Heading to Dallas for the weekend and have a question about the Zoo and Aquarium! by Fritoontheradioin Dallas

The comments and reviews here are from four years ago. Does not include any comments about the new addition of the "Giants of the Savanna" at the Dallas Zoo in Spring 2010, a $30 million dollar improvement. So keep that in mind.

I will add that in Dallas there is a DART rail that goes all around Dallas. You can park at one of the stations and ride the DART rail to the Dallas Zoo, Dallas Fair Park (Museums are here), and the Dallas World Aquarium. The DART rail stops right in front of the gate at the Dallas Zoo and Dallas Fair Park. To get to the Dallas World Aquarium, get off at the West End station. It is about 1 or 2 block walk. You can park at the Mockingbird station or any of the other stations, pay $4 for a day pass. It will save you about $5-$10 each in parking fees if you park at the Dallas Zoo, Fair Park, or Dallas World Aquarium. Maybe not much savings, but nice that you can ride the rail, not worry about directions or traffic, and that it stops directly in front of the gate at several of these places. You can do a half day at one place, ride rail, and do half a day at another place.

No one mentioned what Dallas Fair Park has to offer. There is multiple museums there. There is the Dallas Museum of Natural History, The Science Place, and Dallas Children's Museum. Three different buildings - Nature Building, Science Building, and Planetarium. Also, there is the African American Museum, Texas Discovery Gardens, as well as the Children's Aquarium.

Dallas Zoo just added a "Giants of the Savanna", a $30 million dollar addition in Spring of 2010. It adds a naturalistic landscape with giraffes, elephants, ostriches, zebras, warthogs, and other animals all together in the same enclosure. They even have feeding times several times a day in which you can stand head level on a bridge to hand feed lettuce leafs to the giraffes. They will even let children pet the giraffes. A very nice improvement to this zoo. Do a search for "Giants of the Savanna" and see for yourself if this is something you would like to see. Ft. Worth Zoo is nice and nicer than the older part of the Dallas Zoo. But the new "Giants of the Savanna" of the Dallas Zoo is nice too.

I have been to the aquarium at Grapevine Mall. It is small and will take you only about one to two hours to go through depending on how quickly you walk through it. Feels like a place for a kids' birthday party as it is right next door to Legoland. Go to the Dallas World Aquarium, it is much bigger and nicer. You will like the rainforest experience with the waterfall at the Dallas World Aquarium.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas, about an hour drive Southwest of Ft. Worth, is another place I would recommend if you like the safari type experience. You can drive through with your own vehicle or take tours on open-air vehicles to view wildebeasts, addoxs, gazelles, blackbucks, waterbucks, antelopes, bongos, rhinos, and other animals. They offer different types of tours and different prices and a cup of feed to feed the animals.

There is a big cat sanctuary in Bridgeport, Texas called "CARE" - Center for Animal Research and Education. About an hour drive Northwest of Ft. Worth. They have about 50 tigers, white tigers, lions, leopards, snow leopards, and other big cats. You get to walk right up next to their enclosures, standing just a foot in front of them. If you decide to go to this, take a bag of thawed chicken legs and kitchen tongs. They will let you hand feed most all of the big cats by poking the chicken legs through the fences using kitchen tongs. No cost to go see this. Donations only. Allow visitors on Saturday and Sunday only. Last time I went was several months ago when they had a 9 weeks old baby lion that was born there. I got to hold the baby lion briefly. Probably about 16-18 weeks old now. Not sure if they will still let you hold him at this age. They don't sell drinks or food there. So bring bottled water or other type of drinks.

Re: Replacement of Mouse Balls.

If a mouse fails to operate or should it perform erratically, it may need a ball replacement. Mouse balls are now available as FRU (Field Replacement Units). Because of the delicate nature of this procedure, replacement of mouse balls should only be attempted by properly trained personnel. Before proceeding, determine the type of mouse balls by examining the underside of the mouse. Domestic balls will be larger and harder than foreign balls. Ball removal procedures differ depending upon the manufacturer of the mouse. Foreign balls can be replaced using the pop off method. Domestic balls are replaced by using the twist-off method. Mouse balls are not usually static sensitive. However, excessive handling can result in sudden discharge. Upon completion of ball replacement, the mouse may be used immediately. It is recommended that each replacer have a pair of spare balls for maintaining optimum customer satisfaction. Any customer missing his balls should suspect local personnel of removing these necessary items.

My favorite are those that think putting files in the "Trash" automatically deletes the files. I once looked at a computer because someone said they were getting an error message that the hard drive was full. So I checked it out and discovered over 300,000 files in her trash can, from documents, images, applications, everything imaginable. I did "Empty Trash" and she now have plenty of hard drive space.

