Khaldor Appreciation Thread by SwiftCitizenin starcraft

[–]IcculusLizard 2 points3 points ago

Great work Khaldor! One piece of constructive criticism when it comes to player intros: players start at the lower right, not to the lower right (for example). I can't speak German so you're smarter than I either way :)

Yeah calling Sundance a pussy repeatedly really makes a great show /sarcasm

This is like the "shock jock" show of esports. It makes me feel dumb watching it. Downvote away.

Giant Bombshell in Arcade Alpha notes. SC2 now supports model importing! by entropyfailsin starcraft

[–]IcculusLizard 0 points1 point ago

I'm not an expert in modeling, so I'm probably not the best person to ask. I'd suggest posting in sc2mapster.com. There are lots of talented modelers there, although not everyone shares their knowledge on that board.

Blizzard is slowly killing this game by leXDin starcraft

I agree with the semantics, but the whole "man up and say they fucked up" is not the way to approach this issue. Oh wait that's right, it's reddit. Flame away.

I may be late but...what is the Arcade? by tallbus1in starcraft

[–]IcculusLizard 0 points1 point ago

Yep, another walled garden for developers. I don't much like those models myself. I prefer open standards and grey markets.

[–]IcculusLizard 2 points3 points ago

True. Creating new content requires a lot of talent/skill/time (money). Hopefully there will be better markets in other games, but I just don't see it in SC2.

Well you may have better info than I. I just can't imagine it would work (and have discussed with other mapmakers who agree). Developing SC2 maps is really really tedious and the potential market is way too small for companies to really consider it. Individual mapmakers could start charging, but would players really pay, especially when other mapmakers could create free versions via reverse engineering or straight up hacking? I've earned a total of $15 in donations for developing PeepMode (which gets 5k hours of play per day)...that suggests how much money people think this stuff is worth ($0). Not to mention that these "apps" only run in crappy battle.net, aren't 100% secure, and lack so many features it's hard to describe. It's wishful thinking for Blizzard to suggest that there is a potential for mapmakers to make money given the overall ecosystem. Just my two cents. Hope it works out for everyone.

If by "distributing" you mean accessing though battle.net, then you are correct. As the author of a popular map I have given up on the idea of a pay-to-play system (not that it would be good for the community anyway). Custom maps will always be free in SC2 as far as I can tell.

Ok then it would be awesome if blizzard could add a progress indicator showing the download progress for each pending player. The map maker or host could set limits on max download time.

The new feature is not importing. Importing models was always possible. The new feature is a helpful plugin for 3ds max.

Apparently the Alpha 1.5 patch works for anyone, not just those who were invited...and all of us who got invited were worried about an NDA lol

Well it would be nice to be able to set this timeout in custom games because making 13 other people wait for 30-45 seconds is completely unreasonable.

I didn't agree to participate in anything and I didn't sign anything. Nor did the invite email note anything about non-disclosure.

No I was invited via email and the email mentioned nothing about non-disclosure. They were asking for feedback so I thought it would be appropriate to get this out there for discussion at this early stage.

I believe the answer to your first question is "no", you can't browse lobbies or see who's playing.

The solution they've come up with seems to be a matchmaking system like ladder. If anyone at all is playing the map, you'll be put into a lobby with enough spaces for your party. Just like how it works now, essentially; the UI is just closer to how Ladder matchmaking works. It says "Finding players" at the top, etc
