I am a Marketing Manager. I've worked in entertainment, corporate and education. AMA by Hoodlinerin IAmA

Growing up in the '80s, I was just enamored by commercials. I was always a creative person and as I went through high school, I found myself not wanting to be a "starving artist", so I looked at all of the careers that still offered me a chance to have a creative outlet and still be able to support a family. I started with advertising and worked towards the marketing end.

I have used marketing to benefit higher education institutions. That's a challenging job. You have to balance between appeasing administration and the students you're trying to appeal too. Sadly, administration always wins and the messaging is always compromised.

I'm actually in the process of applying to be a part-time adjunct professor so I can teach marketing at the college level.

With advertising, it's important to have a strong portfolio and diversity matters. If you're doing copywriting or production, creative development, etc. you need to have a diverse body of work and styles. I've seen a lot of people who were insanely talented get dismissed because they only had one style of work.

Internships are VITAL. A good internship can open the door for you and really put you ahead of the pack. I certainly wouldn't

Marketing is the framework for how, what, when, where and why you advertise. It's the methodology behind the messaging and how you direct it. I've worked on both sides of the coin and the overlap is tremendous. At this stage in my career, I prefer the marketing side.

It's rare that anyone does. Those that I've known that have end up crushed by the glass ceiling, which isn't fair.

There really isn't an ideal strategy, but the most important thing to keep in mind when trying to market a product or service is to have a call to action. The vast majority of people aren't going to feel the need to click or read something unless it evokes an emotional response from them.

A lot of small businesses make the mistake of saying, "We want to market this to everyone"...and that's a terrible answer. Discern who your absolute core market/consumer/user is. If you have a small budget, target that core and only that core. That's what sustains the bottom line.

One of the pratfalls of social media advertising is the fact that people will tune out anything that's construed as being blatant advertising. They will, however, jump all over anything that asks for THEIR opinion and THEIR feedback. That's a call to action. One business that does a tremendous job with social media marketing on a budget of $0 is Fifteen52. They generate a lot of responses, likes and shares by simply posting photos of cars, sometimes with their products on them, often times not – but they ask what YOU think. And it just creates what we call brand retention. If someone is exposed to something repeatedly, they're more inclined to remember it. They're more inclined to mention it to someone else. And therein lies the wonderful world of bullshit in marketing. We say "Oh, you need to advertise here, here and here, to raise brand retention levels"...Subtract the spin and it's pretty obvious.

But to answer your question: appeal to the human desire of sharing, if you aren't already. Ask or initiate participation, rather say "BUY THIS!" or "Visit my store!".

I do have experience with that. I don't see it as a fad. I just see it as a distribution channel. It's no different than placing ads with Google, or on other websites, really. There is tremendous value with it in terms of target marketing and that's why I don't see it as a fad. If their user numbers drop, it still remains a great way to advertise based on percentages.

From my experience, the only ethics that we deal with are in regard to messaging. If it's potentially offensive to a demo or race, we try to disseminate that as the campaign is developed. Focus groups help drive those decisions. But if the data says parents buy X amount of dollars in sugary Poo Poo Puffs for their kids under age 8, you can damn well bet that the campaigns are targeted to kids under 8.

[Wired] You may already be losing job interviews and offers thanks to Klout, an automatically-opt-in service that ranks your social media influence (your "Klout score") and makes that information available to would-be employers for free. (x-post from r/news) by jleonardbcin technology

Marketing Manager here. I can confirm this. We basically throw shit at the wall and hope that you eat whatever falls on the floor. Then we say it's scientifically and psychologically designed to make you want to eat it. I lay in bed at night and realize that this is what my career choice was, and I imagine myself sitting in a theater, alone, watching The Beach.

Edit. My Klout score is 59

As a disabled Vet, thank you for actively helping guys like us out. Laughter really is the best medicine. Super Troopers is, without question, the greatest movie of all-time. And the fact that it has a brown 911 in it makes it even better, IMO.
