Do you think there should be a reconsideration of the drinking age in the US? by ikilledearlmillfordin AskReddit

I'm not that old or that cool, actually.

How do you even think that would be viable?!?!

I mean, yes, I'll remove the comments, but I'm not conceding to your other demands.

I don't even know where I'd find a 10 lb. tub of lard, a ferret or a cubic foot of carpet tacks.

Firstly, I'm probably old enough to be your father or at least a creepy uncle.

Secondly, I can't even remember high school (although that may be from years of heavy drinking). Very little I do in my day-to-day routine is high school related, especially my opinions, which are mostly cynicism mixed with rage, satire, wit, ranting hyperbole and a heavy shake of dick jokes.

I was able to read you comment in the cache but all I get now is:

Did... did you just file a copyright violation on yourself for using your own name?

BS. The FBI is too busy policing copyright infringement for their corporate overlords to worry about underaged drinking.

I practiced Kilmer's behind-the-back-flip-toss sword move for hours. I can still do it, with a little warm up.

Interesting.

If these people believe that we can banish their Omnipotent Lord and Saviour from a building merely by saying that it is unconstitutional to have state-approved prayer in state run schools, he doesn't sound so all-powerful.

What's next?

He can't cross moving water? He has to be invited in? You can only get your prayers answered if you say his name 3 times?

Ahh. Gotcha. I'll reread it when I'm not in a rush and give it more attention.

Hey, ever since I did this about a year ago, things like Kotaku Core are much, much more enjoyable.

I've been a fan of Lore since the Brunching Shuttlecocks. I had followed him on Wired for a while but thought he had stopped writing for them.

I think his style of writing is very sarcastic and maybe a bit snide or negative, but he's writing comedy. I think you're taking a piece written by a humorist who's a bit heady handed with the satire and sarcasm altogether too seriously. It's like complaining about Colbert for mocking politics. He's doing satire, although Colbert is even more blunt with it.

Is OKCupid full of shit, or are like 80% of women bisexual? by tabertossin AskReddit

[–]ManiacalV 1 point2 points ago

People lie on a Heterosexual-Homosexual spectrum.

Historically, it looks like people have pretty much always "gone both ways". It was either fine or grounds for murder, based societal acceptance. I read somewhere that very firm gender roles are more modern and there used to be a less concentration on "GAY OR STRAIGHT" in the past, especially before Abrahamic religions hit the scene, but I can't remember where I saw it. If anyone knows the source, give me a heads up?

So, as I understand it, a lot of people have at least a slight attraction to certain members of the same sex but it varies by person and is mostly repressed by culture. If people grew up without religions telling them they would burn in hell for sinning, casual sexual encounters with the same sex might occur a lot more often.

Atheists have less concern about religious stigma and because of societal gender roles, it's not acceptable for macho, tough men to say that Brad Pit is kind of attractive but it's not that big of a deal when a girl says that Milla Jovovich is hawt in The Fifth Element.

Thus atheist girls on OKCupid are fine with admitting they like it both ways.

Dungeon Defenders, anyone? by Pyrotechnistin Playdate

[–]ManiacalV 0 points1 point ago

My 8 year old step-son loves it.

I tried playing and it's not bad on PC, but I'm biased because I originally played it on a tablet and the controls were like trying to operate a stenotype machine with frostbite while wearing mittens.

The End of Privacy - Google's announced a new privacy policy: If you're signed into any Google service, the info it collects from you can be combined with information from every other Google service to build a gigantic profile of your activities & preferences. by anutensilin politics

[–]ManiacalV 1 point2 points ago

If you aren't paying for a product, you are the product.

If you don't want to access the wonderful features of Google, then don't. The cost of these 'free' services is that the company sells your information? Don't like it? Get off the net cause that's how it works. The pay-for-everything model failed. People want free shit, but nothing is free; it has to be profitable to the people running it or it can't sustain itself and will end.

I highly doubt that any single fact about your life (or lives of the millions of users) is as important to these companies as your demographic profile and general browsing habits. No one is going to sit down and scan through what porn you watch. This makes them absolutely no money.

They will look at trends and demographics.

A 30-45 year old white male from the west coast spent 10% of his time on sites selling off road bike equipment. If we use that info so that future 30-45 year old white males from that area see more bike gear ads and less tampon ads, we make more money (or save more with finer targeted ads).

Yeah, some of this shit is a bit scary, but in general, there so many people and so much data it's egotistical and paranoid to think that any one chunk of your personal data is interesting to anyone in the industry. You are a number that helps target ads. You are a consumer who must be aimed at a specific company. That's why they want your data.
