Slowly beating my addiction - Today was a milestone. by Corynne_in TwoXChromosomes

[–]MediocreDeity 0 points1 point ago

The scoring thing was more of a joke than anything, but essentially. I got randomly stubborn about small things (although I'm much better about it now), especially when my madre gets fairly pushy over them (which isn't often, and she's not terrible about it). Basically, I had/ occasionally have this bad habit about having to do things in my own time.

I was a chronic nail biter when I was young. My mom would put this bitter stuff on them to get me to stop. I bit them anyway, mostly out of stubbornness. I stopped eventually when she stopped bugging me about it. Anyway, mom :0, me: 1.

Scientist responsible for the "Pray the Gay away" movement formally apologizes and rescinds his actions by Negro_Napoleonin atheism

[–]MediocreDeity 0 points1 point ago

Robert Spitzer is a decent fellow. I say this because Spitzer actually led the effort to get homosexuality removed as a mental illness from the DSM-III in the 70's.

If anything, he's a prime example of why scientists should carefully construct their methodology, but he isn't a bad guy.

He actually went into the study in question thinking that he would help to disprove that homosexuality could be "cured". Unfortunately his methodology was terrible, and that particular bit of research by him has done a lot of harm.

However, I do think it's awesome that he's listening to the criticisms of his study, and formally recanting his findings (which really shouldn't be necessary, the peer review process made his study obsolete a long time ago). It's still decent of him though.

Is it still rape if she's drunk? by audreylynnein TwoXChromosomes

[–]MediocreDeity 0 points1 point ago

Ah, yes, I'm aware of those. I was referring to wish for a more stringent version (ie, they're definitely drunk and not just tipsy, but not necessarily blacked out or completely incoherent).

Is it still rape if she's drunk? by audreylynnein TwoXChromosomes

[–]MediocreDeity 0 points1 point ago

I love the capacity to consent rule, and wish we had it in the states when it applied to rape.

We have it in EMS. If you're drunk off your ass or mentally ill and telling us to let you die (you'd be surprised how often this happens) we're going to be able to legally treat you anyway, because you don't have the capacity to consent so we're going to treat you the same as if you were an unconscious patient in which we assume that if you were in the right state of mind you would want us to keep you alive.

So I've never understood why this capacity to consent (ie, you can't make a conscientious choice at the moment) rule doesn't apply to not being able to commit crimes against someone as well. If someone can't consent, you should just do what's best for them at the moment, which in the case of rape would be not doing it.

Reflections on the food diaries of a semi-recovered disordered eater. (possibly triggering) by rosesuchakladderin TwoXChromosomes

[–]MediocreDeity 3 points4 points ago

You're not alone.

I was eating about 700 calories a day in last two years of high school and my freshman year of college, along with doing martial arts three times a week and exercising in between. I stopped having my period my senior year of high school because I'd lost so much weight. I used to wear my heaviest clothes to the doctor so I wouldn't appear under my BMI. I was never clinically diagnosed with anorexia because of this.

I can still tell you how many calories I eat in a day because I memorized basically all the nutrition facts in the things I eat. It really doesn't go away.

Like you I've gone back up to a healthy weight (depression is to blame for part of this) and have perfectionist tendencies (which contributed a lot to my "Totally not an eating disorder" I think) . I've been having my period again for the past two years (which is great and sucks at the same time, because cramps. AGH!), and have a mildly healthier body image.

Although, my mom recently asked me if my pants size was a 4 or a 6 (my irl cake day is coming up), and it made me feel ridiculously fat. Again, it never really goes away.

I recently tore my MCL (definitely doing something awesome and not totally lame. Definitely). Anyway, I've been trying to get back into shape, but the doctor wasn't too specific on what I should avoid/could actually do. Are there any good exercises/ exercise routines that won't put too much strain on my knee?

Hey 2X, I donated my hair to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths by franticcatin TwoXChromosomes

[–]MediocreDeity 0 points1 point ago

Really? Did not know that. I donated to them in high school and suppose I just haven't done any research since. Thanks for letting me know! Definitely will be picking someone other than them.

