True, but there is not only 1 game per year. There is another one in about 3 weeks, and another one again 3ish weeks after it. 3 games in the series.

Now that it is Tuesday morning I have an honest question... by HawkieEyesin Christianity

[–]HawkieEyes[S] 0 points1 point ago

To be honest, I have no idea if you have explained it correctly or not, as my understanding on theses matters is not the greatest. Physics was not a subject I took in highschool, though I did enjoy Chemistry.

I think my understanding of the theory was that because time is not constant, the universe and the earth could have been created at the same time, however the earth could be 6000ish years old, and the universe might be 15ish billion years old?

Good, good. I think that being in these kind of situations are very good for personal growth. They are usually situations you don't want to be in :)

I have one of my own at the moment, hopefully I use it to grow.

Off topic, how are SL going? I haven't been in /r/Cricket much lately

Mystery prostitute 'identifies' Thomson {The Age} - so the question is: truth, not truth and how do we tell? by ftjlsterin australia

so the question is: truth, not truth and how do we tell?

It is quite simple really. You take his tax file number, devide it by his date of birth, add his credit card number, and then subtract his street number. If the result is an number, then he is guilty, and must be burnt at the stake.

I cam from SEQ, but I moved north to CQ. I didn't know there was a Seventh Day Adventist's territory.

Sorry, I probably didn't explain myself. When I said "on the lower end of the scale though" I was meaning that it wasn't as life-encompasingly prevalent as a religious indoctrination.

Religion is a way of life, and it is everything. "Pro-choice or Pro-Life" is merely a sub-topic.

Indeed, it is not indoctrination to the same extent, but it still can be indoctrination. It really depends on how it is done. I think that "Pro life or pro choice" is on the lower end of the scale though.

Indeed, as it is with any form of indoctrination. This is why certain movements are more prevalent in younger people.

My kids (both girl and boy) have been using that word since not long after then learnt how to talk.

Indoctrination is indoctrination regardless of the side of the coin. Be it:

  • Religious or irreligious
  • Pro environment movement or anti environment movement
  • Pro life or pro choice
  • Left or right
  • Cockroach or Cain toad (sorry, couldn't help myself there with that inside joke).

My point is, it is not just the religious that indoctrinate children.

A question on the fundamentals of tithing. by jcar128in Christianity

[–]HawkieEyes 0 points1 point ago

His name is Shane Willard, this is the series I am talking about. I strongly suggest that if you get your hands on it, take a while to digest it, and definitely do some research for yourself.

I have not finished checking up on it myself, especially in relation to the second tithe. However this should be what you do for every thing you hear, Acts 17:11

Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.

Go Queensland!

Though I do worry a little that Qld are favourites to win. Qld usually prefers to be the underdog, and be given no chance of winning.

A question on the fundamentals of tithing. by jcar128in Christianity

[–]HawkieEyes 1 point2 points ago

Hey. I have recently listened to a CD message series on money and tithing, and I have been looking into the issue myself recently.

A brief overview of what he said is that there is more than just the tithe that we in the church give today.

To start off, there is the first fruits offering. This was typically 1/60-th to 1/40th of the overall harvest. He said that this was the most important offering, and it was given to the priests.

Next was the first tithe, which we are all familiar with.

Next was the second tithe. I am a little confused about this one. It was done 4 out of every 7 years. I think it was like a big party slush fund. People used this tithe in Jerusalem for their feasts and festivals. The person doing the preaching said that the left overs would get saved away for your future (I am unsure about this part).

Next was the poor tithe. This one was done 2 out of 7 years. It was for poor people, and widows and orphans.

After that comes just general generosity to whoever.

I have decided I am going to try a facsimile of the above for the coming financial year (July-June) and see what happens. As I am stretching it financially as it is, I am going to sort of pro rata those amounts down to a percentage equalling what I currently give, and work my way up each quarter (or at least try to!).

Now that I have gotten all of that out of the way, there is another thing that the preacher said. All of the above is all about God's best plan for our life, and should be done our of a desire to please God, not out of a desire to follow the law.

There is no right or wrong answer to your question really. Pray to God. Do not feel condemnation for doing it, after there is a poor tithe, which is just as important as the normal tithe.

I think this verse sums it up nicely: 2 Cor 9:7

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

TL;DR Pastor at my beloved church says that same-sex marriage doesn't work in Christianity.

I kinda have to agree with your pastor that it doesn't work in Christianity. I have a weird position on this topic. I am definitely not pro gay marriage, however I am also not anti gay marriage.

I am not a supporter of it because as a Christian I can see it is a sin, in the same way that I am not a supporter of many of the sins I commit on a daily basis.

I am also not against it because I cannot see how it is my business as a Christian to try to enforce this on the general population. God wants people to follow His way because we desire to, not because we are being forced to.

As others have said, you are never going to find a perfect church with a perfect pastor, who you 100% agree with on every matter. I think maybe pray about it, if you want to, bring the topic up with him.

I think if it is something that is important enough to you, that you are unable to let it go (i.e. it is something that consumes a significant amount of your thought processes), then it may be even more important for you to talk to him about it.

One final thing I will add is that is it important to be planted in a church. A tree that is planted in good soil will do better than one that is in a pot, or one that is constantly being transplanted. I have seen many Christians leave a church for very petty reasons (I am not saying that this is one), and it saddens me. This kind of thing can often be character building.

Good luck! I'll be praying for you!

Good, good. How then do you define 100%? I define it as, well all, everything, the whole entirety.

The major storys in the bible does not equal 100% of the bible. I stand by my original claim, that no reasonable or sane person takes the bible 100% literally.

Some just interpret it more literally than others
