Commenter tells me I should leave Sherlock "to those of us who understand it". Just a coincidence that he thinks he's talking to a woman? by Websterianin feminisms

[–]FreakCERS 0 points1 point ago

There is a difference because one is a courteous way of saying it, and one isn't. Had he said "Well, obviously he is unqualified to do these reviews, having made such an egregious error about minor plot point X.", the exact same distinction had still been true.

It couldn't possibly just mean that he doesn't think you get it?

I've never used ones in a laundromat, but of all the front loaders I've used in my life, none have ever started automatically when you closed to door (unless you had opened the door while it was already running)

Also, if they locked at all, it was only when a sensor told it the water level was high enough for it to reach the door level.

I'm having a lot of trouble understanding what you mean by the title - could you possibly rephrase it? (I know you can't edit it, but just in a comment reply to this)

For every acceptably looking picture of me, there are many more where I look exceptionally derpy. For some reason my youngest brother has a very good track record of taking good pictures of me, compared to everyone else - maybe I should visit him more often :-P

Mom gets 20 YEARS IN PRISON for firing warning shots at her husband who was about to beat her. by cgreer00in WTF

[–]FreakCERS 2 points3 points ago

According to the judge, under state law, that is the minimum sentence the law permits for that conviction. If that is factually incorrect, then you might have an argument.

[–]FreakCERS 0 points1 point ago

not in that state probably - at least, according to the judge, state law did not leave any room for a lesser sentence because a gun was used.

And it was decided that that does not count when you willingly enter the building where the person you are supposedly scared of is located. She could have easily called the cops instead - especially if she had such a protective order.

Basically, by picking up a gun and re-entering the house, she is forcing the altercation. Then firing the gun in the direction of kids isn't especially clever either - not likely to win you many sympathy points on a jury...

If you actually read the backstory, you'll see that OP's title is quite sensationalist.

The man caught the woman texting with her ex husband which made him mad. She fled the house successfully, but chose to re-enter it with a gun. She then fired said gun in the direction of a room containing two kids.

Makes for very easy points for all the other teams in the league - just find the best girl in your school and put her on the team. If she's good enough to play in general - great (although I guess she should have already been there in the first place then) - if not, only put her on when playing them.

Alright, Reddit: I just punched a blind guy for being intolerably rude to my significant other. What's the worst thing you've ever done, but for a good reason? by LongRod_VanHugendongin AskReddit

I'm quite sure I've changed quite a bit since I was 16 - and I'm equally sure I've gotten much better at reacting correctly to many many situations - but I really don't think I've gotten much better at actually determining right from wrong. That part I had down pretty early, and I have to say, at least seen from the outside, so does pretty much every 10 year old I've met. The difference is basically in how much I respect that distinction.

ADDENDUM:

I'll report back in 5 years and see whether I agree with you or not :P

If you actually remember that, I'll buy you a beer :-)

while it is provably true that there are instances where positive and comparatively nicer treatment will rehabilitate some criminals

It is - it's very well documented in fact - there are countless studies done on pretty much every aspects of imprisonment, including sentence length (but unsurprisingly, politicians often have other agendas than to do what works - including doing what voters think work). Denmark is know for it's tendency to collect statistics one pretty much everything - so we know for example what happens to re-offending rates when we vary the sentence lengths of various punishments. Turns out, lengthy prison terms are far worse (and more expensive, so even if they did no better or worse, they'd still be worse)

there is a more dangerous subsection of the prison population that will aggressively corrupt and take advantage of such a situation to continue the behaviour that got them in there in the first place.

Which is why we have many different prison types and institutions, and not only can you be sentenced to a specific one, but also moved between them if you qualify to do so. Mixing different groups is something you definitely don't want to do - and the finer grained your partitioning, the better you can treat each group appropriately.

But I agree, there are people whom you just cannot (at least currently) rehabilitate - depending on how dangerous they are considered to be, it's possible to keep them incarcerated almost indefinitely - but that rarely if ever happens.

[–]FreakCERS 0 points1 point ago

I'm actually not sure how it works in USA, but in Denmark at least, many people are put in institutions with better facilities to help them overcome or work with mental problems. These are often more open, and more "friendly" than regular prisons, because (amongst a number of reasons) you don't really want to cause more stress than necessary for people trying to recover from mental issues.

[–]FreakCERS 1 point2 points ago

It's true that there is a much better safety net to catch people before they fall so deeply into despair that crime is their only way out (or even just the most attractive way). But how you treat people in prisons are also a major factor. Here, we strive to socialize people - to make them ready for a normal life on the outside. That's the goal when we put them in jail - for them to get better. There seems to be no such goal in many other prison systems - here you're just 1) punishing them and 2) keeping them off the streets for a set amount of time. You are quite literally putting the criminal on timeout, and doing your very best to make him worse by the time he gets out.

[–]FreakCERS 0 points1 point ago

Oh that's probably completely true, but also (I'd argue) not the same as being better at telling right from wrong.

I wasn't disagreeing with you - just pointing out to other readers that as a society, it's probably not saving any money. And I agree, I doubt many operators of private jails are naive enough to actually believe they are good at deterring crime. But I guess it would make it easier for them to sleep if they convinced themselves that was the case...
