Talk to the IATSE Local in your area. They can explain how to join the Union and the in's-and-out's of touring.

Designers do not tour. Electricians tour.

If you want to be a Lighting Designer, the quickest way to do that is to get work as a Assistant Lighting Designer (ALD). Most lighting designers look for an ALD with an MFA degree and solid VectorWorks Spotlight and Lightwright skills. After a few years of assisting, producers will get to know you and may hire you as an LD once they get a feel for your work.

If you want to tour, go the IATSE route. Non-union tours can be miserable. I speak from experience.

Cutting down a tree? by simuovein techtheatre

[–]FatherYang 0 points1 point ago

We have used actual tree branches for shows but not a full, actual tree. Actual trees, unless you want a "Charlie Brown" Christmas Tree, tend to be too heavy or the wrong shape. That having said, contact an arborist in your area. They may be able to provide you with what you need.

Preparing a portfolio for college and beyond? by yoohoopantsin techtheatre

Don't discount schools with BA degrees in Theatre. I am a Technical Director at a LORT B+ & D regional theatre company. I found a more general degree invaluable at the Undergraduate level.
