in this particular situation

If you were put in charge of trimming Earth's human population down to 3 billion or so, what would your criteria be for who stays and who goes? by Clayburnin AskReddit

[–]Enginerdiest 0 points1 point ago

I think you overestimate how many 3bn is or underestimate the size of the earth. There is ample room around the world to bury, cremate, or some combination thereof. If you buried them all, the minimum packing density is 51 people per sq. mi. Which I'm sure can be increased. Combined with cremation, it could work. Or we chuck em into space which is my favorite solution because it would confuse the hell out of aliens or future humans. "life on Mars! Skeletal remains discovered!" lol nope, that's just where we dump the bodies.

The idea that intelligence has helped us is a fallacy.

[citation needed]

Intelligence is a multiplier. It has allowed us to do more of the things we already did. More bad, and more good.

1) anyone who wants to go, first.

Then by lottery. Why? Because any quality in the population is some random distribution, that has been balanced by years and years of natural selection and social force. The only way to minimize unbalance would be to select by an equally random distribution because the merging of two random processes (birth and death) is itself a random process. That would prevent unbalance in the 3bn left, and the numbers are high enough that it should converge on being truly random.

Then I'd kill myself, not out of spite, but out of pittance for all those who've died. Volunteering to be among those chosen by my system so as to avoid the appearance of being above my own process or ideal.

TIL Steve Jobs shut down all philanthropic efforts at Apple when he returned to the company in 1997. by 996hurtin todayilearned

[–]Enginerdiest 1 point2 points ago

I'm saying pragmatically that responsibility falls on citizens, and a company, as an entity, shouldn't get involved.

Considering Bill Gates has donated his own money, I have no problem with it.

[–]Enginerdiest 3 points4 points ago

It's short-sighted to deny that Jobs had an acknowledgeable role in product development. He wasn't an engineer, but "surrounding [yourself] with people who create revolutionary products" isn't as trivial as you make it sound.

Management is hugely important, and not just for the company but for the sake of product design. Engineers tend to sneer at that, but it's true. Being able to coordinate a group of talent is just as if not more important than the talent itself, and Jobs was good at that.

I don't think companies should donate money to philanthropy. It gets too easy to become entangled up in moral debates and politics. Companies make products and maximize profits.

Now if the employees want to donate, kudos. But donation on behalf of the company? I disagree.

I understand that their practices may be illegal in the letter of the law, but I disagree with such a black and white assessment. Your age, appearance, and gender are all qualifying factors when your job is essentially sales and advertisement. It doesn't seem right to come down on a place for choosing applicants that will get them the best returns, and I'd be skeptical that a man can fill the role as well as a female in this particular situation. The fact is, there are lots of jobs that "discriminate" in the sense that appearance, age and gender are all relevant factors. Cheerleading, modeling, stripping, alcohol promoters—all women by my count. Maybe they find some loophole to justify it, but doesn't make the truth any less true. Discrimination isn't a simple black and white issue and in this case it's a waste of time.

Helmets, opinions, do you guys where them? by footballsteve13in skiing

[–]Enginerdiest 0 points1 point ago

Helmets aren't designed to reduce neck injuries. The argument is usually that helmets may reduce head injury, but they increase neck injury. The latter isn't true.

You know how you're attributing the work of employees to Pixar because that's who they work for?

Same thing.

Theres a white paper on network queuing and system optimization that was based off this. I'll see if I can find it.

When the valedictorian at my little brothers grad ended the speech with "YOLO". by Verdaugain funny

[–]Enginerdiest 3 points4 points ago

This is getting out of hand.

No, not YOLO, the pretentious snobbery of reddit toward anything popular outside of the hivemind. People say YOLO. It's a trend. Get the fuck over it. Same with "Call Me Maybe", whatever reddit thinks a hipster is today, and the ever-changing English language ("literally" literally means "not literally").

Enjoy the things you like but come off the holier-than-thou condescension towards things you don't. It's childish and off-putting.

What "amazing fact" or colloquialism do you know is actually wrong, and you're sick of correcting people about it? by TestZeroin AskReddit

[–]Enginerdiest 0 points1 point ago

True, but income is better thought of as net income and not strictly revenue. In that case, the income to expense ratio, normalized against hours worked, brings doctors wages down. Still a high paying job, but the psychological impact of "4 times the median wage" is inflated.

I always defended its use as hyperbole an recently (AFAIK) it's made it's way into an official definition

Your personal distance varies by more than that in a given day. It's a truly short-sighted thing to say.

Is Boston a good place to move to by Guanrenin boston

[–]Enginerdiest 2 points3 points ago

Startups are like bands for nerds. People do them for fun, for careers, to make money, and a whole host of other reasons. Startups are prominent right now because of the economic withdrawal. Faced with dwindling employment, tighter benefits, and lower wages, more people would rather work for themselves. And it's great because startups move fresh money around and innovate in ways large companies simply can't. Those that are successful make jobs and foster economic growth.

Of course, I had a bias because—surprise!— I am a cofounder in a startup. BTW Boston hosts the largest startup accelerator in the world, MassChallenge. If you're into that kind of stuff, you should check it out.
