Anger over plans to restart Japan's nuclear plants by DrZoidberg_Homeownerin worldnews

[–]DrZoidberg_Homeowner[S] -1 points0 points ago

No deaths - yet. Definitely a jump in radiation related fatal cancers, birth defects, and other serious health issues in the next few decades.

20 protesters inside the government building/meeting room, many more outside on the street.

There are protests because the government is rushing restarts of reactors without taking time to properly assess safety and update emergency procedures, and is doing so behind closed doors allowing the nuclear industry, but not the public, input into what represents a serious risk to all Japanese people.

If the Japanese government was conducting this transparently, and in a way that prioritised safety rather than industry interests then there wouldn't be much public outcry.

Whaling may be sunk by commercial reality by DrZoidberg_Homeownerin environment

I don't think anyone is ignoring it... the article covers this point.

Propaganda is mostly from the pro-whaling side i'm afraid. Environmental groups - while sometimes over emphatic and other times not entirely truthful - are more trustworthy than the vested interests arguing for commercial whaling.

Article says he was exposed to 52 microSieverts (μSv) not milliSieverts (mSv) - but yes, that level won't make anyone sick or cause death. More likely heavy strain of working knocking an older guy around.

I didn't say Paul wasn't a liar, but it would be nice if people read things before commenting.

Why do people comment without bothering to read the article?

Japan Whaling Fleet Accused of Using Tsunami Disaster Funds - They've left port under heavy guard & clashes are expected with Sea Shepherd conservation activists - According to campaigners, Japan used 2.28 billion yen (£19m/US$30m) from the earthquake recovery fund to pay for this year's hunt by anutensilin worldnews

[–]DrZoidberg_Homeowner 2 points3 points ago

Kyodo Senpaku, the company running the fleet, is around 24 million in debt because whaling is unprofitable, and the hunt is far too large for the market to sustain. The ships hired for "extra security" for this year's hunt are owned and operated by Kyodo Senpaku, enabling it to pay off its debts from the extra taxpayer money that has been allocated from the national budget this year.

That's the whole point - it's not "Japan" handing out donation money. It's NGOs. The Japanese government is (very slowly) handing out aid money from the extra budget to those who have put applications in. NGOs are using donation money to provide appropriate support where they can. It's a complimentary system - like most places in the world - and they don't cross over.

Do you have examples of these cases?

The government is being extremely slow in handing out relief to everyone, but it is not factoring NGO support for communities into its handouts. If you have proof otherwise, please post it.

That's all well and good, but the point is fin whales and humpbacks remain endangered and threatened respectively, and should not be targeted at all - at least until they are removed from risky categories. While I don't agree with the hunting of whales in general, i'm not all that worried about minkes as they number between 350k and 700k, so I think we agree on the responsible hunting front.

How am I exaggerating? Humbacks are threatened... fin whales are highly endangered. It's well known. if you don't really disagree, then why are you defending the hunt of endangered species? The hunt numbers are extra pressure on top of an already struggling population that is affected by ship strikes, climate change, rising acidity and a number of other factors. Hunting "just 10 out of thousands" is no excuse. It's not needed, and it shouldn't be done.

That's not really true. The government doesn't factory in NGO donations in its relief funds, and therefore does not make decisions based upon how much donation money is coming in. Donation money is "extra" money for victims, but in this case, even the massive new budget from the government will not be enough to cover all the associated costs, so it's not "saving" anything from donations coming in.

Donations help the people, not the government.

Hunting a highly endangered species that is extremely slow to reproduce doesn't have to be kill 'em all. They are reducing an already fragile population - this is harmful.

Do you have a link for that figure?

They can make a tonne of money off each whale, especially considering the fleet routinely removes only the most prized and expensive cuts of meat and dumps the rest. But they do have to sell it still... and they have struggled to sell even a fraction of what they catch for the last decade or more.
