The Kiln is the best option of course, but if that's not available try the bonfire before the Crest of Artorias door in the forest. I used to get some action there, but it's been a while since I tried.

I use Havel's Shield L2 in PVP sometimes. It doesn't reduce damage by much (if any), but a lot of weapons will bounce right off of you (as if they hit a shield) leaving you with an open shot.

Its magic adjustment is the same as the sorcerers catalyst. The only thing that sets it apart is that its attack does fire damage (with a shitty/slow animation). It's nothing special at all, so don't worry about it.

I use a Demon Great Axe +15 on my strength build, as well as a Fire Greatsword +10. Both are pretty great. If you're going to enough strength for the axe, you might as well use the machete and hammer too.

I think quite a few Dex builds use the painting guardian sword. It has great scaling and a very unusual moveset.

The moveset for the small hammers (pickaxe) and small axes (Butcher's knife) seems like it would be horrible, though I've never really given them a full try.

You may have another problem as well. The first time I got to Anor Londo I turned around right away too. I never got the trophy for reaching Anor Londo, even after going back into it. I had to wait until NG+ to get that trophy.
