TROPHY CASE

Reddit, What are some interesting seemingly illegal (but legal) things one can do? by Z3Fin AskReddit

[–]LieutenantClone 2 points3 points ago

I'm not sure you are both talking about the same thing. CaptinMidnight, I believe, is talking about entering private buildings, where as you are talking about entering private property. Entering private buildings in the US would be breaking and entering, and is illegal, no?

This is why "teleportation" for sentient beings is nothing more than a fantasy construct.

I disagree. What is being discussed, although it would appear to be teleportation, is not really teleportation at all; you are copying the object and deleting the original. IMO, to me teleportation means that the original atoms that make up the object actually get moved to the new location. I would suppose that teleportation could be possible using something along the lines of a black hole to create an instantaneous link between two places by warping space and time.

Not using code because it "could be harmful" is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. By that logic, we should all stop using pointers too.

No, its a pretty damn common standard. You write a {, then you make sure there is a }. You write a <b>, you make sure there is a </b>. For every opening tag, there is a 99% chance it will be followed by a closing tag of some kind. Its a pretty common programming paradigm. And there is no reason to stray from that paradigm for something as silly as "I have no control over my hands and might accidentally spam spaces after the closing tag".

You may or may not be an idiot, but you are definitely full of yourself.

Yet for all the thousands of PHP files I have authored, I have never once had this problem. It's really not the landmine you make it out to be.

If you code your site correctly, there should be no need for something hacky like omitting end tags.

Actually, neither way is "wrong", its a matter of preference. There is no disadvantage to including the end tags as long as you don't have a strange disease that causes you to spam unnecessary whitespace all over your documents, which apparently many people in this thread are afflicted with.

It is the easiest thing in the world to accidentally add a white space or linefeed unintentionally.

No, its really not. I really don't understand how you can accidentally go slamming your spacebar all over the place. I type exactly what I want to type, and nothing more.

It's also not a standard, and never has been.

Always closing your tags is a pseudo standard in general, yes. To deny that is to claim that gravity doesn't exist.

I never said it was wrong, I said it was hacky, and Google readily admits that omitting end tags is hacky. I'm not saying anyone is wrong, I am stating my preference, get off my lawn.

There is no utility to omitting end tags, if you are programming your website properly. And its not OCD, its simply following the age-old standard of "always close your tags".

[–]LieutenantClone -7 points-6 points ago

Sure they are not required, a lot of things are "not required" in programming, but its still a good idea to use them. You could write a complex mathematical formula without brackets, but it would be hell to read later, for example. I prefer to follow the overall golden rule of "always close your tags".

In my 10+ years of programming, I have never accidentally added whitespace to the end of a file. I am not sure how someone would do such a thing, other than maybe a bad file merge or an automated tool gone wrong. I don't know about you, but I don't just go around throwing whitespace all over the place :)

That's an incorrect assumption. The closing tags exist to be used. Omitting them is the correct convention by Zend standards, but not for PHP as a whole. If you code your site correctly, there should be no need for something hacky like omitting end tags.

Probably whenever we get all those other basic features that every other IM client has. Which is likely never.

I love Steam to death, but one must admit that the client is seriously lacking in features. And the features that it does have are sometimes very poorly implemented (for example: both the "grouping" features in the games and friends lists are different, but equally counter intuitive and sucky).

Excellent. This is the type of thing I like to hear. Let them "turn off" the camera, but record anyway.

IMO, give people the benefit of the doubt, but double check that their story checks out regardless.

I didn't have exams in College, it was all final projects. A lot of crunch time close to the end of the semester, but far, far more satisfying. As soon as I was done College, I immediately missed it. I would love to go back, but alas, I need the monies.
