TROPHY CASE

It's actually proven that people enjoy Facebook use more when those who are around have miserable statuses, or are in worse shape than the user. It has something to do with ones self value compared to others. Conversely, this is also why you feel disappoint when others are doing "better" than you.

Girl Scouts: 210 Billion Calories Per Year = $714,000,000 in Revenue by bu51n355in business

I recall it being closer to 10 cents when I was in grade school and my sister sold cookies, but that's the better part of 16 years ago. I don't have anything to validate that claim though, so I went and looked up current data. I know they don't get much, that's for sure. If I was a cookie company, I'd totally be down for having aa fleet of little girls selling my wares. How can you say no to that? I mean, really.

I didn't even boot the last machine I bought. I took an image of the drive, wiped it, and started from scratch. I can always toss the original image back on it if I ever need to. I never bothered to look at it, no need of I'm just going to wipe. Thought I might as well save it for the sake of troubleshooting if I ever need something out of it.

Perhaps contact the MFG or consult either manual for troubleshooting? Not so sure how pioneer would go about supporting a house brand or generic adapter. I'd start by calling the mfg to see if others are able to use it successfully. I'm not familiar with this particular piece of gear.

Connecting my iMac to my receiver. by pushadin audiophile

[–]LoganPhyve 3 points4 points ago

If your imac has optical, I'd opt for that. It will pass digital to your amp, which will then function as a DAC (digital / analog converter). However, I have no clue what ports are available on the imac you have.

If you don't have optical on the imac, do you have SPDIF? You can pass that to the amp as well, and have it decode for you. SPDIF is just the coax/copper flavor of optical. They're both digital feeds. Send one of these to your amp and have it do the decoding for you :) One of the advantages with optical is that electrical signals can't interfere with it.

If you're using the regular 1/8 trs headphone jack on your soundcard, you're missing out on some definition and quality. Using a real hardware DAC, either the one in your amp, or a dedicated outboard USB DAC, you'll hear a big difference. Internal sound cards don't hold a candle to a good, quality dedicated DAC.

Girl Scouts: 210 Billion Calories Per Year = $714,000,000 in Revenue by bu51n355in business

[–]LoganPhyve 4 points5 points ago

It really bums me out that the girl scouts only get some ridiculously small amount of money for what they sell. If I recall, it's like 50 cents a box or something, last time we looked into it (sister was a GS). Not to compare apples to oranges, but I think trails end gives something like 33% of their profit to the BSA. GSA gets walked all over by the cookie company, which makes out like a bastard with cute little faces hawkin' their expensive cookies for almost nothing.

I'd just as soon donate some cash to the GSA and forego the cookies. Donating a fiver does more than selling 10 boxes of cookies, if this is still the case.

I'd be happy to link to you in the sidebar, I'd only ask the same. You may want to post some shameless self bumps to some of the other audio subreddits, and/or message the mods to see if you can get added there as well.

I gave your sub a +1 as well.

I haven't yet heard back from several of the other audio subs in the reddit audio network, but I'm hoping we get added there soon. /r/audiophile was good enough to add us in there without even asking. Gotta love those guys over there, one of my favorite communities :)

Is it alright to use an AC adapter whose plug fits, and is the same voltage, but higher amps that the original for a laptop? by jook11in techsupport

[–]LoganPhyve 3 points4 points ago

It's ok to have some higher amperage, within reason. Current is pulled, while voltage is pushed. You should only drive a circuit with the correct voltage. However, a circuit will only pull the amount of current it needs. So, at or above the amperage rating is ok, but the polarity and voltages must be right on or you will do damage.

You can think of voltage and current in terms of water through a garden hose. Voltage is the water pressure, while current is the volume of water. You will only take the volume that you need, but if the pressure is higher than the hose is rated for, part of your hose will blow. You need bigger diameter pipes (wire gauge) for more current, and thicker insulation (pipe walls) for more pressure (voltage).

[–]LoganPhyve 8 points9 points ago

No. I'm inviting them to an a la carte model. The idea of buy only what you want.

The main reason cable is so expensive is because contracts have to be negotiated between the network and the cable service provider, and you pay for all of those contracts with one bill issued by that provider. One of the worst aspects of a combined-delivery service is that it relys on everyone sharing the bill for everything. This is like living in a building and sharing a heat bill. You may only want to pay for 65 degress, but the cold little old lady upstairs wants her apartment at 90 degrees. So she pays the same as you but benefits more than you, because she gets more utility out of the same service. Why should you pay more for heat you won't be using? Why should you pay more for channels you don't want? It is said that sporting networks account for the majority of the cost in the cable provider's case. Giving the customer the ability to subscribe to only what they want should provide lower costs, not higher, except for in the case of those expensive network feeds. Let those who want them pay for them, and let those who don't, off the hook.

In turn the customer's cost is lower since they can pay a super-low rate, and they only pay for what they want. The networks' profits will be better in turn as well, as they can actually charge a bit more per head than the cable company is paying, broken down per subscriber, and still be extremely profitable for very low costs to the consumer. The networks that don't get subscribers? They die, just like they should. We all have channels about which we wonder why they still exist, channels we don't want to pay for. All of this content can be delivered digitally, with ease. The framework is there, build a new model that utilizes it.

Like I said, I really only want maybe a dozen or two dozen channels. The rest is lost on my household, yet I continue to pay for them needlessly. Networks need to compartmentalize their offerings in a manner where you can subscribe to them at similar rates to which they already receive, which would be very low cost-per-household if you look at the numbers.

So no, I'm not begging to be nickel and dimed, I'm begging for the ability to subscribe ala carte, and buy only what I want for a reasonable rate comparable to what I already pay based upon my current media needs and subscriptions.

I don't know how long TNT.com has been doing this, but it's b.s. by mijamala1in cordcutters

[–]LoganPhyve 12 points13 points ago

Really, If I could pay maybe 10-20 networks a minimal monthly fee of an average of a buck or two for their COMPLETE streaming programming, I'd opt to, and dump my cable tv in a heartbeat. By streaming, I mean the actual broadcast feed, in addition to the "on demand" services that come along with normal cable packages.

What the networks fail to understand is that there is money to be made here. Want to profit from your content? Sell it cheap, and the masses will flock to it. Make it easy to get, inexpensive, and attainable without needing to jump through hoops.

It's easier for me to pirate it at this point. Would I mind paying for the ability to watch any of that network's content at any time? No - it would be a great service. And in all truthfulness, the networks that have great content will thrive, while the ones that fail to entertain will die.

This is the business model that needs to be adopted. I'm sick of paying 70 bucks a month for a pile of sports channels, mtv, and several hundred other shit networks I'll never watch. But I really do want to subscribe to a handful of networks I do like. I could seriously be happy with a dozen or so channels, which is all I care to watch anyway. An even better idea would be to offer a premium price, for a day, or a week of service. Want to watch the Olympics, but don't get that channel? Oh, look, I can subscribe for a single week for 2 bucks! /wish

Compartmentalize this business model and offer customers a really great price - and it will flourish. Aside from that, I'll just keep pirating content I've already paid for through my cable subscription. It just means I'll have to do the dirty work and store it myself.
