Another Korean IPS thread. So they are nice and worth it but.. by devanmcin gamingpc

Do you have a link for that? These are the specs for the monitor. 6ms, which is on par with most TN panels. I don't even notice a difference between my Catleap and my 2ms monitor.

Laptop video card to play Diablo 3 by Storkg17in gamingpc

[–]Helrich 3 points4 points ago

There is no way to upgrade the GPU, CPU, or Mobo. There are some external solutions, but you would need one that runs through PCMCIA, which has terrible bandwidth in the first place, not to mention that these solutions would cost almost as much as a new laptop anyways.

edit: found this link for you. If you're handy with electronics and that sort of thing, you can make your own expresscard adapter for under $100 (plus the cost of a graphics card), but the maximum bandwidth of expresscard is PCI express x4, which in my opinion isn't worth the time or money.

Going to go with a 3D monitor next month and was looking at a 27" AUSU any one have any experience? by Magical_Hippyin gamingpc

[–]Helrich 1 point2 points ago

Yes. You pretty much have to be sitting in a dark room to see it properly, and even then, it's quite dim.

[–]Helrich 2 points3 points ago

Yeah, I have it turned all the way down, so it's barely 3D at all. I really like running games at 120Hz though, so it's still definitely worth it.

I have the 24 inch version of this, with 3d Vision 1. It is a very good monitor. Not a huge fan of the 3D though, it gives me headaches.

What is the quality of the hyper-threading in the i3-2120? Or is a 2500k ultimately better? by ValcainHDin gamingpc

[–]Helrich 2 points3 points ago

I have a quad-core i5 2500k as well as a dual-core + HT i3 2100. If I run both at the same clock, there is absolutely, without a doubt, a noticeable difference in performance. So much so that even taking into consideration different cache sizes etc aren't the primary cause.

Using a CPU with less than 4 physical cores in your main rig is really not advised in this day and age.

How is AMD GPU support in Linux lately? by oursin linuxquestions

[–]Helrich 0 points1 point ago

I've been hacking away for two days trying to get the beta drivers to work, mainly for the fixed EDID parsing (it fails to parse my native resolution of 2560x1440 and just sets it to 640x480). The closest I've gotten is by upgrading my kernel to 3.4rc5, patching the beta driver, getting the newest x server, just to be greeted by a blank screen after rebooting. Is there some magical way to install the beta driver? Tried on Ubuntu 12.04 as well as Fedora 16. No dice.

build a home server from scratch? by Shoegoo22in hardware

[–]Helrich 1 point2 points ago

From your description, it seems like the following is your ranking of needs for the machine:

  1. Lots of storage

  2. Able to stream hi-def (I'm assuming 1080p) to television

  3. Economical (in size, power draw, and noise)

Here's my recommendation:

Form factor - Micro ATX

CPU and Chipset - AMD's Trinity is almost here, and that would definitely your best choice. It is an APU, so the CPU and a GPU more than able to stream hi-def is in one chip. Power draw is miniscule as well. HIGHLY recommended. Elsewise, you're looking at a Sandy Bridge or Ivy Bridge low power CPU (SKU ending in S or T) and an Hxx or Zxx series chipset, utilizing onboard graphics, which should be enough for 1080p.

Memory - 8GB of DDR3 is very affordable these days, and should be more than enough for your purposes.

Case - Really any Micro-ATX tower that has enough hard drive bays to meet your needs. You want to keep the case as small as possible to make cooling your machine easier. For an APU build, you need probably one intake fan at least 120mm in size. Get a fan that is quiet. You could consider replacing the stock heat sink and fan that will come with your CPU as well, with perhaps a passive heatsink.

Hard Drives - Prices are beginning to drop, and I would recommend getting the highest capacity drives you can find. Not sure how much you'll be storing, but it's always better to have a few big drives rather than a bunch of small ones. RAID 1 is an option, but since the data is mirrored, it basically cuts your total storage capacity in half.

OS - Ubuntu Server would be a good choice. Windows server would get the job done, but costs money. In my opinion, GNU/Linux operating systems are much better in a server environment.

That's about it. Please hit me up with any questions.

1920x1200 Gaming vs. 2560x1440 Gaming by bbbbaconstripsin pcgaming

[–]Helrich 7 points8 points ago

I went from 1920x1200 to one of the korean 1440p panels, and really the only thing great about it is the fact it's IPS. Of course the higher resolution is better, in fact at 27" it is about as high def as probably a 21-22" 1080p monitor, but 1440p is definitely more demanding. I'm just about at 60-70 fps in BF3 on ultra with no AA using 2 GTX 580s.

Even with the high resolution, I still prefer my 16:10 monitor for just about everything. My ideal monitor would be a 1920x1200 IPS panel.

Anyways, my two cents.

Interesting. The syntax is very similar to lex/flex, which is what I used for my compiler. I wonder how nicely it would play with a bison parser though.

You could make your own stethoscope to try and pinpoint where the whine is originating, but like Canarka said, typically its benign. I've never heard of a whine coming from the motherboard (aside from ESI through headphones) so it might be something else.

[repair] Need help identifying a capacitor by Helrichin AskElectronics

The pic of the metal can surface-mount is almost exactly what my blown cap looks like. I ordered a Nichicon cap from Newark that has the same dimensions and ratings as the blown one. It is indeed low impedance.

Ah, very good. Thank you! I've got a fresh set of Nichicons on the way :)

There was another cap that was looking iffy so I decided to replace it while I'm in the neighborhood. Both were made by a company called KMG, which I've never heard of before. Thanks again!
