My Crime? Riding a bicycle on a public street. by rational_alternativein bicycling

[–]Floppyboobsack 15 points16 points ago

Well, I used to have a recumbent trike and I got a hell of a lot more attention on it than I do on my road bike. Avery is kind of a nutbar though and he started a lot of massive drama on another forum. FTR I always had a flag on my trike unless I was just puttering around the neighbourhood.

I can kind of relate. I have a tendency to yell at people who drive carelessly, but it never helps the situation aside from making me feel better.

I was travelling north on a wide shouldered 50kph road and approaching a stop light. In the shoulder was a work vehicle doing something to a lamp post. My b/f and I looked behind and saw a huge budget van a ways back, so we signalled to the left to go out and around the work vehicle.

Apparently the noob Budget van driver was pissed that he had to use his precious braking mechanism to slow down for a second as we past the work truck, so he honked at us. Well being the good hearted easy going person that I am, I screamed obscenities at him and we gave him the finger. Yea I know that was hardly the way to react.

Anyways the funny part occured when he actually pulled over as we rode by, and shouted that we should be "on the bike path". He was referring to the MUP near the road, you know, the kind people use to walk their dogs and push their strollers. It's ok if you are riding slow but certainly not for road bikes who want to get somewhere quick. It's funny because the lane he was parked in is marked with cycling symbols and IS a bike path. The level of ignorance is staggering. Still, fortunately I am in Canada where we don't have many guns so I try to keep my mouth shut more.

He doesn't have to have a flag, is the point he was making, so it really doesn't matter what anyone thinks he should do.

However, I kind of wonder about some of the story as I am familiar with the man who wrote it...he tends to be a bit out there in some of his beliefs.

Consequences of riding with misaligned dropouts. by thetardwranglerin bikewrench

Yea you can probably cold set it back with a big piece of wood as a lever. I have cold set quite a few old Raleigh frames with just 2 people and a piece of thick doweling.

This home made tool might be of some help, it will at least show the discrepancy, then you can bend away at it.

Scroll down to the bottom here for tips on the cold setting and frame alignment.

1997 RSX double/triple-compatible shifter: how to adjust on a double? by wlonklyin bikewrench

[–]Floppyboobsack 0 points1 point ago

I have run into quite a few of these, just block the third click by adjusting the H screw. It shouldn't make any difference as the chainring spacing is the same if the shifter is compatible.

If your casing is from 1997, you might want to change it. The barrel adjusters don't need to be changed unless they are damaged. However, with some proper lubing I have reused 20+ year old casing and cables.

Ok first of all why is it bent like this? Is the dropout filed too much, or streched out, or is the rear triangle bent?

The beauty of steel frames is they can be bent back into shape. If you go to a decent bike shop they should have a frame alignment gauge that can do the job, such as this..

rebuilding an old fuji from the 80's or 70's it has 2 small sharp L shaped things on the lower part of the frame any clue? by parabox1in bicycling

[–]Floppyboobsack 0 points1 point ago

If it were a higher end model, you could have perhaps sold it rusty or not on Craig's list for enough to buy a new single speed. Just an FYI for the future, old bikes are only going up in value, if they are good quality. You basically just completely took away the value of the bike.

Of course the bike could be a piece of crap, got any pics of it before you altered it? If it's some hi ten steel low end bike with suicide levers then I would not worry about it.

What you are talking about is a recumbent /HPV fairing, and the land speed record is held by a bike with this fairing. The current record holder is Sam Whittingham.

A recumbent with a fairing is usually called a velomobile and you can buy them commercially.

Exactly. Reminds me of this horror....

Starting with a 56cm Kuwahara, Caravan, frame stripping off the paint, removing all unnecessary metal bits; Derailleur hanger, rear break mounts, numerous cable housing brackets, ext.

I could not believe that.. .the Kuwahara Caravan is an awesome vintage touring bike.. you don't come across those too often!

Please, if you are rebuilding a bike and want to turn it into some colourful clown bike at least make sure you are picking a piece of crap. The thing that is great about vintage bikes are those little additions like pump pegs.

How can anyone call it "restoring" if you cut off all the original parts??

Pretty neat, how many frames did it take?

Also, thanks, I was half asleep installing brake pads on one of my bikes last night and your pic made me realise I installed them upside down.

Why is this so hard? All I want is a waterproof, breathable, light-weight, vented summer rain jacket for under $100 by Floppyboobsackin bicycling

Yea I love MEC, I get their stuff overnight since I am in BC + free shipping. In general, some items in Canada are way more expensive than if I purchase them online. Tents and cycling jackets seem to be among them.

Damn, thanks for the link. I found it even cheaper at Bicyclinghub.com. How do you think it will be for summer temps?

There is a Canadian flag next to my name, lol. I looked at all the MEC stuff but it seems over priced in the WP jacket dept. compared to other online shops.

That's kind of the conclusion I have come up with as well. I don't know if Gore-tex would really be worth it for me since I sweat a ton anyways and there is no way it would keep up. I think I will stick to finding something waterproof coated and lots of vents.

No. This design works fine. One guy rode a Cruzbike around the world. They sponsor a woman who is breaking records on their high end version.

hmm yea I saw that on there a few times but I didn't think of a softshell as really waterproof for long periods of time. I am not sure if the DWR coating on the soft material is the same as a more plastic-like jacket.

[–]Floppyboobsack[S] 0 points1 point ago

I did a bit more reading and I see why now. Basically I need a membrane jacket like Gore-tex to be truly breathable as opposed to DWR.

So really, any DWR jacket is the same as another aside from the other features it may have, such as venting.

No, the way you worded it, you recently saw the movie and still didn't know this fact. I didn't mean the education system failed you, I was being facetious.

You missed my point. You are basically insinuating that because of your age you are not taught about presidential history in your school. That is kind of a well known and obvious fact about Reagan imo.
