TIL Steve Jobs shut down all philanthropic efforts at Apple when he returned to the company in 1997. by 996hurtin todayilearned

Robert Kearns was the big example there, once he showed off his product all the automakers just started manufacturing and installing them in cars without paying him a dime, when he sued them they argued that the mechanism was an obvious assemblage of existing parts, he won.

Apple takes these features because they are good features, and new and innovative functionality is expected of every new device they put out or there is no incentive to upgrade, same as the car companies.

But the lesson to take from his story is that simple effective ideas are a dime a dozen, and arent worth anything if you cant protect them or bring them to market, this is seen very often in software development, there are tons of tiny apps and even more concepts for apps out there, but they are only ever going to be used if they are part of a larger feature rich package like iOS

why on earth would they give anyone else the credit, that doesnt happen anywhere, everything you touch or use has been invented by someone and you dont know or care who

Did you know that Robert Kearns invented the intermittent windshield wiper module? that Eugene Polley invented the remote control, of course not, they dont stamp inventors names on products, they just go into the product seamlessly and nobody gets the credit.

I have a friend who just puts another O-ring under the spear and friction fits it in, its fairly tight once pressurized, but i'm terrified of a spear-rocket

the secret is to not use the infernal spiral rings but use snap rings and maybe another o-ring underneath the spear head

as far as cleaning, its no harder than cleaning a carboy, only you cant see inside too good, i use half inch plastic balls (slingshot ammo) mixed with some water and detergent to scrub the insides

Again, the abortion issue is not whether it is moral or immoral

The abortion issue is whether you want to use force of law to take away the freedom to make that decision from others, pro-life is not by definition anti-choice

Carrot in one hand stick in the other - thank them for thier time, not interested in what they're selling, any furthur contact will be considered harassment and reported to both local law enforcement and church leaders
Do the missionaries have a list of people who are not to be fucked with?

IGN just gave Diablo 3 a 9.5, do you think this is a fair score? by VodkaMonsterin Diablo

[–]FlyingSkyWizard 3 points4 points ago

What exactly was bad about the presentation, thats an incredibly vague term that can refer to anything from the art style to the outfits or voice acting

Diablo's presentation is dictated by its format, its a video game that needs to present you with tasks to perform that are relevant to the plot followed by cutscenes that advance the plot, its standard issue format for the medium, whats the problem?

Over the top exaggeration makes you sound like a spazzed out teenager

The story is absolutely terrible? -The plotline of a porn movie is absolutely terrible, D3 may not have been the greatest story, but its objectively a good adventure story with protagonist, villain, menace, surprise, betrayal, strife, high stakes, conclusion. all the parts of a good story, might not be your cup of tea, but its objectively a good story, and its a video game, its told in the context of a video game, thats how its done in the medium, you want to watch a movie go play MGS4

Falling apart? in what way? how do you even define that, the game has a highly replayable endgame and metagame that millions are enjoying with no massive structural failures that everyone is aware of.

What's the Bible got to say about interracial marriage? by funkmastaschnobin Christianity

[–]FlyingSkyWizard -1 points0 points ago

the bible is a translation of a translation of a translation of a translation of several writings that are known to not really be written by the people's who's names are on the gospels that was remixed in the middle ages to leave out all the bits they disagreed with, its impossible to know whats god's word and what was added by man (or indeed the devil)

Destroying books is hardly the irreversible wiping out of knowledge and art it used to be, books used to be hard to produce, rare and valuable - in the modern world snookie can have thousands of copies of her inane brain droppings published at the drop of a hat

Give me a reason to buy this game by LtDralligin swtor

[–]FlyingSkyWizard 3 points4 points ago

Its a fantastic single-player experience, the stories of each class are well written and interesting, its worth playing through twice for republic and empire, a worthy successor to Knights of the old Republc

Its a fairly mediocre MMO, but if you find a good guild you can make it work, its definitely worth the box price and a few months subscription for the single player alone

If you play a second class on one side you'll only get half new content as its split between class and planet specific quests

Less Sass, More Class - Guildwars 2 Fashion by gw2wvwin Guildwars2

[–]FlyingSkyWizard 22 points23 points ago

to be fair, GW2 has some pretty ludicrous female lunatic pixie outfits, mesmer outfits in particular, the starting caster outfit for norn/human is this absurd fluffly lace thing with a fluffy garter on one leg, but i played a human elementalist in beta and the human designs definitely got more conservative and i had lots of choice

Dont attempt to spoof your settings to purchase from the US servers, they are being very strict about the region lock, and you wont be able to play on the EU servers
