Does anyone else hate motorcycles? by byrdmcflyin AskReddit

[–]Dweller 0 points1 point ago

Not in my experience, no. I know one true "biker" who rides harleys, hangs with 1%ers, the whole bit. His daughter rides a Japanese cruiser. I ride a Japanese Dual sport (basically a street legal dirt bike) and we have ridden together before and will again. He will always own an American bike. I respect that decision, but chose to go a different direction.

My immediate rider friends have a mix of dirt, dual sport, cruisers and crotch rockets, and we ride together all the time too. We have had the exclusion discussion before and the consensus I have always received is it is not what you ride, its that you ride at all. Well that and the idiots. You will find the idiots on every kind of bike, and riders hate them as much as those that don't ride.

I just hate the culture.

You have described one small subset of a very large population. What you hate is "biker" culture. Leather, chrome, harleys, loud pipes.

What about the people who commute on their Rebel 250 or the Adventure rider who lays down 1000 miles in a weekend riding the backroads of America or the guy who takes his bike to the track on weekends or the guy who owns a harley with quiet pipes and rides country roads on a sunny afternoon?

There are as many types of rider as there is type of bike. You are welcome to hate them all, but you need to look around a little bit and see there is a LOT more to riding than a leather vest and a mullet.

People went through high school and college without internet for a great many years. Internet access is not a requirement for education, but it does make some things easier.

Saying goodbye today...... by Dwellerin dogs

[–]Dweller[S] 110 points111 points ago

I am still trying to come to terms with this, but it is time.

I brought Yukon home on Easter weekend about 10 years ago. He was a rescue from a friends neighbor who left him chained up and alone in the backyard every day. He would see people once a day when he was fed and was otherwise neglected. When I arrived to pick him up, they were not even home. They left his dish, a leash and a bag of food. That was all the goodbye he got from his previous family.

So, I brought him home and spoiled the crap out of him. Over time he developed a degenerative neurological disorder and slowly lost control/use of his back legs. Today he had trouble getting out of bed, and then got stuck twice more while trying to go out to eat. It's time. fuck... its time.

He is my buddy, my friend, my companion and will be missed dearly. it has taken a few attempts to complete this, so I am going to sign off and make a call.

Give your friends and extra love for me today guys. Cherish every day together, like I did. So long Yukon. Daddy loves you, pupperdoo.

EDIT: I would like to take a moment to thank each of you for your kind words. I saw many inspiring messages in this thread and intend to respond to them, when the time is right. Yukon left at 5:15 last night. He was surrounded by those he loved and those that loved him right until the end.

I am blessed in that I have been able to work from home the last few years and was able to spend every day with him by my side. Sometimes nudging my hand for a love, sometimes just sleeping at my feet, but always there. Today my home and my heart both have empty spaces, but I will always have memories of my boy.

Thank you all.

Is that a perspective issue, or is your bike really that much smaller?

Good point about using a worm. The consensus seems to be that hiding the hook is not an issue, but you make a great point about having a worm stripped from your hook.

don't tell the chatter mouths that one.

That thought had occurred to me too.

My son at 7 found my DM's guide. He asked me if I would teach him how to play. I handed him my old red books and told him to start with the player's guide. Half an hour later he yelled, "do we have any twenty sided dice?" I may be doing something right. by Justusbrazin daddit

[–]Dweller 0 points1 point ago

I live for the day when my son asks me that question, but I am afraid it won't be coming. He told me recently he does not like fantasy genre stuff and would rather play things like Call of Duty.

You need to bring him to a game store and get him his own set and dice bag.

Today, I taught a mother how to block internet porn on her son's laptops, when has work ever made you ruin someone's life? by PrideDemonin AskReddit

[–]Dweller 1 point2 points ago

As an IT consultant I was paid to collect information about porn surfing habits of an employee. I was paid to scour the dudes hard drive for porn, catalog it and present it to the director.

I was also paid to collect evidence against a couple who were managing a group care home. they lost their jobs and were sued based on information I was paid to collect.

Question about Minecraft by stryder66in xbox360

[–]Dweller 2 points3 points ago

Could you create a new game, mark it as private and online, and leave the host logged in all the time? I would guess that you would then be able to jump in and out as time allows. I have not tried it, but have a similar situation.

Bait. I was taught to hide the hook. I fish a lot of trout and am starting to think this is not necessary. In fact I think it may have cost me some hookups over the years.

Noise. NO NOISE EVER is what I Was told. I have not seen this to be an issue when bank fishing, but can see how sound would travel quite a lot in a boat.

Setting the hook. I have better luck letting them run a bit, but this leads to gut hooks a lot and I prefer to catch and release. Perhaps see the point on Bait to see what is causing me the missed strikes? Not sure yet.

Scent. I have not paid a lot of attention to it. Possibly causing me lost hits?

Line. Lighter is better, and Flourocarbon is practtically invisible, but also touchy about knots used and is expensive. I have had much better casting performance with light lines, and have gone to a 4 lbs. braid that is the size of a one pound on my ultralight trout rod.

What's the worst thing you ever stepped on barefoot? by corinroyalin AskReddit

[–]Dweller 0 points1 point ago

A toothpick. Someone left it on the carpet and as I walked by my foot snagged it, sending it upright just as I put my weight down. Drove it in about 1/4" and then broke off at the surface. About 6 hobbling weeks later it worked its way out. I have never in my life known relief like getting that son of a bitch out of my foot.

Trout keep stealing my powerbait. Any way to keep it on the hook/keep them from nibbling it off? by BurgerGreasein Fishing

[–]Dweller 0 points1 point ago

Try power eggs or egg clusters. They are more like a rubber, with all the powerbait color and smell.

An alternative is to use a Cheese hook (is that the name?) a treble hook with a wire spiraled around it to give the bait something to hang on to. I am not a fan of trebles because they can hook the gills easier, and I tend to catch and release more often than I harvest.

Would reading a book like Proficient Motorcycling do me any good before I can actually ride? by herewego111in motorcycles

[–]Dweller 1 point2 points ago

I think it would be a great idea to read before you ride, and then revisit in a year so you can apply practical knowledge and experience to what you are reading.

My family immigrated from Sweden through Chicago to the Nehalem valley in the late 1800s, eventually moving to Mutnomah. I was born in Tigard and have been in the general area ever since.

Is there a trick on boosting your dsl internet speed by wrapping cat5 cables on each end of the cable from modem to the router? by IronUniversein AskReddit

[–]Dweller 1 point2 points ago

Once upon a time, I was a L3 support tech for DSL. Call the phone company and complain about static on the line. This will usually get them to roll a truck out to check for line quality. Complaining about speed will yield nothing, but a complaint about voice quality is usually treated much more seriously.

Sometimes switching to a different line at the box on the street will give you a cleaner/faster connection.