Jane Svoboda the homophobic woman from Nebraska whose evidence to an anti-discrimination council went viral really does have mental health issues. Probably like a lot of homophobes. by pgukin lgbt

[–]MediocreDeity 0 points1 point ago

Mental health issues aren't indicative of bigotry, stupidity, or any of the like. It's cruel and insulting to those with mental health problems to insinuate it is.

Nor is it something to make light of or fun of. I doubt you would make fun of a handicapped person, so why are mentally ill people up for grabs?

Sorry if I was too harsh. I'm a neuroscience/psychology major and people insulting the mentally ill really pisses me off.

[–]MediocreDeity 2 points3 points ago

I'm growing mine out to donate to Locks of Love, but they have a ten inch requirement, so I might go with Pantene instead.

Also, you look really great with short hair! I bet your head feels super light now. Congrats on donating!

TwoX, can you help me convince my little sister to start reading? by stormy_the_rabbitin TwoXChromosomes

[–]MediocreDeity 0 points1 point ago

if it's a good book you'll get her hooked. I hated reading until I found Harry Potter at around her age.

I have a question that I'm so embarrassed about I can't even ask my doctor. by askingquestionsin TwoXChromosomes

[–]MediocreDeity 4 points5 points ago

If you've missed three or more periods then you have amenorrhea, a fairly common cause of which is PCOS, but which can also be caused by a hell of a lot of other things.

You need, really, really need to see a doctor. I cannot stress this enough. I had amenorrhea in high school (yay mild anorexia), and it can cause a decrease in bone density and infertility. More importantly than that, the underlying cause might not be your PCOS, but something worse.

If you're worried about embarrassment, you needn't be. Take it from an EMT who has heard much more embarrassing tales than lady parts smelling fishy and periods stopping. You won't even make a blip on your doctor's "What the hell is this?"-O-meter (and if you did she would just think it's awesome. Medical people are weird like that).

Seriously though, go see a doctor and stop asking for medical advice on the internet.

[–]MediocreDeity 0 points1 point ago

Favorite movie growing up. I made my sister watch it with me so often (she hates anything that is even mildly scary, which probably contributed to why I enjoyed it so much, aside from the whole dinosaurs thing. I'm a good sister).

Holy Rubber Jumpsuit! Batman really is gay! by milkkorein ainbow

[–]MediocreDeity 0 points1 point ago

I've never liked the homoerotic undertones/innuendo between Batman and Robin. Not because it's gay of course, but because it is so very very illegal for them to do anything, and implying it just makes things so icky.

UK Education Secretary orders investigation of Catholic Schools’ promoting petition to ban gay marriage to 11-year-old children by pgukin atheism

[–]MediocreDeity 0 points1 point ago

The wording on the title is just awful. It makes it sound like gay people are trying to marry 11 year olds, and the church wants to ban this.

Ah, as for the lack of showers, you could always pull a foul bachelorette frog and wash off in the sink!

How many of you ladies are virgins? Why? by Mewshimyoin TwoXChromosomes

Hey, I'm a 21 year old virgin also! I have... intimacy issues? Something like that I suppose. I'm not really one to let people get too close to me.

Transgender...is it ok if I write here..really need someone to talk to :( by everything_is_onein TwoXChromosomes

[–]MediocreDeity 0 points1 point ago

Of course you're welcome to write here, chica!

I have MDD too. It sucks. A lot.

Have you been to see a doctor about it? Because anti-depressants can be awesome once you find the right ones.

Also, there is an r/depression if you need to talk/want advice/etc.

Hopefully someone else has helped you with the girly stuff, because I am honestly terrible at that. Good luck on everything! Feel free to pm me if you feel like shit and need to talk.

Granny panties should do the trick if your waist band is the issue.

I'm sorry you have to go through this. Ectopic pregnancies are scary as shit. I can't really offer any advice on what to do with grandma except to hang in there (helpful, I know). Hopefully someone else will be abe to help you better. Good luck!
