TROPHY CASE

Sometimes it's just about patience. I've waited over a year for these. by music2booksin gardening

Definitely worth it...and you will be thinning them out the next year, which is also difficult but necessary.

We planted 25 bare root plants last spring, plucked the flowers and now have over 100 plants, which we will be thinning back to 75 or so after the harvest.

Sometimes? Haha...I waited 7 years for my first substantial blueberry harvest, thanks to the thieving ways of birds, and the damage deer can do over the winter.

Also, my first strawberries are coming in, also planted last year, so congrats, I'll be enjoying some with you.

There are a lot of very good rib roast rubs out there.

I prefer one's that contain sage.

I'll drink to that...I landed a job 3 weeks ago, and we were 2 months behind on our mortgage.

And now we are going to make it...by the hair on our teeth.

Congrats, bud, I know exactly how you feel.

Thanks to stalk_of_fennel, I am thinking it is fireblight, and the disease most likely was already in the tree when it was shipped to me this spring.

Yeah, I just took more pictures and emailed them about it.

I bought 4 total apple trees from them, 2 cortland and 2 macs. Only this one cortland is having a problem.

We had a wet spell, but it has been dry since, and none of the other trees are affected. Very warm, though, and wet enough I suppose.

This is probably the problem...thank you.

This is in Northern Illinois. For the possibility that this pest may have been a stowaway: I ordered them from a nursery in Eastern Missouri. The trees were dormant planted in early April, and were greening up nicely. I am not having any problems (yet...) with the other 3 apple trees I planted at the same time. This is one of two Cortland apples, and I also have 2 Macintosh.

It happened in a single day. The previous day, this tree seemed to be growing quite well. Then I walked out and found the leaves had been damaged, and noticed these 2 flies.

The larger one was hanging out on the main trunk, while the smaller one was positioned on a leaf as seen in this photo.

The tree is now dead.

Edit: In case the fly can be hard to spot in the top picture...it is in the dead center of the photo.

I broke in to Dick Portillo's condo once.

But only because he asked me too.

This was in 1989, and I and working as a security guard in the condo complex he lived in in Oak Brook. I was doing my nightly rounds, and I found him in the parking garage, and he asked if I knew where to find a ladder.

He had locked his keys in his condo, and couldn't get back in.

I knew where a ladder was stashed by the maintenance guys, and carried it to just below his 2nd floor balcony window. He offered me a $100 to climb it, go into his home, and buzz him in to the building.

The guy had some nice shit back then, I can only imagine how well he is doing these days.

I got the hundred bucks, and a couple days later, when he passed the entry gate, he stopped and gave me a large stack of free food coupons for Portillo's.

I ate like a king for a couple of months.

Dear redditors, what's the most common error that foreigners do cooking your country dishes? by MrGestorein Cooking

[–]Drumlin 0 points1 point ago

Exactly.

Dry rubbed spare ribs, apple wood smoked for 6 hours at 210 degrees.

I also very much like hickory.

As that they tend to get very dry in a side box style smoker, I mop them down every 45 minutes or so with a beer based mop.

I was expecting a picture of a guy with 10lbs of ribs in one hand, a full pork belly in the other, and a stack of briskets at his feet.

...and a giant smile on his face.

You shouldn't need to stake your trees, depending on their size. If they are small, first year trees, I would not stake them at all. The wind should not be a problem if properly planted, and their root system will be well enough established before the limbs/leaves are large enough to make the wind an issue.

As for fencing...I would highly recommend it. I do it just for the deer...no feral hogs around here.

And for watering...I connected the fencing to both posts...one end of it connected to the first post, wrapped it around, and connected the middle to the other post. But I left the other end of the fence unsecured, where it meets the first end of the fence. This is good enough to keep out the deer and hogs, and allows easy access to the tree...at most, I used a small bit of wire to keep it tightly closed, one that is easily taken on and off.

What are you paranoid about? I cover the built in cam on my laptop with tape because i think someone will hack it and spy on me. by crash-from-spacein AskReddit

[–]Drumlin 3 points4 points ago

Holy fuck. Where is my tape?

Or are you just trying to spread OP's paranoia?

Doesn't matter...taping the cam.

Edit: I used black electrical tape, because I am a little bit paranoid that people with think I am paranoid.
