I've always wanted to make a documentary on the drag queens of the bible belt. "Paris is Burning", a great documentary from the 80's drag scene is good, but dated. Dealing with this issue in the south around such religious people would be a fun juxtaposition.

Years ago in college I worked in a gay night club in Asheville and was just enthralled at these people and how they actually lived. There was this one, I can't remember her name now, but he had no eyebrows but still worked at Lowe's in the hardware department! I thought it was so poetically funny.

I say find a drag queen from both low camp and high fish and follow them. There are pageants going on this fall, I'm sure. You can follow one there leading up to the finale of that pageant. Tons of drama and a history of a little known subgroup.

EDIT 2: Fun fact: Dorian Corey, one of the queens in this movie has a skeleton in her closet. Literally. When she died of AIDS in the 90's friends of her's went through her costumes to sell. There, they found a mummified body wrapped in faux leather and stuffed in a suit case. With the body was a letter of apology. You can read all about it here.
