TROPHY CASE

  • Three-Year Club

I'm 20 and I want to start an IRA. I have no idea what I am doing. Help. by purpleyarnin personalfinance

[–]Enphuego 0 points1 point ago

Don't over complicate this. Go to the Vanguard website, open a Roth IRA and set the initial deposit of $1000 for the target fund that corresponds with your retirement. You'll be done in 30 minutes, I just did it right now because I've been putting it off.

After you've taken some action, get at least one of the recommended books from the FAQ from your library and read it. Over your lifetime, the knowledge you learn now about investing will pay off greatly.

Researchers have engineered a device that delivers a tiny, high-pressure jet of medicine through the skin without the use of a hypodermic needle. The device can be programmed to deliver a range of doses to various depths — an improvement over similar systems commercially available. by nomdewebin science

[–]Enphuego 0 points1 point ago

It's not really the pain I hate with injections, there honestly isn't too much pain associated with the needle itself. It's the waiting, the seeing the needle, the dread and the trying to stay calm through all the prep while you can smell the alcohol used to sanitize it.

With the gun it's all over in like 10 seconds. I vastly prefer the gun.

Handle all your correspondence in writing, not on the phone. You get additional legal protections if it's in writing and you'll have a good record of exactly what they told you.

Because they look better without file extensions. by pcman2000in talesfromtechsupport

You imagine the typical Windows Server admin as tech savvy people with years of experience. The reality is that many simply end up being whoever seemed pretty good with computers and was able to install an OS and a program. I've had to walk "admins" through simple things like setting an IP or burning an ISO to a DVD.

I'm not saying all Windows admins are bad or anything, it's just that there's a vast variety of skill levels out there managing Windows Server. I imagine that's why they left the default the same as the desktop line.

A five minute conversation with the average Windows Server administrator is all the justification you'll need.

A wardrobe for my less-than-flattering body... any advice? by -throwawaybear-in femalefashionadvice

[–]Enphuego 1 point2 points ago

As a guy, I think your body shape is pretty hot, especially when you wear snug fitting clothing like the first pic. Why on earth are you hiding it? There are a ton of girls that would die for the hip to waist ratio you've got and a ton of guys that love it. You don't need to have a cookie cutter body shape to be attractive.

It seems like you try so hard to hide your "defects" that you can't show off whatever you'd like people to pay attention to. Perhaps if you thought of your hips as a good thing, you'd have an easier time pulling off the styles you want.

Quilt questions, noise and drafts by skyl4rkin myog

[–]Enphuego 0 points1 point ago

I realize this is a bit old by now, but if you look at the Ray Jardine quilt designs, they've solved the draft problem. As for your beard, perhaps it would be easier to just wear something over your face rather than sew it on the bag. A thin fabric pullover could keep your face warm and stop the noise.

Why is renting in LA so unbelievably tough right now? by wealltogetherin LosAngeles

[–]Enphuego 2 points3 points ago

That's pretty much gang central for Highland Park. Check the blocks north of York, up to Meridian. I always see signs advertising that they are for rent up there. It's not a perfect neighborhood, but it's much much better than where you are living now. If you get over towards Ave 50 and York its more of a college/hipster vibe.

Why is renting in LA so unbelievably tough right now? by wealltogetherin LosAngeles

[–]Enphuego 5 points6 points ago

I'd just drive around and look for "For Rent" signs on apartment complexes that look nice. It seems like a lot of the apartment rentals don't really advertise much.

What part of Highland Park are you in? My neighborhood is pretty nice. I kinda doubt that gang violence is on the rise, if you are down in the Avenues, it's always been like that.

Is Google Chrome any better than Firefox? by brodie268in AskReddit

[–]Enphuego 11 points12 points ago

Let's start out with a simple observation. If you aren't paying for a product from a for-profit company, then you aren't the consumer, you are the product. Your personal info is being used to target ads which drive real sales that pull dollars from your wallet. There's nothing wrong with this, but let's not pretend that these services are free.

