fair enough, just saying, sometimes "loud neighbors" means "mildly annoying but manageable" and sometimes it means "makes the neighborhood miserable and sleepless on a regular basis"

[–]MrCompletely 2 points3 points ago

have you ever had a neighbor like that?

it's a lot bigger problem, and more disruptive to the people who live nearby, than you might think. Some can ignore it, some can't.

Disclosure: I used to be this bad neighbor. Long ago. I blame the LSD.

MY CAR!!!!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!

I will have to express my rage and loss with 72 continuous hours of dubstep remixes of Norwegian death metal and/or New Age Pop-Country crossover tracks, whichever you would find the most annoying.

What percentage of the music you listen to is The Dead? by sparkster185in gratefuldead

[–]MrCompletely 5 points6 points ago

I go through phases. I'm generally listening to almost all just one kind of music: Dead/Jerry, bluegrass, jazz, funk/soul, whatever, for an extended period. Then I switch to something else exclusively for awhile.

Recently it's all Dead/JGB all the time, whenever I burn out I think it'll be mostly Miles Davis for awhile, box sets and live shows from 68-75. I feel a Miles phase coming.

Over the course of a year or so it's probably 40% GD and 10% JGB. Something like that

Preserving the Dead (and others): The Owsley Stanley Foundation, dedicated to preserving and sharing the experience of the psychedelic era through Bear’s Sonic Journals by digitalin gratefuldead

[–]MrCompletely 0 points1 point ago

This is a legit, professional thing, run by Owsley's son (who by all accounts is a great guy) and if you can donate to it, all the money will in fact be going to the tapes - the GD family history is full of shady deals and sketchy schemes so I looked into this a little and heard nothing but solid things from the people I trust.

it's rare that a statement this broad is always true, but this one pretty much is. she was an artist.

after asking around i believe this tape is a first generation copy off the betty reel master

[–]MrCompletely 2 points3 points ago

there's a fairly large list of shows that aren't in the vault in master-tape form. they were absconded with, given away or lost across the years. Cornell '77 is one of those.

Plus the fact that it's the most widely circulated show of all, and the free version sounds amazing - it's hard to think that it would really sell that well anyway right?

the songs range from Mostly Harmless to excellent IMO

Phineas and Ferb Is the Best Science Fiction on Television by MrSpitein scifi

[–]MrCompletely 4 points5 points ago

Only partly so.

Yes, it's sad that there's not more good SF on TV, which I immediately realize is the understatement of the day week month year decade some very large amount of time

But P&F is a remarkable show. I stumbled across an interview in Wired, of all things, which I very rarely read, with the creators, and they seemed awesome, and the description of their show seemed cool, so I put it on for my bright 7 year old...and it's a good thing he got hooked, cause I certainly did, and I'd feel silly watching it by myself.

I'd do it, but I'd feel silly.

I didn't know it, but I can't imagine how I could be less surprised. I assume apple is monetizing every aspect of everyone's interactions with all of their devices.

the new (back then) venue in Charlotte was the first one built with a booking facility and holding tank in the basement of the venue itself. It was basically a bust factory top to bottom.

Lotta sketchy shit went down in those lots. A friend of mine spent one afternoon up on the little ridge in between parking lots taking telephoto pix of undercover cops...

I just kept my head down in that town. I tended to roll pretty hard on tour in those days but I'm from the south and knew the deal with Charlotte.

Dark Star Fubar by Lazlo_Hollyfeldin gratefuldead

[–]MrCompletely 5 points6 points ago

Well they basically got tired of playing it in '74 and that's why they stopped playing it through the 70s, it just didn't fit their sound or interests, and they felt like they'd mined it out, so to speak...but the last few versions are all very good and creative, in a spacy way

Then they did it in the early 80s just once, and IMO it really is not very good or interesting, though I'm sure if I'd been at the show I would have felt differently. I don't recall them fucking it up, though. It just didn't really go anywhere.

After the Warlocks bustout in 89, Dark Stars were surprisingly rare for the next couple tours, but they were all at least ok and some of them are great. They played it a bit more in '91, and after that I have no idea.

yay you! a kind sister from the old school. You were one of the ones I looked up to when I started going to shows in '85, the ones who brought the love and did it right.

hopefully you know those Fillmore posters, if they exist, are worth $$$. I have a friend that is an expert, if you don't want to keep them and need help with valuation.

thanks in advance for the pix!

my first real run of shows was like that. I was still in HS and did a 5-show run through the south. Halloween in Columbia, SC was...well, it was a college town, so they thought they were ready, but it turns out...they were not really ready at all.

some southern towns would respond with anger and violence, though. had some sketchy cop interactions, particularly in VA. For example the Richmond shows right after Columbia were a nightmare of bad weather and aggressive policing. But not always. Roanoke was the opposite, for example...good times in Roanoke.

you can directly download audience recordings. SBDs are supposed to be streaming only, but there's a URL hack you can use:

substitute "download" for "details" in the URL and reload the page. All the files will show, but you can only actually download the vbr mp3s. Using a downloader plugin for your browser will make it a lot easier to grab them all.

[–]MrCompletely 0 points1 point ago

in reality no, but it was an ongoing gag on tour that if anyone from a local paper or TV news station interviewed you, you should give a name from a song...Jack Straw very common, August West etc...I never got hte opportunity but two of my friends did and I saw several such news stories over the years

just search for every version of Box of Rain you can find?

Lovelight, yeah

There was a bad recording of part of the set for years. More of it, in better quality, has recently surfaced. Here is an audio-only YT vid I uploaded of the latter half of the set - which is incredible, better than the Lovelight part.

If you'd like to DL it, there's a torrent on etree, I've been seeding it at night for the last few weeks...PM me if you need torrent pointers....or I can point you to the mp3s if you want those

It's the finest version of Attics of My Life I've ever heard by far, and that song is very special to me...the rest of it is great too, particularly notable for Jerry's amazing guitar/amp tone captured perfectly in a spectacular Bear recording...

that show was "Bear's going away party" (going to jail, that is)
