg machine is a great idea! My only problem will be coming up with materials they can use. There is no hardware store on my island, and very limited "household" supplies. I will see what I can do! Thanks!

Thanks for the idea! If I can get some apples and potatoes shipped out to my island I will try this!

Hmm, this looks simple enough to pull off! I wonder if I can do a lesson on perpetual motion with my 8th graders... I remember spending hours as a kid trying to come up with perpetual motion machines. It always involved marbles and magnets...

Thanks for the idea!

I wish I had access to liquid nitrogen... Sadly I do not even have a refrigerator! I'd make ice cream with cream and sugar in a container with salt and ice around it... But it's near impossible to get ice on my island. Thank you though! I will use this in the future.

Wow! These are some really great ideas! The cabbage tea/color changing demonstration has been suggested a few times, so I am definitey going to try to get my hands on some of the things you listed. I will hunt around for the methylene blue, but I'm not sure where to het straight fructose!

Thank you very much for your ideas!

Glad to know we're thinking on the same level! This one was suggested elsewhere and was on my list already to do! Thank you!

Well, we don't exactly have butchers... Families just catch whatever animal they are going to eat, kill it and chop it up, then eat it. There's really no sale of meat or anything like that on my island. That said, I have plans to dissect some fish!

Thank you for your ideas! I will use as many as I can.
