American here, im currently deployed in Afghanistan but I would really like to visit London for my 2 week leave. Any reccomendations as to what I should do? by Dbfutralin london

The Hunterian and the Tate are very good shouts, fitzroy_doll. Highly recommended. There's also the opportunity to walk from St. Paul's down to the Tate, then through past the Golden Hind to Borough Market and get a drink at the Rake.

Dbfutrai, I concur with fitzroy_doll: the Flask in Highgate is actually really great for an evening meal or, if the weather permits, a nice drink in their expansive beer garden. And if you like a pub quiz, the Tuesday night at the Prince of Wales is often cited as the most challenging & enjoyable in the city / country / world (depending on who you believe). Plus it has a very nice atmosphere and friendly clientele.

If you like the history, the first recommendations have to be the British Museum and John Soanes' museum. The BM is completely stuffed with incredible pieces of history, and Soane's is a great way to spend a couple of hours.

(special bonus tip:) There's also a good day's worth of stuff up here in North London that I did with my parents when they came to visit and worked out really well:

  • Start off by visiting Highgate Cemetery. It's an historic cemetery full of many famous burials and massively interesting sculpture set in gorgeous woodland. I've linked to the page that has tour information - it's well worth it.

  • Head up the hill into Highgate itself and get yourself some lunch at one of the pubs up there. The Angel does a good roast & has a good selection of british ale and european weiss bier.

  • Wander through Highgate (it's a lovely area full of interesting houses) to the north of Hampstead Heath. Walk off that big lunch.

  • Have a gander round the Heath (great views over London, a lovely open green space), then head over to Kenwood House. That link's currently broken, but hopefully it'll work by the time you come to check it out. The House is a gorgeous old stately home full of art and old paintings of the area as it was at the time. It's a great way to spend a couple of hours, if you like that sort of thing.

  • Wander back down through the Heath towards Hampstead to find yourself somewhere for dinner. There are a bunch of restaurants and pubs with good food around there, but my choice would be The Garden Gate.

  • Finally (yes, all my favourite places are pubs), head back past the Heath to the east and find The Southampton Arms. It's my absolute favourite pub, and it's a great place to spend an evening.

As with all things, YMMV, but I had a great day doing all that stuff! Hope you have a great trip, man.

Used to be my favourite sorrow-drowning venue. Hasn't it closed down now?

Dr. Maxine Myers = Holly Flax? by DiarrheaPocketin Runner5

[–]GameCatW 3 points4 points ago

Sorry, but definitely not the same actor.

Dr Myers is played by the rather wonderful Sally Orrock.

The full credits for the game can be found in the settings tab, in case you want to give the rest of the cast (or crew) some love!

Came here to say this - Uplink was a fantastic introduction to the HL universe. I remember being actually surprised when I played the full game and never got to the tutorial section from Uplink. There I was, suiting up for the first time as Gordon, going "nope! I am not trained for this!"... added a whole different layer to what was happening.

Reddit, what is a concept that despite all explanation you simply cannot grasp? by CUCUMB3Rin AskReddit

Be warned: Dennett is mind-blowing in a good way, but that is also a way that will make you wander round with a glazed look on your face for a few days, trying to hear yourself thinking. It will make your brain hurt.

Enjoy!

Fringe now a "sure thing" for renewal according to TVLine. by nshadyin fringe

I love that it's gone from "Long-shot" through "Could Go Either Way" & "A Safe Bet" to "A Sure Thing" in about 2 months. Such great news.

That's a very good point.

The Beacon (Season 1 & 4 Spoilers) by othinn365in fringe

[–]GameCatW 1 point2 points ago

That's a good point. I guess the way I'm looking at it is more that Peter did free September, therefore September made sure Peter existed in order to (pay him back/ensure that happened/whatever) - in my head, Peter freeing September could be the first thing in the chain of cause and effect, rather than the last. I'm not really sure why I got that sense, I just did. [wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey-handwave]

Hookup. Should I get tested? What's protocol? by onlykhlavkalashin bisexual

[–]GameCatW 4 points5 points ago

Definitely this. It's easy to put it off out of fear or embarrassment, but it's always worth it for the peace of mind. Being able to say "I'm clean" and know it's true is priceless.

[–]GameCatW 3 points4 points ago

I think that's a great theory - that all the beacons are September's beacon. Also, potentially, I think that the reason for September's fixation with saving Peter could be to repay Peter's releasing September; for Peter that happened after September's multiple interventions, but for September it could be the other way round...

Radio hosts not talking anymore? by TigerTigerBurningin Runner5

[–]GameCatW 1 point2 points ago

No problem! We're all redditors, and it's great to talk to people playing the game. We're certainly looking into how to manage the radio content in the future, and being able to listen to old episodes is a part of that, for sure.

Thanks so much! It was a heck of a lot of fun to write. I've done some other writing on the game, including item descriptions in the codex and some other stuff we haven't released yet. The game's main storyline missions are all the work of the amazing Naomi Alderman: http://www.naomialderman.com/.

As far as I'm concerned, Jack and Eugene are most certainly together!

Thanks! It means a lot to us that people are enjoying the game so much. Hopefully the wait for more missions and radio won't be too long.

Thanks. Glad you're enjoying it!

It's definitely something we want to include at a later point, but unfortunately you can't do that just now, unless you reset your entire game progress by reinstalling the app, which probably isn't the best option!

[–]GameCatW 1 point2 points ago

Hey - glad you like the guys, and that they're helping to motivate you! You're correct in your assumption - though it can get a bit weird continuity wise, you'll always hear the next radio clip, even if you've played a different mission in the meantime - you won't miss any out. Every time the game needs a radio clip, it pulls the next one from the queue, so you'll always get to hear the full set.

Hi, radio writer here. Alas, you've come to the end of Jack & Eugene's recorded shows - Abel Minds is the last episode of Radio Abel for season one. We're working hard on getting more stuff recorded ASAP, but for now I'm afraid the boys are effectively off-air. There's some exciting stuff coming up in future episodes, though!

Day 3: The clouds are parting. by Fugi09in 5to5000

[–]GameCatW 2 points3 points ago

Thanks for the post. Glad you got your mojo back at the end of the day. Funnily enough, this is really close to what happened to me this past weekend; crashed down from $51 - $26 at 2nl after a soul-crushing two days of coolers and horrific suck-outs, every time I'd come back from a break it'd just be the same again. So I'm taking a couple of days off to avoid tilt. It's great to read these posts and see someone else in a similar situation - helps me keep my head together!

Hey R/poker. Would you call or fold in this spot? by NineFeetUndergroundin poker

[–]GameCatW 0 points1 point ago

against KK+, TT does better than QQ and in fact the best pair to have - besides another AA or KK of course - is 66.

This is really interesting - Would you mind explaining why? The only thing I can think of is that you're avoiding overlapping straights, but I'm not sure that's right.

Ah, ok, cool. Thanks for the clarification. I hadn't thought of it that way before.

Ha! Sorry for making assumptions, then. I've only played about 5 live tourneys and every time I make a final table I still get a bit jittery, so I guess I was just looking for an excuse to relate!

I can definitely see how his table image would influence your idea of his range. It might well have been that you're looking more at a flip, but he's still probably going to have A10s, AJo+ in his range, which would probably tip it over the line.

I totally get your AK-phobia. It's one of those things I have where I have to keep telling myself not to be results oriented or let myself be ruled by confirmation bias.

On a totally unrelated note, I'm really glad the discussion on this has generally been constructive and thoughtful - it's definitely more interesting and supportive!
