I've never used the brush on dullcote, just the aerosol. But I've never had problems with it. This is a stupid question but were your washes dry?

I still prefer the "shell" you get from testor's dullcote, but vallejo's matte varnish is still really good.

Testor's dullcote is all you need. 2-3 applications.

You may want to look into a regulator anyway, as extended use of the compressor can do funky things with your air pressure. (The tank itself warms and expands). Sounds like you're set though.
