TROPHY CASE

Lawyers, what cases are you sorry you won? by navysilkin AskReddit

[–]Khiva 25 points26 points ago

I'm quite skeptical of this story, really.

The guy wasn't willing to risk disbarment to save a molested kid, but was willing to share the story with a bunch of students? Anyone could have looked up the guy's case history and found the guy who did this, and probably should, were the story true.

It's just ...unacceptable somehow.

I think #2 is both good and necessary.

You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a circlejerk in /r/atheism. You have to restrict /r/atheism posts for the same reason that Judith Butler is banned from horrible academic writing contests - to give other people a chance.

Not only that, but you can at least appreciate that the /r/atheism circlejerk is cabined off into one section of the site so you can ignore it. It's when circlejerks push themselves into other areas (like that one guy who exclusively posts Glen Greenwald into TrueReddit) that really annoy me.

Dead Space without the sound design would, I think, be an extremely mediocre title.

In fairness, you could easily say the same thing about Amnesia.

  • See monster.

  • Hide.

  • Monster goes away.

  • Lever puzzle

  • Repeat.

I understand that we're all mad about this, and people are mad at Blizzard for implementing this always-on aspect of the game. And we also all know that, no matter what anybody says, a lot of the reason is because of cheaters, hackers, and pirates.

What I don't get is - why is nobody ever mad at the cheaters, hackers and pirates who make companies feel like this is a necessary step? Why is all the anger directed at the companies, who arguably did not create the problem in the first place? I'm annoyed that this level of DRM exists, but I'm at least sympathetic to a company's desire to protect its product. I have no sympathy towards someone who simply wants to take something for free, and yet it's that latter category which manages to completely escape all attention when the conversation is had.

Boy is this comment ever going to get nuked once the mods show up (and probably mine too, which is as it should be).

But we could all do our part by downvoting this stuff in the first place. If we didn't upvote derpy jokes then we wouldn't need mods running around, looking over our shoulders and waving the hammer of Thor.

The Diablo 3 Double-Standard by TaxableBatin gaming

[–]Khiva 126 points127 points ago

I don't get how people have this mentality that every purchase has to be an all-or-nothing thing. A product has 9 things that I like and 1 thing that I don't, so on balance it's worth purchasing. If I say "Yes, this TV I got is good, but I don't like how the contrast looks during certain football matches" you don't come back with "THEN WHY WOULD YOU PURCHASE IT YOU CORPORATE SLAVE!!"

People don't like EA's customer service or product support. Fine. But, on balance, their titles offer good gameplay and a rich experience so a particular purchase turns, out on the whole, to be worth making. Just by purchasing it you don't automatically become a shill for The World's Most Evil Company, nor do you forfeit the right to point out where a company has shortcomings.

Ubisoft offered little if any benefit to always-on DRM, and the company doesn't have nearly the same track record of quality products as Blizzard. On the whole, people found that the pros outweighed the cons for the Diablo 3 and that's a perfectly legitimate position. That doesn't make them evangelical apostles for DRM, nor fanboys, nor sell-outs.

Not everything has to be black and white.

From what I've read, this will become an increasingly common thing.

Big studios are evidently concerned that people with both consoles and PCs will opt to pirate a new game for the PC if its immediately available for both. I don't know if that's actually true or not but it seems like a reasonable concern, though if word got out I've no doubt the community would place all the blame on the publishers and completely ignore the role of the pirates in creating the situation in the first place.

Ban the Witchhunts by lifehaverin bestof

[–]Khiva -8 points-7 points ago

Koproller, in an inspired bout of creative writing / stalking, wove these stories into one ridiculous narrative which would make anyone incredulous.

So, if I'm following you correctly, you are saying (1) that anyone would be incredulous at taking deadcoil's stories seriously when taken together, and (2) koproller is an asshole stalker for being incredulous at deadcoil's stories, when taken together.

Koproller didn't "provide a narrative," he simply pulled all the stories, put them in one place and said "Really? You did all this?" Here you acknowledge that it seems rather silly, then elsewhere you say that "deadcoil's stories aren't all the crazy."

Even your stories about his stories don't add up.

Also, this:

Koproller didn't ask for a source

is just flatly untrue. Linking from the original post, he states pretty flatly:

"do you have ANY kind of proof.. for ANY of your stories?"

If this isn't healthy skepticism, I don't know what is.

It's people like you that ruin story telling. You are not entitled to proof.

No sir, it's people like you that are the reason why the most astonishingly transparent bullshit ends up cluttering up IAMA to the point that the community will degrade to where it's nothing but "I am Santa Claus. Ask me anything."

We very, very much need people who are willing to ask questions, to be skeptical, and to ask for proof. For Christ's sake, it says at the very top of the page the Deadcoil posted to "Ask the OPs to provide proof, and upvote those that do!" His stories, when taken together, are extremely hard to believe and, when questioned on them, he threw a huge bitchfit about the whole thing rather than comply.

Perhaps you would like to live in a world where you naively believe every funny thing that's told to you. There are plenty of people like you, which is why /r/politics and Fox News are able the thrive. It surprises me nonetheless, however, that people are willing to so vociferously defend drooling credulity as an approach to life.

There absolutely no reason, much less any justification for a police officer to ever stop and frisk a person, much less a black guy.

Thanks for this post. Your vigilance is the only thing that kept the stop and frisk escalating to a level 3 inconvenience.