A friend mentioned to me that the screen on her laptop wasn't working anymore and she needed to have it fixed or get a new one. She showed me her laptop and the screen was nearly completely dark. I hit the increase brightness key on her laptop keyboard and increased the brightness. Apparently, she had accidentally hit the decrease brightness key.

Most all slot machines are electronic now with a computer screen rather than old mechanical slots that used springs and tensions to determine where the reels would stop. The new electronic machines use a much more sophisticated electronic method from a complex computer program to determine the values that the reels should have.

Flight attendants, have you ever caught passengers performing sexual acts on the plane? What are some of your craziest/funniest stories? by Wolverine9in AskReddit

[–]Herschey 4 points5 points ago

I was on a flight on a half filled plane, this was in the early 90s, in which a man and a woman were in their assigned seats got up and moved to empty seats in the back of the plane. Both had some to drink but not necessarily drunk out of their minds drunk. He had taken his pants off and put it down on the floor next to him. She sat down on top of him and proceeded to have sex. When they were going at it, a flight attendant walked by and picked up his pants without them knowing. By the time we landed, the guy had himself covered and wrapped with a blanket around his waist and walked off the plane to greet his wife at the gate. The first thing his wife asked him was, "Honey, what happened to your pants?"

r/deaf, have any of you flown alone before? by jeangenie18in deaf

[–]Herschey 2 points3 points ago

I do it all the time, including international flights. My biggest worry is being at the gate and having them change gates. Example, I'm at gate C4 waiting for my flight and they announce over the speakers that it has been moved to gate C32 or something. I have missed a flight one time because I didn't know they switched gates. It wasn't until it was nearly time to board that I found out that I needed to be at another gate. But by the time I found out, I couldn't get to the other gate in time to make my flight. My mistake was not watching the screen. So I would check the screen from time to time to make share the gates or time of departure have not changed. When I did miss my flight after the gates were changed, the airline was very nice about it. They put me on the next available flight in first class.

As for going through security. I have never needed to take my hearing aids off (I am profoundly deaf and wear hearing aids behind the ear) to go through the metal detectors or screeners. The hearing aids have never set the metal detectors or screeners off. So you can leave them on as you go through.

What is the stupidest work policy you've ever dealt with at a job? by jumbletonin AskReddit

[–]Herschey 7 points8 points ago

I once worked for a company that had several very large meeting rooms that were only allowed for board members and VPs, about 10 people or so. They would only use these meeting rooms once or twice a month, and maybe even skip a month. The other workers who were not VPs or Board Members were only allowed to use much smaller meeting rooms in which more than half of the people had to stand crowded next to each other during the entire meeting, even up to several hours, sometimes 30-40 people. We had to do this several times a week and never understood why we were not allowed to use the bigger meeting rooms that were hardly used. But no, those rooms were only allowed for upper management (VPs and Board members).

Treating hearing loss with Aldosterone. I just started treatments 4 days ago. by Herscheyin deaf

[–]Herschey[S] 0 points1 point ago

I have been taking the Aldosterone for a little over 60 days now. I started noticing a tiny difference on day 15 of taking the Aldosterone. I could hear things clearly (as if my ears were being cleared), but not in volume. But nothing significant so far. About 10-20 dB improvements across the range of Hz. My hearing loss was mostly in the 105-115 dB hearing level range from 750-8000 Hz. Now are in the 90-100 range from 750-8000 Hz. Have 60 in 250 Hz. Doctor had asked me to continue to take the Aldosterone. Doctor had mentioned that some that have taken the Aldosterone didn't start noticing significant changes until after taking the Aldosterone for at least three months.

Anybody know a good place for dance lessons? by chatterboxbobbyin Dallas

[–]Herschey 1 point2 points ago

USA Dance Dallas have first Saturday of the month ballroom dances at Sokol Hall in Dallas on Southeast corner of Greenville Avenue and Walnut Hill Lane. They have a different dance instructor to come each month and teach one hour of group lesson and then social dancing afterwards. There is a dance May 5th. Usually a good size crowd, about 120-160 people.

Romney's Response to Obama's Order to get Osama Bin Laden. by Kida89in Conservative

[–]Herschey 0 points1 point ago

I find it funny that Obama is taking credit for ordering the Bin Laden mission and telling everyone that Romney would not have given that order. Remember, it took Obama SIXTEEN HOURS to make up his mind about Bin Laden mission. Obama "slept on it" as tense military chiefs awaited decision. Action started the next morning when Obama declared "it's a go". I think Romney should come out and point this out and say that he would have made the decision right then and given the "it's a go" instead of keeping military commanders hanging for sixteen hours.
