The thousand yard stare is a myth. I sometimes have a "thousand yard stare" when I'm mentally fatigued and daydreaming. You're just interpreting it as such when you see it in a soldier or veteran, falling victim to confirmation bias.

Society likes to believe it can not only detect the physical scars, but also the emotional ones, in its soldiers - however, this is sadly not so easy.

Not necessarily too stupid - sometimes government intevention is necessary because people are "too rational", i.e. only willing to pay for what directly concerns themselves.

In markets where externalities exist, like pollution in the energy market, government intervention seems inherently necessary. Subsidies on cleaner energy forms, or taxes on fossil fuels - the revenues of those taxes can then be used to clean the environment. At least in theory.

A picture on the internet where you're raising your middle fingers to the camera, if real, is certainly rude, and does make you look like a thug in all "Western" cultures. The fact that this is an American courtroom with an American jury, pictures like these will definitely lead to Martin being pigeon-holed as a troublemaker or as someone with an attitude.
