I have a low end PC. What games does Reddit recommend? by GeneralEchidnain gaming

[–]Gazook89 0 points1 point ago

like shorvok says, dwarf fortress is not a game for the low end computer. It is incredibly fun, but FPS becomes a huge issue with even medium sized forts, especially when liquids and temperatures are manipulated. Not to mention catsplosions.

The Great Gatsby - Official Trailer by Pigs_On_The_Wingin videos

[–]Gazook89 1 point2 points ago

I'm glad that some people remember the book well enough to pick out these things. I liked Gatsby in high school, but i know a lot of people who didn't (or just claimed to have read it when the teacher asked). It is weird to think that because dicaprio is in this film so many people will go out and buy this book before the movie comes out. instead of saying "i read all the tolkien books before the movies came out" or "i am true fan, since i read the hunger games books", kids will be pouring over the great gatsby.

While I am also concerned about the business practices of Monsanto, I want to point out that using Food Inc. as a source isn't really the greatest.

My trials in worldbuilding, cartography and conlanging: And by vorropohaiahin worldbuilding

[–]Gazook89 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, that definitely helped. I mean, I was hoping there was a real simple way to have that click-and-drag feature workout, but I suppose if you took the time to select each brush and just do each peak separately, I probably can too.

And yeah, to make my villages I just made about 6 different 'huts', and combined them onto one brush and was able to make villages. I'll do the same for ruins and such.

Thanks for responding and good luck with the cartography!

That is a pretty wicked map. I was sort of shootin for this when I started mine (posted yesterday or the day before) but then I just started playin around with GIMP and added colors and heights and stuff. However, I do plan on doing a second version of mine and getting this old-timey look down.

One question: Did you make a mountain brush to make the mountain ranges? If so, can you give a brief description of how? My problem right now is that I want to make the mountains transparent in the inside (so if the mountain line is an upside down 'v', the part under the 'v' should be transparent so that color on the map can show through). But if I do that, when two 'v's overlap you can see one behind the other, wrecking the illusion of depth.

does that make sense? So i am looking for a way to do that.

First map using gimp or any computer program. World sliver of Ryn, more info inside. by Gazook89in worldbuilding

[–]Gazook89[S] 0 points1 point ago

Yeah those are the first few trade routes. As I continue work on it, I've sort of turned it into a map a trader might use as a general map, without too much complexity but enough to know the big names and basic routes. I now have some more routes, and I am about to go ahead with the over land routes. Before I do that, I need to figure out a good way to depict cities, so I am experimenting with making my own brushes in Gimp.

[–]Gazook89[S] 0 points1 point ago

Well that part isn't done yet. The blank space will hold the name of the world, and the name of the cartographer. The below and inside the compass will be a compass rose, pointing out N,E,S,W. The image is something i found on google, which i then was able to select fairly easily, extract from it's background, and then just used a white stroke. I'm being lazy about getting the rose done, though.

I hadn't thought about using it as a measure of actual distance; that is a very good idea.

If a watershed is large enough (such as the case here), there is enough rainfall to keep a lake filled. Especially if there is damming, either natural or artificial. Natural springs are another source of water. Perhaps it would be more clear if I put every tributary on the map, but I only wanted to show the larger and more consequential rivers.

Or, in the case of a few lakes in the map, the lakes are indeed at the same altitude as the ocean.

I will try your advice about the bump maps. I haven't used those much but I'll just screw around.

As far as layers, my problem is usually too many layers. When i made the rivers they were all individual layers (They still are, but I put them into a folder). But everything is separate cause I hate having to go back.

And yeah, I didn't really expect to do this much with the map when i started. I didn't start the map the large enough and now I'm really kickin myself cause of it. I'm starting to add place names, and the text is just gonna have to be a bit blurry. It is a problem of bad foresight and little to no plan.

Didn't take lots of time; it took me maybe 3 hours. I got the idea from another post on this subreddit awhile ago. I started with a blank page, and then rendered clouds using the filters in GIMP (there is a photoshop filter that does the same, too). Then I played with the levels and curves in the color menu to darken and lighten certain parts. I selected a portion of the clouds that I wanted to work with, and then using more of the color options I was able to isolate parts in such a way that I got islands. Using the wand select tool I selected the 'ocean' parts that were all black at that point and deleted them, and I was left with islands that looked pretty much like a heightmap (hills and valleys). I have a bunch of layers for the colors (green and brown for the base, darker green for forests, red for certain mountain ranges) that I have overlayed over the base layer.

