Did anyone else not like Dumbledore's convenient terminal illness? by Rammikinsin harrypotter

[–]HowDidWeGetSoMean 2 points3 points ago

I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't believe Dumbledore could die until the moment he fell from the rooftop (and even then I had to flip ahead in the book to see if it was true). The fact that Snape said he had a few months to live did not even register with me as a possible truth. He's Dumbledore - how could he die?

I'm inexperienced and feel kind of lost when it comes to stuff like this, but if a guy has a lot of pre-come, does that mean he needs to come soon? should I have gotten him off in some way?

Please remember that no matter what the circumstances are, there is no situation in which you should feel obligated to do any sexual act.

Pre-come varies greatly from person to person...he may just produce a lot of it. Regardless, you should attempt to get him off if that's what you both want to do and not because he's reached a certain threshold of arousal.

When did Lily Potter perform the patronus charm? by procrastimasterin harrypotter

[–]HowDidWeGetSoMean 2 points3 points ago

I think Harry has a feeling when the doe leads him to the sword of Gryffindor in the lake in Book 7, but he would have had to connect the dots, something Harry doesn't normally do unless they are punching him in the face.

We "officially" find out, I believe, in Snape's memories at the end of Book 7. Snape is in Dumbledore's office, very angry, and he produces a Patronus to show Dumbledore that his Patronus has changed into the form of a doe, which is the same as Lily's.

My bolognese sauce. Any suggestions? by cosmoceratopsin Cooking

[–]HowDidWeGetSoMean 1 point2 points ago

It's common to add a small amount of sugar (or brown sugar if you have it) while cooking the tomatoes and meat because the sweetness contrasts nicely with the acidity of the tomatoes. I also like to add a few drops of balsamic vinegar.

A "devastating blow to Americans' battered image in the country"? What about a "devastating blow" to the families of the people who were killed?

I disagree. Using the "I'm the parent, so I'm right" excuse nullifies whatever reasons you've previously demonstrated, or at least weakens them. An appropriate response to end that argument would be telling the child that he/she is not accepting reality and to walk away, i.e. "You are going in circles, and I am ending this discussion" as opposed to a blatant lie.

[–]HowDidWeGetSoMean 0 points1 point ago

I really don't think you do. If we're trying to take away race-based privilege, it's not OK to use it just to "end the altercation." It's like a parent ending an argument with a child by saying "I'm the parent, so I'm right" rather than explaining WHY. It breeds discontent.

For the record, I do not mean to directly compare a conversation between a white person and a black person to one between a parent and child - it's the sentiment that is important.

This is what my comment meant. :) I am not making an implication that whites are superior - rather that they are often treated as such by people who don't think they are being racist.

Honestly, that's one of the shittiest things I've ever heard. Your privilege allows you to both say those things and make them a reality. You brought race into an argument to establish your superiority and I think you owe him an apology, regardless of what the argument was about.

I know that a lot of Redditors hate the Food Network, but I love this middle eastern salad recipe by Ina Garten. I serve it with toasted pita chips and it's something people don't really expect as an appetizer but looks and tastes really good.

My amazing girlfriend sent me her recipe for Shrimp Primavera.. by Rooskyin Cooking

[–]HowDidWeGetSoMean 0 points1 point ago

Your girlfriend has a real knack for remaining in character. I felt like I was listening to Hagrid describing a recipe.

That being said, I would suggest leaving the olive oil out of the pasta and instead adding more than just a pinch of salt - use at least a tablespoon or two. You don't need olive oil to make them not stick to each other - just stir the pasta while cooking and it will be fine.

If you want a different kind of shrimp flavor, I'd suggest roasting them. Get some uncooked, de-veined shrimp, throw them on a baking pan, and add some olive oil, salt and pepper. Cook them in the oven for 10-15 minutes at 425 degrees and they will add a lot more to this dish!

Hey Cookit, What can I do with canned tuna? by JUL1Ain Cooking

[–]HowDidWeGetSoMean 0 points1 point ago

I like to put tuna in cold pasta dishes. Make some pinwheel pasta, add tuna and mayonnaise, and then add whatever else you want. I usually put shredded carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, chick peas, and of course salt and pepper. Refrigerate and serve cold...great as a light snack or meal.

Are wizarding kind less susceptible to disease? by Unimehein harrypotter

[–]HowDidWeGetSoMean 0 points1 point ago

I agree with this. I think that if wizards had developed a magical cure for deadly diseases like cancer, they would have shared it in some way with Muggles. Yes, they don't like to get involved with Muggles, but I think they would have found a way to surreptitiously stop them from dying from preventable diseases. So, it must be something about the magical gene that changes the nature of the diseases wizards are susceptible to.

I just finished reading GoF to my daughter and I still think one of the Triwizard schools should have been the Salem Witch Institute. by Indyhousein harrypotter

[–]HowDidWeGetSoMean 2 points3 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

Is it possible that the Salem Witches' Institute was not comparable to Hogwarts, Beauxbatons, and Durmstrang? The only time we see them is when some witches string a banner for it over their tent at the World Cup. You don't see any Hogwarts students sitting under a Hogwarts banner, and the same for Beauxbatons and Durmstrang. I also got the impression that the witches at the Cup were older than school-aged. Because of this, I always imagined the Institute to be more like a Muggle book club or organization or something like that.

There's something about the Chamber of Secrets that bothers me. by Shankapotamusin harrypotter

[–]HowDidWeGetSoMean 16 points17 points ago

sorry, this has been archived and can no longer be voted on

I think one of the reasons the Chamber stayed hidden for so long was because of that - there was no way for the basilisk to get around. Tom Riddle was the first to ever open the Chamber, right? He probably discovered a way to get the basilisk to move through the pipes, and so he added the entrance through the bathroom while he was at Hogwarts. How he discovered it in the first place, we can only guess.
