Safe garbage chutes? by pytechdin dwarffortress

[–]Jurph 0 points1 point ago

Why not create an airlock? Build a rock-working facility at Z0, with a lockable door leading to the bottom of your dump shaft. At Z1, install a retractable bridge. From Z2 ... ZN, you can dump stuff down the shaft. Allow the rocks to accumulate, and then every few months lock the door, retract the bridge for a moment, let the dust settle, and then close the bridge and unlock the door. The masons get the accumulated stone and a safe roof over their heads. Ta-da!

I like to give a few commoners points in moodable skills, and also hold a few aside if I need to mass-produce shoes and clothing. Nothing sucks more than watching dwarves throw out XX☼cat leather shoes☼XX and then getting my best leatherworker in a foul mood...

I'm thinking that the repeater functionality will also allow for simple multiplexer programming: when the cart goes around the loop, it can trigger not just a single pressure plate, but a scripted sequence of plates. Then by carefully editing track lengths, you could create a sequencer that (e.g.) opens the magma floodgate on the goblins, closes the fortress access hatch, waits for the magma to fill up, and then drains the magma out again, and then finally closes the magma drains and re-opens the fortress access hatch.

Not so much a repeater as a sequencer in that role.

I haven't bought from O'Reilly before. If I order the book, do I understand correctly that they'll send me a paper copy and I'll be able to download the eBooks as needed?

This is going to make Blockbuster a ton of money! With gas prices on the rise and Blockbuster locations closing all the time, it's cheaper to continue to pay the late fees than to drive to the next-nearest location which has not yet gone out of business.

TIL The Disney Channel doesn't accept outside ads. The only commercials it airs are for its own shows and Disney products. by gog2rinoin todayilearned

[–]Jurph 1 point2 points ago

Not only that, but the budget books can be adjusted entirely in-house. Each show can "sell" its advertising slots to another Disney productfor exactly what the show cost to make -- so none of the shows make a profit. Any Disney-owned movie can buy advertising on the channel at those rates in order to write it off as an expense.

So if your show costs $500k to make and you have 5 breaks with 4 commercials each, you sell each slot for $25k. Each Disney product advertised takes it as a write-off, and the show breaks even. At MouseHQ, they take the cable fee revenues and divvy them up into the production budgets for movies, which buy ads on the network and take the ad buys as expenses... So they can effectively launder their profits from any Disney venture.

I dug a maintenance tunnel to the outside of "B"-level (waterwheels and pumps) and selected "Start pumping manually", but by the time the dwarf got there, the system had already self-started. The inflow from the reservoir should be enough to self-start the leftmost water reactor.

[–]Jurph 1 point2 points ago

When your metal resources are limited, it is sometimes preferable to set up a repeating order in a single workshop. Start with the most critical armor items - breastplate, helm, greaves, boots, gauntlets -and then does a mail shirt, a cap, another mail shirt, and another cap, plus a shield if you like. This ensures that you're producing as many full suits as possible.

The leather works order is also easy: trousers, mittens, cloak, hood, cloak, hood. You can go back and make batches of cloaks and hoods to reach maximum coverage, but this ensures that you've got basic leather coverage for each soldier as well.

I've observed both "saw a waterfall" and "had a bath" happy thoughts from my setup (v34.07, unmodded). The ones who go through the doors in the statue garden have a good chance of getting sprayed. About one month into the deployment I've got over 90% of my dwarves at ecstatic and have moved all six unhappy / miserable dwarves up to 'fine'.

If you like I can post the graph paper blueprints I drew beforehand, but the concept is the same as the one on the wiki. You want a loop of pumps separated by single tiles so that each pump pulls the slug of water three tiles horizontally and one vertically, then drops it one tile vertically to create mist. For my purposes I needed to wrap that design around a central stairwell with room for a glass safety barrier and run the power plant off the same water supply that the mist generators used.

Try to imagine each of the isometric cubes as a ▒ character, and everywhere you see a dwarf, mentally replace it with the @ symbol. The bits that look like stairs are all up-down staircases, so replace 'em with X.