The small images are pretty much the same thing; images that i added as new layers and set to overlay with a bit of transparency and blending.

The rivers i just added where I thought they made sense, and I did those with the brush tool. The sea routes I made using the pen tool and then adding a dotted stroke.

So now i've done the parts that are, to me, pretty easy. Now I am experimenting with how to show towns, mountains, and that kind of thing. I have no experience making custom brushes, and only a little experience making fonts.

yeah, that seems very likely. It may also be a factor of how much competition there is for food. Like sharks in a fish aquarium. If they know they are going to be getting plenty of food then there is no problem.

I found this subreddit this last winter but left my computer at my parents house for the semester. I made some maps with color pencils and stuff, but I couldn't wait to get back to try out GIMP for making maps. I've used GIMP and photoshop a bit before, but not much for making stuff from scratch. The small images used on the map are images found on Google, and I didn't keep the proper sources, so I feel kinda bad about that.

Here is the text from a notepad file i am keeping to place thoughts on the world.

"World History for Map

The 'world' is flat, but with a slight curve as if part of a sphere that has been cut. at the edges there is a sheer drop, where water falls to an abyss and land stops abruptly. The 'world' is part of a larger world that is a collective of these pieces.

Little islands (the tiny ones made of a few pixels) are homes to the most powerful wizards who conjure up land from the ocean.

The land to the bottom right is sparsely populated, very mountainous, and dry. The inhabitants and men with wings, who do not speak much due to rigorous living conditions that require lots of energy.

The land in the bottom center is a fractured kingdom of secretive elves that would have liked to remain undisturbed, but have been pressured into trading their extremely valuable crafts. They do not make contact with outsiders themselves, but have 'enslaved' other races on the island near the center to conduct their trades. They are secretly amassing a large army.

The landmass to the left is populated with dwarves and gnomes, distant relatives. The dwarves live in the rocky area, and control the land bridge to the one of two land endings on the edge of the world. the gnomes harvest crops in the lowlands near the coasts. They are mischevious, and proud, and their race is highly fractional and kingdoms are very fluid.

the 'nice' elves live on the northern landmass, mostly along the coasts and in the jungle. They consider themselves the eminent race, with a large port city on the southern peninsula, Ryn Duhle. in the mountains and above, the land is mysterious and changing, and is said to be the location of the Beginning, where every race can trace its roots if they dare.

Below the world, underneath, a few demons reside. Suspended below, the pantheon of the gods is rumored to be empty except for one, who is either trying to avoid the rest of the gods (and their slivers of the world) or is looking dutifully for the others (i haven't decided yet)."

The map is quite large, and I was thinking that a few pixels (3x3ish) is a good size village. There is one huge federation of cities in the peninsula near the center of the map, with the routes stemming from it. Also, it is incomplete. I was just excited about it and wanted to share.

Well, the dad understands the allure. I know my crotchety old cat still goes after his own tail.

However, I have always been under the impression that adult male cats don't enjoy kittens much, and eventually kill them (competition and territory and whatnot). Maybe that is just barnyard cats.

Finally I have a picture. What is this boat? by Gazook89in sailing

[–]Gazook89[S] 0 points1 point ago

I don't have a lot of experience on other boats, and I have only sailed this about 15 times (stupid mn winter). But I love sailing it with my buddy and getting on and off in the lake (trading spots).

The board is probably 3ft below the water line, but I'm bad at distances. The boat is 13ft according to my dad and our license.

As for weight..my friend and I can lift it easily when we throw it on top of my car.

Sorry I don't have details. I only just convinced my dad to take it out the garage where it has been sitting for my whole life and longer. But I love sailing it and I woke up every morning through the winter and saying "is it spring yet?"

Here are a few more. My grandpa bought it from a magazine in the 60's according to my dad, who helped him assemble it. It came as a kit. My dad doesn't remember really anything about, but he is positive it is not a sailfish or sunfish. Also, they lived in Sheridan, Illinois at the time, but he also thinks the boat was shipped from Minnesota. The only mark on it is the black boomerang shape on the sail.

Maybe don't sell it if you are at worried about lawsuits from the makers of risk or Bethesda.

oop, you are right. I didn't watch the linked video. Also, the pupils aren't shaped quite right for a cuttlefish. But anyway, cuttlefish are awesome.

i'm surprised this hasn't already been said, but this is not an octopus. It is a Cuttlefish, which has a cuttlebone (which octopuses do not have). They are absolutely awesome creatures found all over the world except the americas. If you want to learn more, check out "Kings of Camouflage", a PBS special.