If all the information about you is truly public then you haven't much to fear. Most of us have information that, while not secret, is sensitive. For example you might not want your future wife to know you are into tranny porn or you might not want the MPAA to know you download movies from usenet and you might not want a theoretical future government to have a list of all the books you've read. You see Google as a benign third party to this info, and for the most part you are probably right. I'm more worried about the other parties that would love to have that information. Once Google (or Facebook) accumulates a vast, referenced, searchable store of user information it becomes a convenient target for all sorts of groups. The MPAA might be able to compel Google to cough up information about usenet users via lawsuits, the government might compel them to reveal information about "terrorist" groups, or third parties might conveniently craft their targeted ads with the goal of revealing the identity of people that preferred to remain semi-anonymous. A future, more profit minded Google might sell your insurance companies a list of people that looked for certain symptoms associated with cancer so that they can dump your policy before you get diagnosed.

What I dislike about data collection is that you can't pull the data back. If Good Google decides to become Evil Google, it's not like you have any ownership over the already collected data. If your current government becomes an evil government, you won't be able to remove your search history for accessories for your AR-15 and they'll show up at your door asking you to turn it over.

Why there are so few women engineer [SMBC] by droidLin geek

[–]Enphuego 3 points4 points ago

I don't know how you grew up, but there wasn't an infinite supply of toys in my childhood. That shit costs money and most families don't have a ton of it lying around to buy a million toys your kids are going to play with for a week. The reality for most families is that you need to narrow it down a bit.

with an enormous emphasis on my thighs and calves (seriously, they're almost unnaturally big). I'm "skinny-fat" and have a small chest size (34A), so my body looks really disproportionate and imbalanced.

Am I looking at the wrong album or something? You've got a nice waist and some great hips, you should just rock it.

paying large fines with all pennies is disorderly conduct

Pretty sure that guy threw the pennies all over the office or something to get his disorderly conduct charge. Had he walked in and calmly paid in pennies, he would have been fine.

How do I need to have a year's worth of salary saved by the time I am 30? by tanpopoin personalfinance

[–]Enphuego 3 points4 points ago

Your plan makes a lot of sense.

As for your savings rate, I'd take a look at this graph and make sure that your savings rate matches up with your expectations for your retirement age and investment return. You really have to be saving 10% or so at a bare minimum, higher percentages will get you there sooner and with less reliance on investment returns.

Google Products by bobsmith1234in netsec

[–]Enphuego 0 points1 point ago

I'd worry about Google products unintentionally "leaking" useful information to third parties. Google knows a lot about it's users and then uses that information to customize it's users results. It wouldn't be impossible to analyze the custom results and ads served to generate information about the targeted person with enough certainty to draw useful, although not foolproof conclusions. When you start connecting the dots between people and profiles and applying statistical analysis to the data you can retrieve, you can learn a lot about a person given seemingly mundane details. Look at research that's been done where you can identify a person's sexual orientation by their facebook profile or how Target can figure out when a woman is pregnant. These examples are just the tip of the iceberg to how data analysis is going to be used in the future.

An example would be a snooping employer monitoring what ads are sent to you from AdSense. It wouldn't be difficult to identify employees that have expensive diseases and then fire them. If Google knows you have cancer from reading your email and then starts serving you ads about it, now your employer knows too and can start looking to fire you. A truly malicious snooper could probably use your session cookie to perform a bunch of auto complete searches in order to gain more information about you.

BHHS: Can't go under it? Can't go around it? by bscourierin LosAngeles

[–]Enphuego 2 points3 points ago

I'd think it boils down to A) not wanting to give poor people access to their neighborhood and B) not giving a shit about anyone that rides the Metro. All the flak about BHHS and all that nonsense is just a convenient front for the NIMBYs.

I doubt they'll be able to hold up construction for long. LA is hell-bent on building subways and the opposition is pretty transparent and localized.

Great, I make an offhand comment about the pointlessness of blending in if you are gay, and now you paint it like I'm some sort of narrow minded bigot. All I'm saying is that if you blend in too well, no one is going to know you are gay, not delivering some sort of social commentary on what "normal" is and why we should all strive for it. Hell, the last word anyone would use to describe my life is normal.
