TROPHY CASE

Coaching and Improvement Session #7 by Echo_in starcraft_strategy

oh no! :( but no one can coach terran

What are the general advantages and disadvantages of each race? by M15CH13Fin starcraft_strategy

[–]L0X 2 points3 points ago

I don't really agree with a few of your points. I'll just point out the disagreements in the zerg/protoss section as I've never played terran before as a main race.

Zerg:

Zergs can dictate the game as much as they want as long as they're willing to hold off on drones. Many zergs at high levels and at master/grandmaster level do baneling busts ALL the time in ZvT. Many zergs on ladder also 11pool in ZvP. This 'sets' the pace of the game, because it makes your opponent micro and defend. Zergs can be as aggressive or as passive as they want, it all depends on who's playing.

Protoss:

Dark Templar and Motherships are used literally ALL the time in PvZ and dark templars are used in PvT as well. Why in PvZ? Zergs are slow in getting detection, and if you send 1 dt around to all of their bases to go harass it's a freaking pain in the ass to deal with it late game (same with vs terran). Motherships on the other hand are really good vs broodlords in an archon toilet because broodlords are slow so they can't spread out fast enough to avoid archon AOE and they stack because they are air. In PvT, as I said above, it'll be really annoying to deal with dark templars late game if you send one to each base. Something more annoying though is occasionally sending one dt to go harass the army when it's in the middle of the map. Late game a terran's goal is to build so many orbitals so you can sack a lot of SCVS for more supply and ALL of your mineral income is from mules. 1 DT = 1 scan = a terrans life.

You don't need detection vs. a terran unless they're going banshee or very late game, but since observers cost 25/75 and only take 30seconds to build (20 seconds with 1 chrono boost), most people would get them out pretty fast especially since almost all protoss go fast colossus.

What do you mean by "at least stalkers". In ZvT do I have to get "at least banelings"? I don't understand what you mean by that. Stalkers only require pylon->gateway->cybernetics core, they aren't out of the way in the tech tree or anything.

The upgrades are also EXTREMELY important in every matchup for Protoss because their units are beefy so each +1 armor you get is extremely effective, check out this link yourself. (ie zealots take 5 more hits from stimmed marines to die with +1 armor.) Did I mention that protoss upgrades are cheaper than any other races' upgrades?

RPI and math? by Dinstructionin RPI

[–]L0X 1 point2 points ago

TLDR: take foundations as soon as you can, and become acquainted with math professors early on so you can do research with them.

RPI and math? by Dinstructionin RPI

[–]L0X 3 points4 points ago

I agree with timwizard, taking Foundations as soon as possible is a good idea. Once you take Foundations, you are open to almost all of the higher level math courses. Pure mathematics is a decision I would make after you've taken Foundations as it is basically intro to Pure Math. :P

If you skip calculus I, obviously take Calculus II in freshman year, and then try to take diff eq and multivariable at the same time (it shouldn't be too difficult as both classes aren't very hard [i took diffeq with isaacson and multivariable with mclaughlin]). After that, you can take foundations along with advanced calculus (also not a hard class but you MUST ATTEND LECTURES). Hope that helped.

Most people with math majors dual major or at least minor in something else (most of my friends dual in physics and applied/pure math). Thus, they get research in those fields instead of Math fields. HOWEVER, there are opportunities with professors around the school as they love math. However, you have to be acquainted with them early on.

If you were curious, I am currently a sophomore dual majoring at RPI (Applied Math and Mechanical Engineering).

with megabus OP will have to transfer like 4-5 times depending on where in illinois they live in. (not including getting to the first megabus station by taxi/bus/etc) x_x

Maybe state your League in posts when giving advice. by andrewin94in starcraft_strategy

[–]L0X 0 points1 point ago*

I get scared of posting my league because I'm not Masters and even though most if not all of the things I post here are regurgitating what Master's friends have told me, I'm afraid that people will completely neglect my post just because of my league and not actually look at the content.

I totally understand your opinion and I agree with it, but I'm also still scared to do it O_O

[Zerg] How to respond to 1 rax FE from Terran by 1337HxCin starcraft_strategy

[–]L0X 1 point2 points ago*

My Master's Z friend showed me a variation of this build:

DRG's 15 hatch/15 pool early Roach Pressure

I really like it because it denies early hellions and roaches are pretty good against a small number of marines. After/While you pressure with your roaches you are also free to drone really freaking hard and you can transition into anything you want which is nice.

