TROPHY CASE

If you were put in charge of trimming Earth's human population down to 3 billion or so, what would your criteria be for who stays and who goes? by Clayburnin AskReddit

Don't forget the telephone sanitisers. And then everyone died from a disease spread by dirty telephones. I think we should think this through before carrying it out.

It doesn't undermine the ring at all, rather it shows how "strong of heart" or whatever Faramir and Sam are. They understand what the ring is, and what it can do to/for them, and they still don't accept it.

I think I will have to watch the extended editions. That was the biggest problem I had with the movies. Faramir was supposed to be this pure hearted man who understood the mistakes his brother had made, and what Frodo was actually trying to achieve, and so tried to help him as much as he could. In the movie they just made him some loser constantly trying step out from under his brother's shadow, and trying to impress his father, without any individual thought.

That's the point I'm making, American spelling quite often closer to the phonetic pronunciation, but reading them still makes me cringe. I'm only talking about spelling. If I see "meter", I read it as guage that measures something, not a unit of distance.

I cringe whenever I see it spelt "liter". "Litre", like "metre", like it is in "METRic". Americans and their switching words around to make them easier to spell, GOD DAMMIT THERE IS A "PH" in SULPHUR.

I've got my copy in the mail, along with a bunch of Books records. I got a little carried away, but I really loved that album.

I'm a big Vonnegut fan, and I liked slaughterhouse 5, but I think some of his other books were "better". The one I used to introduce my friend to Vonnegut was a bunch of short stories called Welcome to the Monkey House (the guy was a huge dandy warhols fan) and also Cat's Cradle.

Back in the day TRL used to 'retire' videos that lasted in the top ten for too long. I think r/music needs to start doing the same thing for songs on its front page. I know Gorillaz are awesome, but seriously, this is like the 20th time I'm seeing On Melancholy Hill up in this bitch. by fuzzydunlapin Music

I heard somewhere that it's their most played song live. I saw them earlier this year and their set went over time, so they got the crowd to pick their last song, out of rolling, faith, or break stuff. Obviously break stuff won.

And I still knew every word.

What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZeroin AskReddit

That seems really weird to me. In Australia, you need 50% for a passing mark. At least in high school and university. We also have 3 scales (highest to lowest) , A-E, 7-1, or high distinction - fail.

On the A-E scale, usually used in high school, A-C are passes, C- the lowest pass mark, and D is for failing work. E is normally a non submission.

The scale is used for universities that I've had experience with, 100%-85%for top marks 7 or high distinction, 75-85% for 6 or distinction, 65-75% for a 5/credit, 50-65% for a 4 or pass, 45-50 for a 3 (I know my uni will let you retake your final exam if you get a 3, and if you do well enough in the repeat they'll give you a passing grade)

This is also done as a % of available marks, not top % of the class, so it is possible to have a class full of 7s, or a class full of 3s

If somebody a few feet away can hear your stomach "growling" through all the fat and muscle of your body, does that mean it has to be deafeningly loud INSIDE your body? Is there an actual measurement in dB that can be made? by Aeon_fuzzin askscience

It affects how fast it dissipates, so it will dissipate slower in water. Over the same distance, sound that has traveled through water will seem louder than one that traveled through air.

Aussies, where do you buy vinyl online? by deniall83in vinyl

[–]Jaraarph 0 points1 point ago

It depends what I'm buying. I generally get relatively new releases, on smallish labels, so I try to buy as much as I can from the labels themselves. It normally works out about 20-30 per record, including postage.

If you're looking for stuff that is mostly older, or on big labels, Amazon is what I use.

[–]Jaraarph 1 point2 points ago

Man, so this. Also I would buy all these rad records when they come out the first time.

I'd end up being in the right place at the right time for so much music that I didn't know about/was too young for/was nowhere near geographically and I'd name drop the shit out of artists I'd met when they weren't famous

Nor should they be made to feel stupid for not knowing about something that has no use for modern computers.

Why? It's not like anyone uses floppy disks anymore, they were quickly replaced by better, bigger storage devices, and what does it have to do with command lines? As soon as anyone mentions how people don't know what a floppy disk is, reddit goes into a huge faux-nostalgic wank-fest about how old they feel, and how they are losing faith in humanity.

Take it as a sign of human progression, instead of ridiculing someone for not knowing what a piece of obsolete technology is.

No I know, I was just pointing out how low gold grades actually are, something that I didn't realise until I started working with them. What Pzychotix said below is right; more of a fun fact relating to what your said.

Man, my boss would love me if I could get an ounce of gold out of 10 pounds of shit.

If you're using gold as an example, it's probably more like 10 pounds of shit for 2x10-4 ounces of gold. How mining companies make money out of mining 1-2g/t of gold gives you an idea of the scale of these mines.

Agreed. While the action was "cool" it's sort of meaningless when the plot doesn't make sense and we are told how to feel about characters/ how they feel about each other. On the other hand I liked iron man 1 and Thor. I think they just tried to cram too much into it

A friend of mine from high school and I started watching NFL a few years ago when it started to be regularly played live on our free-to-air tv. At about the same time my uncle from Rochester had come over to visit. We got to talking about teams, and who I was thinking I liked at the time. I think I'd said the Eagles, and he said pick the Bills.

After having a brief history lesson and told to watch some new WR that had just been drafted (Stevie Johnson), my uncle said that the team is starting to look better, and if they ever get a new coach and quarterback and a few other positions they could be real contender, my inner hipster came out and I figured if I picked the team and they won league in a few years time I'd be able to say I liked them before they were cool.

Been a Bills fan ever since
