Being retained for not passing the 3rd grade reading FCAT was hardly a new event last year. It happened for years before and will happen again this year. Some of the kids who didn't pass went to summer skill and passed an alternate reading assessment and went on to 4th.

Also, while I don't teach 4th, I heard that the prompt for 4th grade writing had something to do with camels... because all 10-11 year old kids in the sunshine state have background knowledge enough about camels to write a 5 paragraph essay.

I personally like to pretend it takes place in the same universe as the Stand. The survivors set their new capitol in Boulder, CO, so it fits the general area. Most people in the world are dead from plague... and even though you think evil was defeated, it arises again and again to corrupt.