HOWEVER, it's a little all-inish in the beginning because you stop droning pretty early, so you have to do some damage. This usually isn't hard, especially against a 1rax FE build. I personally have never outright killed anyone with it so it sets you up for a nice macro game as long as the opponent doesn't freak out and all-in you o_o

OP said gasless, meaning it would be a while before he could get a sizeable number of any of those things. Also, if you can micro your lings/banes it shouldn't be a problem especially if they're on creep.

why can't you join? :( TS still not working?

I don't think Amtrak is the cheapest option, try seeing if megabus has a station near you (it's pretty cheap, but it's a crowded). I looked up on the site and they have a stop in chicago, normal, champaign, and st louis.

here's the site. I imagine if you do take megabus you'll probably have to go to NYC and then take another megabus into Albany/Rensselaer.

EDIT: turns out it'll probably take you 4-5 buses with megabus, so amtrak is probably better sorry :(

If you aren't sure about your league, you can always join the Bronze-Gold one first, play a few games and see if you are about that skill level or not.

The coaching sessions are every saturday when big tournaments aren't occurring from 5pm-8/9pm. You don't have to sign up, just show up. Echo_ usually posts about it on tuesday/wednesday.

What usually happens is, first you join the teamspeak server: server.valdegames.com and then people get separated by leagues (bronze-gold and plat/diamond) and we do separate peepmodes with coaches helping you while you play. This is for NA players only.

You are welcome to come on the teamspeak whenever, there are usually people online all the time. Master's people are on a lot and you're welcome to ask questions.

The TS can be accessed by NA and EU players (a few of the players that go on it have an EU account), but the coaching sessions are for only-NA accounts. Hopefully in the future we can have EU coaching events as well :( Sorry

Yes (:. The plan is for the sessions to be weekly on non-tournament weekends. However, the TS will always be open (:

The rooms being deleted will never happen again as we are moving to a different TS server hosted by someone we trust. It runs 24/7 and is awesome (:

new server: server.valdegames.com

Also, normal terran hotkeys I believe are 1-3 : Army 4: Command Center 5: Rax 6: Factory 7: Starport

The reason for 3 army hotkeys is because 1 for main army (huge bio ball) and 2 or 3 for ghosts/tanks and the unused one for drops.

You can also change your hotkeys at anytime in the game (:

Newb Question - What does the 4 on a "4 Gate" mean? by LeftJoin79in starcraft2_class

[–]L0X 0 points1 point ago

Zerg in terms of just mechanics is probably the farthest away from terran as you can get. With the exception of drones, it's not important when you build units because you can pool larva with injects (of course you need to build units when you're about to get attacked though).

As terran you need to stay on top of your production structures constantly and make sure they are constantly building something. As you cannot build many units very quickly, not building out of any buildings is inefficient and you end up floating resources most of the time.

Protoss is kind of a fusion of the two races in a way because warp-ins are similar to zerg mass producing at once, but their special tech structures (robo bay, stargate) require a build-time like Terran.

FYI: warp-ins are a protoss mechanic where once the cybernetics core researches warp gate and the gateway is made into a warp gate, a protoss player can now warp-in (magically create units anywhere) where there is pylon power (the blue circle you see around a pylon when it's selected).

Zerg Tech Tree

Protoss Tech Tree

Right now I suggest not even worrying about scouting and just work on getting a good economy, the only thing you'll lose to is cannon/dt rushes I believe

Also, archon's can be morphed from two dts, two hts, or one of each

why is mumble better? Aren't they essentially the same thing except mumble being open source? I do think that hosting a different TS server is better though as the one we were using had a max occupancy of 35 people and I think having the capacity be 50 would be good for these type of events

What is it like to be a woman at RPI? by CaldwellBHiraiin RPI

[–]L0X 0 points1 point ago

TBH I love the ratio here, mostly because I play video games a lot (recently skyrim but about a month ago, mostly Starcraft 2) and at my high school I didn't know/hang out with anyone that played games so coming to a school full of nerds is really nice (:. I don't need female companionship as much as other females I think so I'm totally fine in that department haha.

P.S. - some women jokes are getting really old though
