Do you guys use Treasury Direct.com? by PleaseTakeThisin personalfinance

I haven't heard of any security concerns about the site.

You might want to wait until next week (May 1) for the next semiannual rate change, though. It's expected to go down.

You say you're not from America and imply English is a second language, your picture doesn't look Japanese...I'm guessing #25 or #30?

If you're paying fees for your IRA, you're doing it wrong. Plenty of companies don't have annual fees or purchase fees on many funds, among them Sharebuilder and Vanguard.

And...I also strive for a sad, passionless, financially sound retirement.

What's the most hurtful thing a teacher has said to you? (intentional or not) by TheGrandWarlockin AskReddit

[–]Gigiya 1 point2 points ago

Not necessarily hurtful, but insulting.

I dropped out of high school after tenth grade and got my GED. I started college early at a local school that, while a satellite campus of a large state university, had a bit of a reputation for being a glorified community college. High school with ash trays was a common description.

My professor in my English Comp 2 class was rather snobbish. He also taught at a larger, more prestigious university but for some reason was also part-time at my school. One day in class, he was asking where everyone went to high school. When he asked me, I told him I dropped out, and he said plainly, "Well what are you doing here?" He definitely wasn't joking.

Besides being rude, it was like he didn't recognize where he was...the school accepted pretty much anyone and much of the student body were non-traditional students.

How are all you US twentysomethings earning such high salaries? by BoogieBotin personalfinance

[–]Gigiya 1 point2 points ago

That varies pretty wildly. The few other IT people I have worked with so far have different backgrounds: CS degree, self-taught with no degree, self-taught but with a degree unrelated to IT, self-taught but got a CS degree well into their career. These were mostly developers so I'm not sure how relevant that is to, say, networking, as certifications for example aren't especially valuable for developers.

24 here:

  1. I do IT work (mostly development, varied other roles, title IT Manager) for a healthcare revenue recovery company. Small company, I was the only IT person until a recent hire of a senior developer.
  2. Studied computer & information technology, so pretty relevant studies.
  3. I did a service learning project in my last year of school; there was an article in the local paper about it. Owners of a local company saw the article and called my professor, ultimately wound up with the job through that.
  4. 71k/year. Maybe a third of my income goes to expenses, no debt.
  5. Florida.

Savings accounts and Credit Unions Question by BitterVeganin personalfinance

[–]Gigiya 1 point2 points ago

I went for a similar deal with a local credit union last year for Bank Transfer Day.

I have had no problems with the credit union or meeting the monthly requirements, but I did close my account at Chase to use it as my only checking account. I moved my emergency fund from ING to my account. My credit union has since lowered the rate from 3% to 2.75%, and I personally find it a little annoying not keeping my checking funds separate from my savings.

I'm not sure screwing around with remembering to use a different card on X amount of small purchases a month would be worth the 2.24% extra interest, as someone else pointed out.

Exercising while watching TV/playing games by 10poolisecobuildin loseit

[–]Gigiya 1 point2 points ago

I am/was in a pretty similar boat (24, somewhat overweight, no muscle) and wanting to lose a bit of weight/get in shape. I'm also pretty lazy and personally find exercise to be extremely boring, so I doubted I could get myself to go to a gym or anything.

So I bought an exercise bike 3 months ago and have got myself into the routine of doing 20 miles/~60 minutes a day, right in front of my TV, usually also while playing something on my phone or tablet.

I tend to push myself a little harder when I have music playing and no active distractions like these, but they make it go by SO much quicker. And the exercise is still effective, I've lost 22 pounds since I got it. I find it much easier to stick to a daily routine when I have something to do that I actually enjoy while exercising.

I think I want to break up with my GF but I still want her in my life as a friend. How do I do this? (first time I've broken up with someone). by JokeyMcJokemakerin relationships

[–]Gigiya 103 points104 points ago

If you want to do it in the nicest possible way, you'll have to realize that it probably won't be fair to her to try to keep her around as a friend too soon after you break up, if ever.

Suggestions for e-filing Tax software/site? by nilloc_31415in personalfinance

[–]Gigiya 2 points3 points ago

Tax Act offers free federal with $15 state. I used them for my 2006 through 2009 returns without any issues.

The state the credit union is in shouldn't matter, so long as you weren't living in that state when you received interest. If you did live there and move during the year, you'd have to look into filing partial year state returns which is a pain and why I used Turbo Tax for my 2010 return.

AFAIK, thats the only instrument available to you to get your effective tax rate down

They don't get a lot of love compared to Roth IRAs, but Traditional IRAs do this as well.
